For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are recommended video bitrates for live ingest, not guarantees of identical picture quality for every video or connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds. A 24-hour playlist does not change the published bitrate recommendation.
Choose the bitrate for your ingest codec
Use YouTube’s live-encoder settings, not its separate guidance for uploading prerecorded videos. At 4K/2160p and 60 fps, YouTube’s recommendations are:

The minimums are not the recommended targets. Use the rate for the codec you actually send to YouTube; do not apply the lower AV1/HEVC recommendation to an H.264 stream. Plan upload capacity with headroom
Your connection must sustain the full outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% capacity in reserve. For a 50 Mbps H.264 video stream, that means planning for approximately 60 Mbps of available upload capacity; this is the video stream plus the recommended headroom, not a second bitrate setting. Allow more capacity if you send a separate backup stream or other devices share a congested connection. YouTube streaming tips.

For an AV1 or HEVC stream at the recommended 35 Mbps, the same 20% margin implies approximately 42 Mbps available upload. Check sustained upload capacity where the encoder will run, rather than relying only on the advertised maximum of an internet plan. Congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, and other traffic can reduce what is actually available to the encoder.
Set the encoder for a stable live stream
- Resolution and frame rate: 3840 × 2160 (4K/2160p), 60 fps.
- Rate control: CBR, with the codec-specific bitrate above.
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: use RTMPS when your encoder supports it.
- Latency: for 4K at 60 fps, YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable; the stream uses normal latency.
Exact menu names differ between encoder applications, so look for the equivalent output, rate-control, keyframe, and server settings in your software or hardware encoder. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not change the bitrate you should send as ingest.

Prepare and test before the 24-hour run
- Confirm the source and playlist. Check that the video files play correctly, the intended order and looping behavior are set in your chosen playback or streaming setup, and the audio is present. Use content you have the rights to stream; a 24-hour loop does not make copyrighted material permissible.
- Configure the encoder and stream destination. Select 4K/2160p at 60 fps, the correct codec and bitrate, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available. Use the stream key for the YouTube live event you intend to run, and keep the key private.
- Run a representative test. Test with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and type of motion as the planned playlist. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before starting the full run. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube live encoder settings.
- Check continuity and recovery. Prepare the encoder in advance, test any failover arrangement, and verify that a local recording is actually being written and continues to grow. Monitor audio and video quality during the run. YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.
Know the archive and DVR limits
Do not rely on YouTube to archive the full 24 hours
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a warning, not a claim that every longer stream will fail to archive. Make a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the full playlist run. YouTube live stream archives.
Viewer rewind may be restricted
DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. This is a viewer playback limitation, separate from your ingest bitrate. YouTube DVR settings.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream problems
- Connection warnings or an unstable stream: Check sustained upload capacity and network congestion. Reduce competing traffic or move to a more reliable connection; the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload, with YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve.
- Stream health is poor despite sufficient advertised bandwidth: Measure or observe the connection while the stream is active. Other devices, Wi-Fi interference, and network congestion can make the encoder’s available upload lower than the plan’s stated maximum.
- Settings are rejected or the stream does not match the target: Verify that the encoder is sending the intended codec, 3840 × 2160 resolution, 60 fps, CBR, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds or less than or equal to YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- The picture or audio degrades during the loop: Inspect the source files and monitor the live preview and stream health; use a test that includes representative movement and audio rather than a static opening frame.
- The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far back: A 24-hour stream exceeds YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive and DVR thresholds. Keep a local recording and do not promise a complete YouTube replay or full rewind.
