Choose OBS when your school can keep a computer and network connection available and assign someone to monitor and recover the stream. Choose a cloud restreaming service when you want playback to continue without a classroom computer running. Either way, plan separately for interruptions, recording permissions and YouTube’s archive limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not rely on one intact automatic replay of a continuous 24/7 broadcast.
How to choose between OBS and cloud streaming
The practical difference is where playback runs and who owns recovery. OBS plays media from a computer you control. A cloud service runs playback away from that computer, but its features, terms and recovery behavior depend on the provider.
| Decision point | OBS on a local computer | Cloud restreaming service |
|---|---|---|
| Computer and network dependency | The computer running OBS, its media files, and its internet connection must remain available. Someone should be able to respond if the stream stops. | Playback can run without the classroom computer staying on. Confirm the provider’s requirements and service commitments; availability depends on the service. |
| Looping and playlists | OBS Media Source can repeat a file; its VLC Video source can play a playlist. VLC must be installed for that source. | Some services offer prerecorded-video scheduling or continuous streaming. Verify the current playlist, scheduling and looping controls directly with the vendor. |
| Interruption recovery | Plan who checks OBS and YouTube and restarts the encoder or fixes the local connection if needed. | Ask what happens after a YouTube disconnect, whether playback resumes automatically, and what alerts or support are included. |
| Recordings and access | Files remain under your organization’s control on the local system, subject to your own backups and access controls. | Check upload storage, retention, deletion, account access and export options before entrusting recordings to a vendor. |
| 24/7 archive | Changing or restarting the encoder does not remove YouTube’s archive boundary for streams over 12 hours. | A cloud encoder does not remove that boundary either. Design a separate replay or recording workflow. |
| Price and contract | No cloud subscription is inherent to this option, but the school still bears the costs of equipment, connectivity, electricity and staff time. | Compare current price, billing term, slot or channel limits, storage, support and cancellation terms. A fair current price comparison between providers is not established here. |
OBS’s documented capabilities are useful when local control matters and an operator can own monitoring. YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as “a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of pre-recorded videos on YouTube”; that is a directory description, not an endorsement or reliability assessment. OneStream Live describes scheduling prerecorded video and continuous streaming in its vendor material; treat those as vendor-described features, not independently verified uptime, pricing or classroom privacy assurances.
Loop prerecorded lessons in OBS
OBS Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Its Loop property restarts a file when playback completes. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source; OBS documentation says Loop Playlist defaults to On and Shuffle Playlist defaults to Off. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. See OBS Media Sources for the documented options.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Prepare the lesson files. Put the approved recordings somewhere the OBS computer can access throughout the broadcast. Keep the files organized and avoid moving or renaming them while a source depends on their paths.
- Add a single repeating recording. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene, select the video file, and enable the source’s Loop property. Confirm that the source fits the canvas and its audio is audible.
- Build a multi-lesson playlist. Add a VLC Video source, add the desired files to its playlist, and check the Loop Playlist setting. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if lessons must play in a fixed sequence. Install VLC if the source is unavailable.
- Configure the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup, obtain the server URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: restrict who can see it and regenerate it if exposed.
- Set encoding from current platform guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options and constant-bitrate encoding. Select settings supported by your OBS version, connection and YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming every codec or resolution fits every setup. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before going live.
- Test the full playback path. Start a private or unlisted test if your account and school policy allow it. Check video, sound, playlist order, looping, stream health and the receiving YouTube live page before relying on the setup unattended.
- Assign monitoring and recovery. Name the person responsible for checking the broadcast and the steps to take if OBS, the computer, power, internet or YouTube connection fails. A loop setting repeats media; it does not restart a crashed computer or repair a lost connection.
If this is the channel’s first YouTube live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that activation before the planned start.
Plan YouTube archives for a continuous channel
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This guidance applies to streams under that limit; it does not establish a single intact automatic replay for an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Treat the live channel and its replayable lesson recordings as separate outputs.

- Decide whether lessons need their own replayable videos, rather than relying on the channel’s continuous live archive.
- Keep approved source recordings and a separate recording or publishing workflow if the school needs durable, individually accessible lesson VODs.
- Check the live archive and replay behavior on the actual channel before depending on it for access, teaching or retention purposes.

Classroom permissions and account controls
Before uploading or broadcasting lessons, confirm consent and recording permissions, the intended audience and privacy setting, who owns the YouTube account, who can access recordings and stream keys, how long files should be retained, and which institutional rules apply. Requirements depend on your jurisdiction, school policy, the people shown or heard, and the vendor arrangement; the technical streaming instructions do not establish legal or privacy compliance.

For a cloud vendor, ask where files are stored, who can access them, how deletion and export work, what account roles are available, what support covers, and what contract and retention terms apply. Do not assume a vendor’s continuous-stream feature answers these classroom-specific questions.
