Then confirm the YouTube server and stream are correct and start the encoder again. If it still will not connect, diagnose the encoder, network, or YouTube account separately: a valid key cannot fix those problems.
Restore the YouTube connection after OBS loses its key
- Get the current key. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live to open Live Control Room, then choose the Stream tab and copy the current stream key. Previously used stream settings may load automatically, but a reset or changed key must be replaced. YouTube’s stream setup guidance explains where to find the key and server details.
- Replace the key in OBS. Open Settings → Stream and paste the current YouTube key into the stream key field. Verify the service and server selection, including that the server URL and key are for the intended YouTube stream.
- Start the encoder. Select Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and select Go live if that stream’s workflow requires it. Do not assume auto-start or auto-stop is enabled; check the current stream settings.
- Confirm the result. Check the Live Control Room status and preview, and inspect the public watch page if appropriate. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions require both the stream URL and key; copying only one may leave OBS pointed at the wrong destination.
A stream key is a credential and destination identifier that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; it is not something you buy. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it. Editors and viewers cannot.
If OBS still will not connect
Check for a key or destination mismatch
Copy the key again from the current stream in Live Control Room and verify that the selected YouTube service/server and URL belong to that stream. A key from another stream, or a key that was reset after OBS saved it, can prevent the encoder from connecting. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for encoder errors directs creators to get the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder.
Look for encoder errors
Update OBS if an update is available, review its output and error messages, and check CPU load while streaming. If you record locally, inspect that file to help distinguish an encoder or source problem from a YouTube connection problem. YouTube also suggests trying a different encoder when checks of the source and encoder do not explain poor output.

Separate dropped frames from a rejected key
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; too many can disconnect a stream. A key reset calls for replacing the key, but persistent dropped frames point toward connectivity or bitrate instead. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide lists security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, network settings, and bitrate among possible diagnostic areas. Treat these as checks, not guaranteed fixes. Lowering bitrate may help an overloaded connection, but reduces video quality and does not repair the underlying network.
Check upload capacity and network reliability
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in available upload capacity. For a primary and backup encoder, its guidance says to plan for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. These are YouTube recommendations, not a universal measured threshold. Check the total bitrate of the encoders you are actually using against stable outbound capacity; a network may have a high advertised speed but still fluctuate under load. YouTube’s streaming tips advise using a reliable connection and adequate upload bandwidth.

Rule out a YouTube restriction
Check YouTube Studio for strikes or other account and stream restrictions. Copyright matches can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination, and strikes can also terminate a stream. Changing the key does not remove a policy restriction. Even when you have licensed rights, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance.
Make a continuous OBS stream more resilient
Test backup-encoder failover
If you operate a primary and backup encoder, test the handoff rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then checking that the player switches to the backup. Check the stream on your channel or watch page and on mobile, and continuously monitor audio and video. A backup encoder needs its own planned connection and enough upload capacity; YouTube’s headroom recommendation accounts for the primary and backup bitrates together.

Keep a local recording and verify it is being written
Monitor local archive files to confirm they are growing, and make a separate recording and retention plan for footage you need to keep. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that one archive will preserve a continuous 24/7 broadcast end to end. Plan transitions and the public viewing experience deliberately.
Do not assume a key reset guarantees seamless viewing
After reconnecting, check the current YouTube Studio workflow and the public stream. YouTube and OBS do not establish that every key rejection will retry indefinitely, that every interruption retains the same watch-page URL, or that every stream configuration handles a reconnected encoder identically. Avoid promising viewers uninterrupted playback while diagnosing a stopped stream.
