The deciding factor is whether FFmpeg can stream-copy compatible files or has to decode, filter, and re-encode them. The PC also needs a stable upload connection and a setup that survives file changes and interruptions. Without the machine’s specifications and a sustained test using the actual playlist, no one can promise that a particular mini PC will stay live unattended.
What determines whether the mini PC can keep up?
Looping a playlist and encoding its video are separate jobs. FFmpeg can read and process media in many ways; the load depends on the processing path you choose, not simply on the fact that files are being played in a loop.
Stream copy: the lighter path, when formats allow it
With stream copy, FFmpeg copies encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. That avoids the main video-encoding workload and does not introduce another generation of encoding quality loss. But it is conditional: the output container and stream formats must be compatible, and you cannot apply video filters on a stream-copy path. A playlist containing incompatible or varied files may need preparation or transcoding. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Transcoding: more work for an older machine
Transcoding means decoding a stream and encoding it again. FFmpeg describes it as computationally expensive in many cases and notes that it can reduce quality; its documentation recommends stream copy when possible. Scaling, frame-rate changes, overlays, or other filters also require processing rather than simple packet copying. See FFmpeg’s documentation.

Consequently, the same mini PC may handle one playlist easily and struggle with another. The codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, chosen output settings, FFmpeg build, and available encoder support all matter.
What to check before relying on it around the clock
Collect the details of the actual machine and stream first. “Old” and “mini PC” do not identify a usable performance threshold, and the available guidance does not establish a minimum model.

- Machine and software: identify the CPU, graphics hardware and supported encoders, operating system, FFmpeg build, and relevant drivers.
- Playlist: check the codecs, resolutions, and frame rates of the files. Decide whether they can be copied into a YouTube-compatible output as-is or need filters or transcoding.
- Output target: choose the intended YouTube resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Higher output settings can increase encoder demand and require more upload capacity.
- Internet connection: measure sustained upload capacity, not just download speed. The connection must support the selected bitrate with headroom and remain stable.
- Stream setup: confirm the YouTube stream URL and stream key are correct, and check that the channel is eligible to stream.
- Rights and observation: make sure you have rights to the material and arrange a way to monitor stream health and recover from failures.
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Its encoder setup guidance covers creating a live stream with an encoder.
Configure FFmpeg and YouTube for the intended stream
Use YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, which can change, rather than treating general video-upload settings as live-stream settings. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; CBR; AAC or MP3 audio; and keyframes every 2 seconds, not more than 4 seconds apart. Recommended bitrate depends on the codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table on that page for your specific target.

- Choose stream copy or encoding deliberately. Use copy only if the source streams and output container are compatible and you do not need filters. If files differ in ways the target cannot accept, prepare them to a common format or encode them.
- Set the ingest format. Match the selected video and audio codecs, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current recommendations for your resolution and frame rate. Do not assume a processor’s brand or integrated GPU guarantees that FFmpeg can use a hardware encoder.
- Set an achievable quality target. Pick a resolution and frame rate the machine can process in real time and the connection can upload steadily. Lowering either may reduce encoding demand and the required bitrate.
- Connect to YouTube Live. Use the ingest URL and stream key for the intended live stream in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or logs you share.
- Test and watch health. Test before the public stream, check FFmpeg’s reported processing speed, and watch YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube also advises continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
Hardware acceleration is not an automatic fix for weak performance. FFmpeg notes that availability depends on the build and drivers, some acceleration methods are primarily intended for playback, and transferring frames between processing stages can reduce performance. Its documentation says QSV accelerated transcoding requires decoder and encoder support and no filters in that path. Verify actual support and sustained performance on the machine rather than inferring it from the hardware label.
Run a sustained test before calling it 24/7-ready
A successful short preview proves only that the setup worked briefly. Before depending on an old PC unattended, test a representative stream with the real playlist and chosen output settings long enough to expose heat-related slowdown, file-boundary failures, network interruptions, and restart behavior. These are practical checks to perform; they are not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

- Run the playlist through the intended FFmpeg path, including any filters or transcoding the final setup will use.
- Confirm FFmpeg keeps processing in real time rather than falling behind, and check that audio and video continue across transitions between files.
- Watch YouTube stream health and confirm the upload connection remains stable at the selected bitrate.
- Observe the machine over an extended run for thermal slowdown, crashes, or other interruptions.
- Test what happens after a connection drop, FFmpeg exit, or PC restart. Confirm you can detect the failure and restore the stream, rather than assuming it will recover by itself.
Troubleshoot common failure patterns
FFmpeg falls behind or the stream stutters
The machine may not be encoding fast enough, especially if it is transcoding or applying filters. Check FFmpeg’s processing speed and the selected output workload. Try compatible stream copy, remove unnecessary filters, or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again.
The stream fails when the playlist changes files
Files may differ in codecs or other properties, or the output container may not support a required stream detail. Check compatibility at file boundaries. Prepare the playlist to consistent formats or use a transcoding path that the machine can sustain.

YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, and resolution against YouTube’s live recommendations. Also confirm the connection can sustain the selected upload bitrate; reducing the target resolution or frame rate may help if the machine or network is the constraint.
The stream stops after a network or software interruption
A local FFmpeg process depends on the PC and its connection continuing to run. Inspect the process and network, verify the stream URL and key, and test the restart procedure. A short successful test does not establish that the setup will recover unattended.
Hardware encoding is unavailable or does not improve performance
Check that the installed FFmpeg build, drivers, decoder, and encoder support the intended path. Filters or frame transfers can change the result, and advertised hardware capability alone does not establish sustained performance.
DIY mini PC or cloud streaming?
A local mini PC gives you direct control, but it makes the stream dependent on that computer, its cooling, power, software, and home upload connection. A hosted encoder shifts the processing away from your home machine but introduces a recurring service cost and reliance on the provider. Choose based on the actual playlist, required quality, tolerance for maintenance, and cost; no universal performance or price comparison follows from the hardware category alone.
