You can still turn off the display: screen timeout and computer sleep are separate settings. If you are watching a playlist, also check YouTube’s Sleep Timer. If you are broadcasting to YouTube from an encoder on that computer, the computer must stay awake so the encoder can keep sending its feed.
First, identify what stopped
“YouTube stream” can mean either watching a playlist in a browser or sending a live broadcast to YouTube from software on your computer. The fixes overlap, but the causes do not:
- Watching a playlist: system sleep can interrupt the computer’s playback, while YouTube’s Sleep Timer can pause the video independently.
- Broadcasting with an encoder: if the computer running the encoder sleeps, it cannot continue sending the live feed. This follows from YouTube’s encoder workflow; YouTube’s help pages do not specify a separate sleep rule for every encoder.
Notice whether playback or the broadcast stops exactly when the display goes dark. A dark display alone does not prove the computer has slept.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents this path in its Windows 11 power settings guidance.
- Under Make my device sleep after, choose a longer interval or Never for the power condition you will use during the session.
- Check both On battery power and When plugged in. Laptops may use different sleep timers in each state; choose the setting for the state that applies.
- If you want the display to go dark, set Turn my screen off after separately. Leave a suitable screen timeout while preventing device sleep.
Windows 11 options can vary by device and policy. On battery, Battery Saver can limit background activity. Microsoft also describes network behavior while a computer sleeps on battery, but changing a network setting is not a substitute for keeping the computer awake when playback or encoding must continue. Keep a Mac awake during the session
- On a Mac laptop, open System Settings > Battery and inspect the settings for the power state you are using.
- When the Mac is connected to a power adapter, look for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, if that option is available on your model and macOS release.
- For a desktop Mac, check its sleep and wake controls in Energy settings.
Apple’s Mac sleep and wake guidance notes that preventing or delaying sleep can increase power consumption. Menu labels and available options vary by model and macOS version. For a long session, use the awake setting while plugged in, then restore your usual sleep behavior if appropriate.
Check YouTube’s Sleep Timer
If you are watching a video or playlist and the computer remains awake when playback stops, check the player timer. On desktop, open the video, select Settings > Sleep Timer, then adjust or disable the timer. YouTube says the timer pauses the video after the selected duration. It is separate from your computer’s sleep settings and does not control a creator’s outgoing encoder feed. See YouTube’s Sleep Timer instructions.

If you are broadcasting a live stream from the computer
YouTube supports live streaming by mobile, webcam, or encoder. An encoder can be software running on the computer or standalone hardware. For an encoder setup, YouTube connects the encoder to the live stream using a stream URL and key; its guidance also recommends monitoring the stream. - Keep the computer running the software encoder awake and connected to the network for the duration of the broadcast.
- Watch the encoder and YouTube’s stream health while live.
- If viewers on different connections report the same interruption, investigate the encoder and outbound connection rather than assuming the viewer’s screen or sleep settings are responsible.
A standalone hardware encoder is a different production arrangement, not a fix needed for ordinary playlist playback. The sources cited here do not establish browser, network, or YouTube service issues as causes of a particular interruption when the computer is awake; investigate those separately if the sleep and player-timer checks do not help.

Choose the fix that matches the interruption

Common problems and what to check next
- The display turns off and playback stops: check the sleep timeout, not just the screen-off timer. The display can turn off while the computer stays awake.
- Playback stops after a predictable interval: check YouTube’s Sleep Timer, even if the computer is still awake.
- A laptop works while plugged in but not on battery: compare the two sleep-timeout settings and review Battery Saver behavior.
- The live broadcast ends when the computer sleeps: keep the computer running the software encoder awake; check the encoder and stream health.
- The computer is awake, the timer is not responsible, and playback still stops: investigate browser, network, or service-specific causes separately. The cited platform guidance does not establish a particular cause in that situation.
