Run Percy from the visual-testing workflow your application already uses, and let GitLab CI execute that workflow on each pipeline. Percy says it supports CI/CD integrations, and its changelog announced support for GitLab.com and GitLab CI on September 12, 2018. That historical announcement confirms the integration existed; it does not establish today’s framework-specific commands or a copy-ready pipeline configuration.

What Percy and GitLab CI each do

GitLab CI runs jobs defined for your repository’s pipeline. Percy adds visual snapshot and review capability to a test workflow, integrating with existing development and CI suites. Percy also describes support for more complex suites spread across processes or machines. Percy’s integrations page describes those capabilities; its September 12, 2018 GitLab announcement records support for GitLab.com and GitLab CI.

For an Indian web team, the practical workflow is the same: connect the relevant Percy project, add Percy to the framework workflow, run that workflow in a GitLab job, and review the resulting visual changes. The sources available here do not establish India-specific setup, hosting, availability, or billing terms.

Set up the Percy workflow in GitLab CI

Percy setup depends on the application’s test framework and its current SDK instructions. Because the current official framework commands and GitLab YAML details are not established here, treat the steps below as a configuration checklist—not as a verified, copy-and-run recipe.

  1. Choose the existing visual test workflow. Identify the framework and test command already used by the application. Check Percy’s current instructions for that framework and confirm that an official Percy integration is available.
  2. Create or select the Percy project. Follow the project’s current connection instructions so snapshots from the test workflow are associated with the intended project.
  3. Configure the credential securely. Store the Percy credential as a GitLab CI/CD variable, following the current Percy and GitLab documentation for its exact variable name and masking or protection settings. Do not commit a secret to the repository. The precise variable name and protection behavior are not established by the cited Percy pages, so verify both before configuring the job.
  4. Make the application reachable during the job. Ensure the pipeline starts the application or otherwise makes it available at the URL the visual tests expect. Confirm the test job can reach that URL before relying on snapshots.
  5. Run the framework workflow in a GitLab job. Add the current framework-specific Percy invocation to the relevant job in .gitlab-ci.yml. Keep it consistent with how the team installs dependencies and runs tests locally; consult current framework and Percy documentation for exact syntax.
  6. Review the pipeline output and Percy results. Run a pipeline, confirm the job completes its visual test workflow, then inspect the snapshots in Percy. Review changes with the team and approve only intentional visual updates.

Choose an integration that fits the application

There is no evidence here that one test framework is best for Indian teams. If the repository uses more than one framework or test suite, compare the choices against the application’s needs:

  • Whether Percy documents an integration for the framework and its current version.
  • Whether the existing test command can run reliably in a GitLab job.
  • How the application will be started and made reachable during that job.
  • Whether the visual tests cover the pages and states the team needs reviewed.

Troubleshooting the integration

Use these checks to isolate common setup failures without assuming a particular framework’s command or Percy variable name.

  • The job cannot authenticate: Check the current Percy project instructions for the required credential name and confirm the GitLab variable is available to this job. Review masking and protection settings against the branch or pipeline context; do not print the secret into logs.
  • The test cannot load the application: Confirm the pipeline starts the app and that the configured test URL is reachable from the job. A service running only on a developer’s machine will not automatically be available to a CI job.
  • The pipeline runs tests but Percy has no expected snapshots: Verify that the framework workflow actually invokes Percy’s integration, that the job uses the intended Percy project, and that the test reaches the snapshot steps. Check the current framework-specific Percy instructions for the expected invocation.
  • The configuration does not match an online example: Percy’s GitLab announcement dates to 2018. Use it as confirmation of historical support, not as proof that an older YAML example, CLI command, or SDK instruction remains current.

For one-off or automated captures that do not need Percy’s framework-based visual review workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its documented formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo says it accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
