Install the Windows build of wkhtmltopdf, then run wkhtmltopdf https://example.com C:UsersyouDownloadspage.pdf in Command Prompt or PowerShell. Replace the URL and destination with your own. If either path contains spaces, enclose it in quotation marks.
Install wkhtmltopdf on Windows
- Open the official downloads page and choose a Windows installer or archive that matches your system. The page lists 32-bit and 64-bit installers for Vista or later, and 7z archives for XP/2003 or later. Confirm the download is still offered and suitable for your Windows environment before installing.
- Run the installer, or extract the archive to a folder you can access. The page lists version 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020; because that release information is old, check the official page for current availability rather than assuming it is the newest version today.
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and enter
wkhtmltopdf --version. If Windows cannot find the command, runwkhtmltopdf.exeusing its full file path or add the folder containing it to PATH. Installer behavior may vary.
Convert a webpage to PDF
Use this basic form in Command Prompt or PowerShell:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com C:UsersyouDownloadspage.pdfThe first argument is the webpage URL; the second is where to save the PDF. For a destination path containing spaces, quote it:
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com "C:UsersyouDownloadsAnnual report.pdf"When the command finishes, open the output PDF and check that the content and layout are usable. This is especially important for pages with complex layouts or interactive content.

Adjust page size, orientation, and margins
Once a basic conversion works, add options before the URL and output path. The usage manual documents page size, orientation, margins, grayscale output, image quality, and headers and footers. For example:
wkhtmltopdf --page-size Letter --orientation Landscape https://example.com C:Reportspage.pdfThis illustrates the option syntax; it has not been verified across every Windows release. The manual also supports header and footer placeholders including [page], [topage], [webpage], and [title]. Consult the usage manual for the option names and placement details before adding them to your command.

The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Take particular care if you automate conversions or process content supplied by other people. wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line HTML-to-PDF tool that uses the Qt WebKit rendering engine, runs headlessly, and is identified by the project as LGPLv3.

Troubleshooting
- “wkhtmltopdf is not recognized” or command not found: Use the full path to
wkhtmltopdf.exe, or add its containing folder to PATH, then reopen the terminal and retry. - The output path is rejected: Check that the destination folder exists and that you have permission to write there. Put quotation marks around paths containing spaces.
- No usable PDF appears: Confirm the URL is reachable from the computer running the command, check the terminal output for errors, and verify the destination path. Open any generated file to inspect its content and layout.
- A modern or interactive page renders incorrectly: The available project information does not establish reliable rendering for current JavaScript-heavy sites or current Windows versions. The project uses Qt WebKit; results may not match a modern browser. Verify the specific page output rather than assuming it will render faithfully.
