Choose the right API controls for the rule
Before writing a request, identify whether the desired result changes how the page looks, changes its DOM, narrows the capture area, or extracts page information. These are related tasks, but they are not interchangeable.

Selectors are only as reliable as the page’s current markup. Test them in browser developer tools against the live DOM, especially on sites that change class names or render content client-side. OpenGraph.io’s screenshot documentation advises: “For best results when using selectors, test them in browser dev tools first to ensure they target the correct elements.” See its Screenshot API documentation.
Check provider-specific syntax and restrictions
Do not assume screenshot APIs share parameter names, HTTP methods, limits, or execution timing. For example, Screenshot API documents advanced css, js, and hideSelectors options as POST-only. ShotAPI uses custom_css, custom_js, and hide_selectors; its documentation lists those options as premium features and sets a maximum of 10 KB for each injected CSS and JavaScript value. Cloudflare Browser Run uses addStyleTag and addScriptTag entries. Cloudflare supports inline or URL-based style-tag entries and inline script-tag entries. Its documentation also notes that a JavaScript-heavy page may not be complete before client-side rendering finishes; waiting for network idle or a target selector can help. A larger viewport can look blurry if device scale factor is too low. Its userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection.
Apply CSS, JavaScript, and selector rules
Use CSS for visual overrides
Use CSS when the page is present but needs a different appearance, or when hiding elements through a style override. For example, a service that accepts a CSS string might let you set a background or hide a known banner. The actual request field and whether CSS is injected inline or loaded from a URL depend on the provider.
Use JavaScript only for a required page action
JavaScript is appropriate when a capture requires a DOM action such as clicking a control. It is not a substitute for a reliable wait condition: if the action is asynchronous, verify that it completes before the screenshot is taken. API execution order and supported script forms vary.

Use selectors to hide or capture specific elements
A dedicated hide-selector parameter is convenient for simple removals, while CSS can handle broader appearance changes. A capture selector can restrict the output to a particular element rather than the full page. Check how the endpoint behaves if the selector matches nothing, and ensure the selector still identifies the intended element after the page renders.
Wait for the content that matters
A screenshot taken after navigation but before client-side rendering finishes may show a blank or incomplete component. Prefer waiting for a meaningful selector when the desired content has a stable element. Use network idle when the page’s load activity is a useful proxy for readiness. A fixed delay is simpler but may be unnecessarily slow on quick loads and too short on slow ones.

Timeout handling is provider-specific. ShotAPI documents wait_for_selector and a 10-second timeout; check the endpoint reference to understand the effect of a timeout and choose a limit appropriate to the page. Choose capture scope, format, and metadata deliberately
CSS and JavaScript rules affect the rendered page; capture controls determine what output is produced. Decide separately whether you need one element or a full page, which viewport or device setting to use, and which output format and quality suit the next step in your workflow. Cloudflare’s documentation notes that a larger viewport may appear blurry when device scale factor is too low.

Metadata is not the same as a screenshot. A screenshot gives you rendered pixels or a document; metadata extraction returns structured page facts. ScreenshotCore documents page title, Open Graph tags, favicon, HTTP status, image dimensions, fonts, and full page content alongside a screenshot. Check its API documentation for the exact response and capability details. OpenGraph.io documents viewport presets and selectors, and says screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours; download or cache an output you need to retain beyond that period. A practical implementation sequence
- Write down the desired output. Decide whether the task is visual styling, DOM manipulation, hiding, element-only capture, delayed rendering, metadata extraction, or a combination.
- Read the exact endpoint reference. Confirm parameter names, GET or POST support, code-size limits, plan restrictions, selector behavior, wait options, output fields, and retention terms.
- Inspect the page’s live DOM. Test CSS selectors in browser developer tools and confirm the target exists after the page’s client-side content appears.
- Add only the needed rules. Use CSS for appearance, JavaScript for an actual DOM action, and selectors for hide or capture scope where supported.
- Set a readiness condition. Wait for the target selector or an appropriate network-idle condition; use a fixed delay only when it fits the page behavior.
- Verify both output and response. Check that the intended element was styled or captured, that metadata fields are present if required, and that any temporary output URL has been saved before it expires.

Troubleshooting custom screenshot rules
The CSS or JavaScript appears to be ignored
- Check the endpoint’s exact parameter spelling and whether the option requires POST rather than GET.
- Confirm that the service supports the form you sent, such as inline code versus a stylesheet URL.
- Check plan access and size limits. ShotAPI documents a 10 KB maximum for each of its injected CSS and JavaScript values and lists those features among paid-plan options.
The wrong element is hidden or captured
- Inspect the rendered DOM, not only the original HTML, and test the selector in developer tools.
- Check whether the target appears only after client-side rendering; wait for it before capture.
- Prefer a stable selector tied to the intended component rather than a class likely to change.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
- Wait for a meaningful target selector or an appropriate network-idle state.
- Use a fixed delay only if there is no reliable readiness signal, and tune it to the page’s behavior.
- Check the API’s timeout and page-verdict behavior. A changed user agent is not a general workaround for bot protection; Cloudflare explicitly says its
userAgentparameter does not bypass it.
The image looks blurry or metadata is missing
- Review viewport dimensions and device scale factor; a large viewport with too low a scale factor can reduce apparent sharpness.
- Confirm that the selected endpoint returns the metadata fields you need. Do not infer title, Open Graph tags, HTTP status, or other structured data from the image itself.
- If a screenshot URL is temporary, save the output before the documented expiration. OpenGraph.io states its screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours.
