Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream local videos to YouTube Live in a random order, first shuffle their filenames into a playlist, then pass that playlist to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. FFmpeg plays the entries in playlist order; it does not shuffle them itself. Add -stream_loop -1 to repeat that same shuffled sequence, encode to a YouTube-compatible profile, and send the output to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
How the shuffled FFmpeg workflow works
The concat demuxer reads files one after another in the order listed. Randomness therefore comes from generating a shuffled playlist before starting FFmpeg. If you loop that input, FFmpeg repeats the same order; a fresh random order requires a separate step to regenerate the playlist. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Inspect the local videos and decide whether they can be concatenated as-is or need normalization.
- Generate a text playlist whose entries are in the desired randomized order.
- Configure YouTube Live and obtain the current ingest server URL and stream key.
- Run FFmpeg with the playlist, loop option if wanted, suitable encoding settings, and the YouTube destination.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before the event.
Prepare files and choose a concatenation method
Before making the playlist, inspect representative files for video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio presence and layout, and duration. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Different duration metadata can also create gaps or artifacts at boundaries. Arbitrary files from different sources are unlikely to match perfectly, so test transitions or normalize them to a common profile first.
| Method | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Concat demuxer with stream copy (-c copy) |
Files with matching streams and parameters, when the output container supports the encoded streams. | Fast and avoids re-encoding, but cannot apply filters and is not suitable for every file collection or target container. |
| Normalize or re-encode; use the concat filter when needed | Mixed files or a consistent output profile is required. | More flexible, but takes processing resources and re-encoding can affect quality. Test resource use and transitions. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat filter for cases that require re-encoding from the concat demuxer for compatible files. Stream-copy behavior and limitations are described in the FFmpeg documentation.

Create a shuffled concat playlist
Create a plain-text file with one file entry for each clip, in the order you want played. For example, a playlist can contain:
file '/absolute/path/clip-c.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/clip-a.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/clip-b.mp4'
This is only an example of the playlist format; use paths that exist on your system. Absolute paths avoid ambiguity about the working directory. If you use relative paths, make sure they resolve from the directory FFmpeg uses. Paths containing quotes or unusual characters need correct escaping for the concat-list syntax.

Shuffle the filenames with a method appropriate to your operating system, then write them into the playlist in that order. A command such as shuf is available in some Unix-like environments but is not universal; use a platform-appropriate script or tool rather than assuming it exists everywhere. Keep the playlist and its referenced files trusted. The concat demuxer applies safe-path behavior, so changing safety options to admit unusual paths should be done cautiously.
Loop and send the playlist with FFmpeg
Use this as a conceptual command template, not a tested command. Replace every placeholder, confirm options supported by your FFmpeg build, and adapt the frame rate, resolution, codec, bitrate, and destination to your media and YouTube’s current settings.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v <video-bitrate> -maxrate <video-bitrate>
-bufsize <buffer-size> -g <keyframe-interval-in-frames>
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMPS ingest URL>/<stream key>"
-rereads input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1loops the playlist input indefinitely. It repeats the same shuffled order; it does not reshuffle between passes.-f concat -i playlist.txtselects the concat demuxer and playlist input.-safe 0relaxes the concat demuxer’s safe-path restrictions. Use it only with a playlist and paths you trust.-c:v libx264and the audio options shown select an H.264/AAC encoding example. Check that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and that the output matches the profile you intend to stream.-gsets the keyframe interval in frames, so calculate it from output frame rate. For a two-second interval, use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.- The destination combines the ingest URL and stream key as required by the selected output. Confirm the exact endpoint format shown for your live stream.
Looping a playlist does not guarantee gapless playback at the loop boundary. Test the exact files, transitions, and loop behavior before relying on it. To get a new random order each cycle, an external process must create a new playlist and coordinate FFmpeg; the implementation depends on your operating system and how seamless the handoff needs to be.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream, then use them in FFmpeg’s output destination.
- Start FFmpeg and check that the stream preview appears in Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live when ready.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose a real key in public examples, screenshots, source repositories, or logs. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the Live Control Room workflow. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. Confirm eligibility before troubleshooting the encoder.

Choose bitrate, keyframes, and connection headroom
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), supported codecs, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. The table below gives its published H.264 SDR recommendations for selected modes; these are recommendations, not guarantees. Use the row that matches the actual output. YouTube publishes separate values for AV1 and HEVC.
| H.264 SDR output | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings page; recheck it when configuring a stream because recommendations can change. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping upload bandwidth about 20% above the stream bitrate. Preview before going live and monitor audio, video, and stream health. Test with movement and audio similar to the intended content; a private or unlisted test may be appropriate.

Troubleshoot playlist, transitions, and YouTube ingest
| Symptom | What to check and do |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits while opening the playlist | Check playlist syntax, paths, file permissions, and whether every listed file opens. Confirm the working directory if using relative paths. |
| Video or audio breaks at a clip boundary | Compare streams, codec parameters, time bases, and duration metadata. Normalize or transcode incompatible files, then test the transitions again. |
| YouTube shows no preview | Confirm the current stream’s server URL and key in Live Control Room, verify channel eligibility, and inspect FFmpeg’s errors and output. |
| Stream health reports issues | Check that the codec and bitrate match the selected output mode, CBR is configured, the keyframe interval is within YouTube’s recommendation, and upload capacity is sufficient. |
| The stream is live but unstable | Leave bandwidth headroom, monitor the stream continuously, and test the same video collection and transitions you plan to use. |
| The order does not change after a loop | This is expected: -stream_loop -1 repeats the same input playlist. Regenerate the playlist and coordinate a restart or handoff if each pass must have a new order. |
