To document a CAPTCHA-protected page, capture the browser state you need: the visible viewport for the challenge and nearby context, the CAPTCHA widget alone for a focused report, or the full page when content below the fold matters. A screenshot records what rendered in that browser session; it does not solve, pass, or verify the CAPTCHA.
Choose what part of the CAPTCHA page to capture
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. Pick the scope that answers the question your report needs to address.

Use a screenshot to document visual appearance. If you need page structure or readable text rather than a picture of the rendered state, Playwright identifies accessibility snapshots as a more suitable option.
How do I take a screenshot of a CAPTCHA page?
For a page you are authorized to access or test, Playwright can open it in a browser and save a screenshot. This Node.js example captures the visible viewport as a PNG; it does not interact with or submit the CAPTCHA.

})();Playwright’s basic Page API shows this browser, page, navigation, and screenshot pattern. Choose a wait condition that suits the page: a dynamic challenge may render after the initial document loads, so wait for the visible state you actually intend to document before capturing. Do not assume that navigation completion means a CAPTCHA has appeared.
Capture a particular widget
If the CAPTCHA is inside a known element, select it and take an element screenshot. Replace the selector with one that matches the page you are documenting.

Capture the entire page
Use fullPage: true when below-the-fold content matters. This captures the whole page rather than only the current viewport; it is not an element screenshot.

Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. PNG is a practical choice for text and interface details; use JPEG or WebP when their smaller output is more useful to your workflow. Playwright’s device scale setting captures at device-pixel ratio, while CSS scale uses CSS-pixel sizing. Pick the scale based on whether the report needs sharper detail or a more compact image, and check the saved file at its intended display size.

Why is the CAPTCHA missing from my screenshot?
A missing challenge does not necessarily mean the screenshot failed. CAPTCHA behavior depends on the integration and session. Google distinguishes score-based reCAPTCHA keys, which do not display a checkbox or challenge, from checkbox, policy-based challenge, and invisible integrations that may show a challenge. A screenshot only reflects what the browser rendered at capture time.

- Confirm that the page reached the state you meant to record; a challenge may render after initial navigation.
- Check whether the site’s reCAPTCHA integration is expected to show a visible challenge in that session.
- For a widget-focused capture, verify that the target selector identifies the rendered element; otherwise use a viewport screenshot.
- If the goal is testing your own integration, use Google’s test configuration rather than relying on a production challenge as a fixed fixture.
What to do if Google shows an automated-query warning
An automated-query warning is a different situation from documenting an ordinary CAPTCHA widget. Follow Google’s diagnostic help for the CAPTCHA page. Google says that if a normal CAPTCHA appears there, the originating site may have a configuration issue and suggests notifying the site. A screenshot can help record what appeared, but it does not diagnose or clear the warning.
Test your own reCAPTCHA integration safely
For a site you own, Google’s developer guidance offers test configurations so test runs do not depend on a production challenge.
- For reCAPTCHA v3, Google says to use a separate testing key.
- For v2, Google provides test keys that always produce “No CAPTCHA” and pass verification. Google warns that these keys are for testing, not production traffic.
Use the test setup to make an integration test reproducible, and reserve screenshots of production behavior for documenting the actual state observed there. A test key that intentionally passes is not evidence that a production user’s challenge was displayed or solved.
CAPTCHA screenshot troubleshooting
