To generate a social media card, add page-specific Open Graph tags to the page’s HTML <head>, publish an image that the platform’s crawler can fetch, then inspect the live URL in the target platform’s preview tool. Metadata should be present in the HTML response—not only added after a visitor’s browser runs JavaScript—so crawlers can read the right title, description, destination URL, and image.

What a social media card uses

A link preview is driven largely by metadata in the shared page’s HTML. Open Graph (OG) is a protocol for describing a page’s title, type, URL, image, and other details. Platforms can interpret metadata differently, so tags improve the information available to a crawler but cannot guarantee identical presentation everywhere. The Open Graph protocol defines four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. It lists og:description as a standard additional property. LinkedIn’s sharing guidance also identifies title, image, description, and URL tags for its sharing module. LinkedIn Help

Write page-specific metadata

Give each page its own accurate title, concise description, canonical URL, and suitable image when its content differs from other pages. A site-wide fallback image can be useful, but it should still represent the page being shared. The following is a baseline for an article or landing page; replace the example values with the page’s real information:

<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:title" content="A specific, accurate page title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A short summary of this page">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-card.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of what the social card image communicates">

Use an appropriate og:type for the page; website is one protocol example, not the only available type. Make og:image an absolute URL and describe the image in og:image:alt. The alt text should explain what the image communicates, rather than serve as a caption. The protocol also documents optional image properties such as MIME type, width, height, and secure URL. Use platform-specific tags when appropriate

If a target platform’s current guidance calls for a separate card declaration, add its tags as well as OG metadata. For example, Great Docs documents twitter:card with summary_large_image, along with Twitter-specific title, description, and image metadata. That example does not mean one set of tags ensures the same card on every service; check the destination platform’s current documentation. Great Docs social-card guide

Prepare an image for the intended platform

Use an image that clearly represents the page and remains legible at preview size. Publish it at a public, crawler-accessible URL without authentication or access rules that block the platform’s request. Platform-specific limits are not universal standards.

LinkedIn’s stated image guidance

LinkedIn Help specifies a minimum image size of 1200 × 627 pixels, a maximum file size of 5 MB, and a recommended 1.91:1 aspect ratio for its sharing module. It also says images under 401 pixels wide display as thumbnails. These are LinkedIn figures, not requirements for every social network or messaging app. The help page was last updated two years before it was accessed in 2026, so check its live guidance before relying on exact limits. LinkedIn identifies blocked or protected image locations as a possible reason an image does not appear. LinkedIn Help

Other design considerations

Great Docs recommends 1200 × 630 pixels for its own social-card workflow, PNG for graphics or text, and JPEG for photos. Those are its recommendations, not a cross-platform standard. It also advises a restrained, high-contrast composition and keeping important details within a central safe area. Great Docs social-card guide

Generate and verify cards on a live site

  1. Choose the page data. For every URL, decide on its title, short description, canonical URL, and share image. Ensure the values describe that particular page.
  2. Render metadata in the HTML head. Add the OG tags to the page’s rendered HTML. For a static site or framework, generate tags at build time or server-render them so each page’s response contains its own metadata. Great Docs demonstrates generating values per page and checking the built HTML; it does not establish that every client-rendered implementation will be crawled consistently. Great Docs social-card guide
  3. Publish an accessible image. Use an absolute HTTPS image URL and check that a crawler can retrieve the asset without a login or blocked request. Apply the intended platform’s current file and dimension guidance.
  4. Inspect the served HTML. View the deployed page source or otherwise inspect the actual HTML response. Confirm the title, description, URL, image, and any platform-specific fields match the page. Do not rely only on what appears after scripts run in a browser.
  5. Test with the target platform. Submit the live URL to the platform’s available preview or inspection tool. Check the title, description, image selection and crop, and destination URL. Great Docs lists LinkedIn Post Inspector and Facebook Sharing Debugger and demonstrates a general preview tool; availability and interfaces may change, so confirm the current tool before using it. Great Docs social-card guide
  6. Correct and retest. If the preview is wrong, first fix the deployed tags or image access, then use the platform’s available inspector or cache-refresh mechanism and check again.

Troubleshoot a wrong or missing preview

The card still shows old information

Check the live HTML first. If it contains the updated metadata, use the destination platform’s available inspector or cache-refresh tool to test the URL again. Cache behavior and refresh timing vary; there is no universal cache duration established here.

The image is missing or incorrect

  • Confirm og:image is the intended absolute URL, not a relative path.
  • Request the image URL without signing in and ensure site rules do not block crawler access. LinkedIn specifically notes that blocked or protected image locations can prevent retrieval. LinkedIn Help
  • Check the image’s format, dimensions, and file size against the target platform’s current guidance; LinkedIn’s figures should not be applied to other services by default.
  • Check that the image itself is appropriate for the page and that any platform-specific image tag points to the right asset.

The preview uses another page’s title or image

Inspect the metadata for the exact route being shared. Ensure that route emits its own title, description, canonical URL, and image rather than inheriting values from a site-wide template or a different page.

If you need a rendered screenshot of a page or image for a workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a capture. The API accepts PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, or a PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. ScreenshotNeo accepts and removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding Open Graph tags guarantee the same preview on every platform?

No. Platforms may interpret metadata and image requirements differently, so test the live URL on each service you target.

Should I use one image for every page?

A shared default can work when it accurately represents each page. Use page-specific images when pages need distinct previews.
