To stream pre-recorded videos as a YouTube Live playlist with subtitles, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source to play local files in order, enable looping if needed, and select an embedded subtitle track. Then send OBS to a YouTube Live event using its server URL and stream key. This can show subtitles in the video, but it does not automatically create YouTube’s separate, selectable live-caption track; that requires a supported caption feed.
Choose how subtitles should appear
There are two different outcomes to plan for:
- Subtitles visible in the picture: OBS’s VLC Video Source can display an embedded subtitle track while playing media. Viewers see the text as part of the video image.
- A selectable YouTube live-caption track: Captions must be sent to YouTube through a supported live-caption method. YouTube says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” OBS displaying a subtitle over the video does not, by itself, establish that YouTube will offer it as a selectable caption track. YouTube’s live caption requirements describe the separate caption workflow.
If accessibility requires selectable captions, arrange and test that feed separately from the OBS subtitle display.
Prepare your files and caption setup
For subtitles displayed in the video
Prepare the playlist’s video files with the desired subtitle track embedded in the media. OBS documentation describes selecting an embedded subtitle track in the VLC Video Source; it does not document loading a separate SRT sidecar file into that playlist source. Check the files before going live to make sure the intended track is embedded and readable.
For YouTube-selectable live captions
Use a supported live-caption delivery method: YouTube documents captions embedded as EIA 608/CEA 708 in the encoder, or a captions ingestion URL used with supported software. The help page currently describes one caption feed per stream entry point and one embedded caption track. Check the options available in YouTube Studio before production, since labels and supported software can change. Read YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Set up the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC and OBS. The VLC Video Source is available when VLC is installed. On 64-bit systems, match the VLC and OBS architecture. See the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
- Add a VLC Video Source. In your OBS scene, add a source and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the media files. Add the local video files in the order you want them to play. Leave shuffle off when sequence matters.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat. Enable Subtitles Enabled and choose the intended Subtitle Track to show embedded subtitles.
- Check the scene. Confirm the video fits the canvas, the audio is audible, and subtitles are visible and legible. Test transitions or other scene elements you plan to use.
Create the YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a stream now or use the Manage tab to schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating or scheduling the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the YouTube Live setup, obtain the Live server URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the stream key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the correct playlist is playing and YouTube receives the video and audio. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
Test captions and monitor the stream
Before relying on a long broadcast, run a complete test from playlist playback through the YouTube watch page. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. If using a separate caption feed, verify that the watch page exposes the selectable caption track; seeing text burned into the picture is not proof that a separate track is arriving.
- Verify file order, loop behavior, audio, and subtitle appearance in OBS.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before starting a scheduled event.
- Watch the stream from the viewer side and confirm the captions behave as intended.
- Plan around YouTube’s archive limit: streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup guide.
Troubleshooting
The VLC Video Source is missing
VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS on a 64-bit system. Install the compatible VLC version, restart OBS if necessary, and check the source list again.

The playlist does not repeat or plays in the wrong order
Review the VLC Video Source playlist order, disable shuffle if sequence matters, and enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart at the end. Re-test the full list rather than checking only its first item.
Subtitles are not visible in OBS
Confirm that the chosen video contains an embedded subtitle track, that Subtitles Enabled is on, and that the correct Subtitle Track is selected. The documented OBS workflow does not establish support for a separate SRT sidecar in this playlist source.

Viewers cannot turn captions on
Text rendered by OBS into the video image is not necessarily a selectable YouTube caption track. Set up a supported caption feed in YouTube Live, then test the track from the watch page. YouTube documents one caption feed per stream entry point and one embedded 608/708 caption track; consult its current caption requirements.
YouTube has no preview or the stream will not start
Check that OBS has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, that the encoder is running, and that YouTube’s preview has received the feed. For scheduled streams, start the event from YouTube Studio after the preview is ready.
