An Idle AWS Elemental MediaLive channel is not running; it is not, by itself, proof of an error. In the AWS console, open Channels, select the intended channel, and choose Start. Confirm the input is ready first, then wait for the state to move from Starting to Running. YouTube preview and publishing are separate checks: for a scheduled stream, select Go live in YouTube Live Control Room after the preview appears.
Before you start the MediaLive channel
Check that you have the intended channel and YouTube event. Starting the AWS channel does not necessarily publish a scheduled YouTube event. The channel must receive the intended source and send its output to the matching YouTube destination.
- Check the channel: In AWS Elemental MediaLive, open Channels, select the channel, and inspect its state, details, input attachment, schedule, and output destination.
- Check the input: If the channel uses a push input, the upstream source must be pushing to MediaLive before you start the channel. If there are multiple inputs, check the schedule and input selection to confirm which source will be used.
- Check the YouTube event: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select or create the intended stream. Have its current stream URL and stream key available for comparison with MediaLive’s output settings.
A MediaLive RTMP push input and a MediaLive RTMP output are different connections. The input is where an upstream source sends video into MediaLive; the output is where MediaLive sends the encoded stream, such as to YouTube. For an RTMP push input, AWS says the source attempts delivery to the MediaLive input endpoint and MediaLive responds to the handshake when the channel starts; while the channel is not running, the source pauses. Start the channel and verify the YouTube stream
- Start the source first, if it is a push input. Confirm the upstream encoder is sending to the MediaLive input endpoint, and check the channel schedule if it has more than one input.
- Check YouTube’s destination values. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for this event. Do not use an assumed fixed URL or a key from a different event.
- Verify MediaLive’s output destination. In the channel’s output configuration, compare the protocol and URL with YouTube’s displayed values. MediaLive has separate fields for the destination URL and stream name/key. Use RTMPS when it is configured and supported, following the exact endpoint YouTube provides.
- Start MediaLive. In the MediaLive console, open Channels, select the intended channel, and choose Start. AWS states that a channel must be started manually; Idle does not automatically transition to Running simply because a source or YouTube event is ready.
- Wait for the state transition. Watch the channel move through Starting toward Running. AWS says most AWS Cloud channels start in three minutes or less, although up to ten minutes can still be normal. Startup time can vary with factors including configuration complexity and EC2 instance size.
- Confirm the incoming video. Return to YouTube Live Control Room and check that the stream preview or incoming video appears. For a scheduled YouTube stream, select Go live there after preview is available. Follow the status shown for the particular event.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube
Use the requirements and recommendations shown for the intended YouTube stream and match them to the source. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP when supported. It also specifies H.264, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with input codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the applicable values.

MediaLive’s RTMP output configuration separates the destination URL from the stream name. It also provides username and a Parameter Store password reference for destinations that require authentication. Troubleshoot by the symptom
The channel remains Idle
Idle means the channel is not running. Confirm that you selected the correct channel and chose Start. If the state remains Idle, inspect the channel details, alerts, and state history available for that channel. The state alone does not identify whether the issue is a missing start action, authorization, configuration, or another cause.

The channel stays Starting
Allow for the normal startup window: most AWS Cloud channels start within three minutes, and AWS says up to ten minutes can still be normal. If it continues beyond that, check the channel’s details, alerts, and logs rather than assuming a cause from the state label alone.
The channel is Running, but the intended content is missing
A Running state does not prove that the intended video is reaching the encoder. Confirm that a push source is sending and that the channel schedule or input selection points to the desired source.

YouTube has no preview or incoming video
Compare YouTube’s currently displayed stream URL and key with MediaLive’s output protocol, destination URL, and stream name/key. Check whether the destination is configured for RTMP or RTMPS as expected. If the stream key may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; then update MediaLive’s destination with the replacement key. Treat the stream key as a credential and do not publish or share it.
The preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live
For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then choose Go live in YouTube Live Control Room. Starting MediaLive and publishing the YouTube event are related but distinct actions.

Understand charges while the channel is Idle
Idle does not mean free. AWS documents charges for idle channels, and an attached push input can also incur idle input charges when its channel is not running. The amount depends on current regional pricing and the actual channel and input configuration; check the AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing page before estimating costs.
