It describes the disconnection, not who caused it: the code alone cannot tell you whether the issue is OBS, YouTube’s ingest server, your PC, router, Wi-Fi, firewall, or another part of the network path. Work through reversible checks first, then escalate to your internet provider if the connection still drops.
What OBS error 10054 means
Windows identifies error 10054 as WSAECONNRESET: “An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.” A reset can happen for more than one reason, including when the peer application stops, a host or remote network interface is disabled, or keep-alive activity detects a failure. The code does not prove that YouTube deliberately ended your stream or identify a specific faulty device. Microsoft’s Windows Sockets error-code reference defines the error but does not diagnose a particular streaming incident.
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between your computer and the remote stream ingest server, or to a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. The cause may be outside OBS Studio’s control. Use the checks below to isolate settings, software, the local network, and finally the upstream connection. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide is dated September 30, 2024; menu labels and options can differ across OBS versions.
1. Check the stream server and bitrate
Try another ingest server if available
If the streaming service offers a choice of server, test another one. This is a reversible way to check whether the selected route to the ingest server is contributing to the interruption. A successful test does not by itself identify the original cause.

Match bitrate to stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and review the video bitrate used by your streaming output. Reduce it for a test if your connection may not sustain it. OBS Project’s 2024 guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, provided the upload speed is stable and the streaming service’s bitrate limits are respected. This is a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed YouTube setting or a promise that a connection will remain stable.
Lowering bitrate can improve stability but reduces the data available for picture quality. Change one setting at a time and observe whether the disconnections stop; avoid treating a lower bitrate as proof that the underlying network issue is fixed.

2. Test OBS network options on Windows
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Change one option at a time, test a stream, and restore the default if a change makes no difference or causes another problem.
- Bind to IP: leave this at Default, as OBS recommends.
- Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing: on Windows, test these options if they are available in your OBS version.
- IP Family: you can test IPv4 Only. If it does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment: this may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not repair the underlying connection. It can lower video quality while adapting to the available bandwidth.
These are diagnostic adjustments, not universal fixes. Keep track of the original values so you can undo a test cleanly.

3. Isolate VPNs, security software, and network utilities
A VPN can make the path to the stream server unstable, and security software can interfere with OBS-to-server traffic. Bundled network-prioritization utilities may also affect OBS traffic.
- Temporarily test without a suspected VPN or network-prioritization utility, changing only one item at a time.
- If you suspect security software, make a brief test without the suspected interference only if you can do so safely.
- If the test establishes that security software is blocking OBS, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving protection off.
A change that stops the disconnections helps isolate the cause; it does not justify leaving security protections disabled.

4. Check the adapter and connection medium
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the PC is streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection if practical. This helps determine whether the wireless link is contributing to the drops, but buying a cable is not a guaranteed fix: resets can originate elsewhere along the network path.
Update the network driver
Get the latest network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. OBS recommends using the manufacturer’s drivers; avoid assuming a generic driver utility is the right source.

Do not replace hardware based on the code alone
Cables, network cards, modem or router equipment, switches, and extenders can all be possible points of failure. The error itself does not establish that any one of them is defective. If you are unsure, ask your internet provider before replacing equipment.

Restart both the modem and router, then test OBS again. If the disconnections continue after the settings, software, adapter, and connection checks, contact your internet service provider. Explain when the stream disconnects and what tests you have already tried; congestion or routing problems beyond your home network may require the ISP’s help.
