Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Black bars usually come from either padding already baked into the pre-recorded video or a mismatch between the video and the encoder’s output canvas. Check the file outside YouTube first. If the bars are part of its picture, crop or reframe the source; if the file fills its frame but the live preview does not, correct the encoder’s canvas or source-fit setting. For a conventional horizontal stream, use a 16:9 output and preview it in YouTube Live Control Room before going live.
First, find out where the black bars are coming from
YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device. A border in the player therefore does not always mean the stream is faulty. YouTube also advises against adding black bars directly to a video because they can interfere with dynamic player sizing. YouTube Help: video resolution and aspect ratios
- Open the original video file outside YouTube. Inspect it at its original dimensions in a video player or editor. If black regions are visible inside the image, they are embedded in the source.
- Compare it with the live preview. If the source fills its frame but the Live Control Room preview shows bars, check the encoder’s output canvas and how it fits, fills, or crops the media source.
- Check the public player on another screen if needed. If the preview and source look correct but the bars appear only in a particular player or device presentation, the player may be adapting to the video’s shape rather than adding an error to the stream.
This source-versus-output check is a practical diagnostic, not a named test specified by YouTube.
Fix black bars embedded in the video
If the bars are visible in the original file, changing YouTube’s live settings will not remove them: they are part of the video pixels. Reframe the media in a video editor before streaming it.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Choose the intended output shape. For a standard horizontal stream, use a 16:9 canvas.
- Crop or enlarge the source until it fills that canvas, then check that important text, faces, and other content remain in frame. Cropping a non-16:9 video can cut off its edges.
- If cropping would remove important content, place the full image on a designed background instead. That preserves the whole source but may leave unused space; avoid adding black padding unless it is an intentional creative choice.
- Export the corrected file and inspect the exported result before using it in the live workflow.
Fix bars introduced by the encoder or streaming workflow
If the original file has no bars, find the controls for the encoder’s output canvas and the media source’s fit, fill, or crop behavior. The exact menu labels differ by application, and YouTube’s general guidance does not establish a universal settings path.
- Set a 16:9 output canvas for a conventional horizontal stream.
- Make the source fill the canvas if full-frame horizontal presentation is the goal. A “fit” option may preserve the entire image and leave unused space; a “fill” or crop option may remove the edges.
- Check that the source and output use compatible dimensions. Common YouTube 16:9 examples are 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), and 854×480 (480p). These are format examples, not a promise of a particular stream quality. YouTube Help: video resolution and aspect ratios
- Use square pixels and progressive scan as encoder sanity checks, as YouTube recommends. These settings are not established as the cause of every black-bar problem. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Changing the output shape alone cannot remove bars already present inside the source image. Check the preview after adjusting the source and canvas together.

Choose deliberately for vertical or nonstandard video
A vertical or unusual-shaped source is not inherently defective. YouTube’s player can adapt to different video shapes, and the best presentation depends on whether you want the whole source visible or a horizontal, edge-to-edge image.
- Keep the whole source: preserve its shape and accept that the player or layout may show space around it.
- Fill a horizontal 16:9 frame: crop or enlarge the source, or create a background layout. This is a presentation choice, not a YouTube-required correction.
- Use a vertical live format: YouTube describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats for applicable Live Control Room workflows, including a center-cropped vertical option. Choosing vertical output is separate from fixing bars baked into a file. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming
Preview before starting the live stream
