To archive a public web page with Apify, run a screenshot Actor that accepts the page URL, choose an image or PDF output, and enable full-page capture if the entire scrollable page matters. Then download the result and keep it with the original and final URL, capture time, page title, status, and relevant capture settings. A screenshot preserves a rendered view at one moment; it does not, by itself, establish authenticity, completeness, or legal admissibility.
Capture a page with an Apify screenshot Actor
- Select an Actor. Choose an Apify Actor that accepts page URLs and produces the artifact you need. Apify describes Actors as packaged tools that can be run and shared on its platform; input fields and options vary by Actor. See Apify Store.[c001]
- Enter the public page URL. Submit an HTTP(S) URL. If you need several pages, choose an Actor whose input accepts multiple URLs; batch support is Actor-specific.[c002][c005]
- Choose the output and page coverage. Select an image format such as PNG or a PDF if the Actor offers it. Enable full-page capture when material below the initial viewport is relevant. Check the Actor’s input and output documentation rather than assuming every Actor supports the same formats or settings.[c002][c004]
- Run the Actor and inspect the result for each URL. Treat a failed or blocked page as a failed capture, not as an archived copy of the intended page. Keep any status and error information with the result.[c002]
- Download and preserve the artifact. Copy the image or PDF into storage you control if you need it beyond the Actor’s applicable storage-retention period. The reviewed Actor documentation says unnamed run storage is removed according to the applicable plan retention period; check the current Actor and plan details before relying on hosted retention.[c002]
- Save capture context alongside the file. Record the source URL and final URL if available, capture timestamp, page title, output format, viewport or device details, status, and any adjustments or limitations that affect what the image shows. The reviewed screenshot Actor documents several of these fields, but not every Actor exposes all of them.[c002]
Apify’s Actor FAQ explicitly addresses taking full-page screenshots of many URLs at once and converting a URL to PDF. Use those as questions to check against the specific Actor’s current input and output documentation, not as a guarantee that every screenshot Actor supports batch capture or PDF.
What to retain with the screenshot
An image or PDF is more useful as an archive when another person can identify what was captured and how. Preserve the original file without editing it, and put a simple manifest or adjacent text file with the capture details. Include only fields actually returned or observed; do not infer missing metadata.
| Record | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Submitted URL and final URL, if available | Shows the requested address and, where reported, the address reached after redirects. |
| Capture timestamp and page title | Helps identify the page and the time represented by the capture. |
| HTTP status, Actor status, and errors | Distinguishes a successful page capture from a failed request or a block page. |
| Artifact format, dimensions, viewport, and device details | Describes how much of the rendered page is visible and the conditions under which it was captured. |
| Full-page or truncated status | Clarifies whether the capture includes the full scrollable page or has a height limit. |
| Capture adjustments | Notes settings or interventions that could change the rendered appearance. |
The screenshot Actor documentation describes an artifact link, final URL, HTTP status, page title, capture timestamp, dimensions, device and viewport information, and whether an image was full-page or truncated. These are Actor-specific documented fields, not a platform-wide guarantee.[c002] A separate community-maintained Web Evidence Pack Actor documents a bundle containing a PDF, full-page PNG, visible text, optional rendered HTML, final URL, status, title, timestamp, and SHA-256 fingerprint. Those bundle contents belong to that particular Actor; do not assume they come with an ordinary screenshot run.[c003]

What a screenshot can and cannot establish
A screenshot is evidence of a particular rendered visual state, and a PDF is likewise a static output. Neither is a replayable copy of every page resource, script, or interaction.[c002][c003][c006] A screenshot alone should not be presented as proof of who published a page, what it showed at an earlier time, that no content was omitted, or that a court will admit it.
The Web Evidence Pack Actor documentation puts the timestamp-and-hash limitation plainly: “A timestamp and hash help establish a reproducible record, but they are not a qualified timestamp or a guarantee of legal admissibility.”[c003] A timestamp can help identify when a capture was recorded, and a hash can help detect whether a saved file later changed; neither independently authenticates the source page or guarantees a legal outcome.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Access and blocking: The reviewed screenshot Actor does not log in, solve captchas, or bypass bot protection. Sites that block automated browsers may fail or return a block page.[c002]
- Rendering differences: Headless browser output can differ from what a reader sees in a local browser. A marketplace Actor documents a full-page screenshot cap of 16,384 pixels in height; that limit applies to that Actor and may change.[c004]
- Scope of the record: A captured view cannot show page states that were not rendered during the run, such as content behind an interaction that was never triggered.
- Lawful use: Follow applicable access permissions, site terms, privacy obligations, and evidence-handling requirements. The Web Evidence Pack Actor limits itself to public HTTP(S) pages and says users must use it only for pages they may lawfully access and process.[c003]
When you need a fuller preservation record
If a static screenshot is not enough, consider whether your use case requires searchable text, additional export formats, or a collection report. An ABI industry review describes Pagefreezer WebPreserver exports in image PDF, searchable PDF (OCR), WARC, MHTML, and JPEG, plus a collection report listing capture information. That review makes it a possible fit for a more specialized evidence workflow, not a requirement for routine screenshots; its claims should be treated as the review’s description.[c006]
A Pagefreezer vendor report dated 2020-08-13 describes WebPreserver as a browser extension for capturing web and social-media content with metadata and export options. Those are vendor claims from that dated report, not an independently established guarantee of current product behavior.[c007]

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. It is an alternative to an Apify Actor, not a substitute for preserving context or handling evidence carefully.

Troubleshooting an Apify capture
- The run fails or returns an error: Check the Actor run status and its error details. Confirm that the input URL is public and that the fields you supplied match that Actor’s documented input. Retain the error instead of labeling the page captured.[c002]
- The result shows a CAPTCHA or block page: The reviewed Actor does not solve captchas or bypass bot protection. Record that the target was blocked; do not describe the block page as the target page’s content.[c002]
- The screenshot misses content lower on the page: Check that full-page capture is supported and enabled. Review whether the Actor reports truncation; the documented 16,384-pixel limit belongs to one marketplace Actor, not all Actors.[c004]
- You cannot find an expected metadata field: Outputs differ by Actor. Consult that Actor’s documentation and mark unavailable fields as unavailable rather than filling them in from assumptions.[c002]
- The stored artifact is no longer available: Download or copy the file into your own retention system promptly, and keep its identifying context with it. Unnamed run storage follows the applicable plan retention period described in the reviewed Actor documentation.[c002]
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Apify screenshot alone prove a page was published by a particular person or organization?
No. A rendered image records what the capture showed, but alone it does not establish authorship or authenticity.
Does a timestamp or SHA-256 fingerprint make a capture legally admissible?
No. The Web Evidence Pack Actor documentation says a timestamp and hash can help with reproducibility, but are not a qualified timestamp or a guarantee of legal admissibility.
