There is no dependable cross-site “accept cookies” selector: consent interfaces differ, so the interaction must be chosen for the site being captured. A browser JavaScript dialog is a separate case and needs different handling.
Use this workflow for a page-rendered cookie banner
The example below uses Playwright for Node.js and assumes you have installed the Playwright package and the browser it will launch. Replace the URL, consent button name, and readiness locator with values observed on the target site. The accessible name in the example is illustrative, not a universal selector.
- Navigate to the page.
- Inspect the visible consent UI and locate its actual accept control. If the control is inside a frame, inspect the frame and use a frame-aware locator; do not assume all banners use frames.
- Click the accept control only if that matches the user’s instruction.
- Assert that the consent interface is gone and the page content required for the screenshot is present.
- Capture the viewport or full page, as required.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Replace this with a locator derived from the site's visible consent UI.
const acceptButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all cookies' });
await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await acceptButton.click();
// Verify dismissal and wait for content that matters to this capture.
await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'hidden' });
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and page screenshots, including full-page capture. Locator-based screenshots and their actionability behavior are described in the Locator API.
Tell the AI agent what to inspect and verify
An AI agent should not guess a selector and treat a successful click call as proof of consent. Ask it to inspect the rendered interface, identify the control whose label and meaning match the requested action, click it, and check both that the consent UI is no longer visible and that the desired page content is present. If the control cannot be identified or acceptance fails, the agent should report that it could not capture the page after acceptance rather than hiding the banner or claiming success.
There is no generic cross-site solution because consent dialogs are implemented differently across websites, as a Playwright project member explained in a 2020 Playwright issue. Browserless’ example similarly uses custom selector logic because banners rarely share a standard attribute: Browserless cookie-consent example.
Distinguish a browser dialog from a webpage banner
A cookie banner is often ordinary page content: HTML rendered in the page, sometimes with an overlay. A JavaScript alert(), confirm(), prompt(), or beforeunload dialog is a browser-level dialog. A handler for JavaScript dialogs will not automatically accept a page-rendered cookie banner.
Playwright’s Dialog API explains that dialogs are automatically dismissed if no listener is registered. If a listener is registered, it must accept or dismiss the dialog; leaving it unresolved can stall page actions. Use a listener only when the page actually presents a browser-level dialog, and choose accept or dismiss according to the requested behavior.
Choose the consent action deliberately
If the user asked the agent to accept cookies, use the site’s accept action—not a reject, close, or preferences control. A close button may only hide a banner without recording a consent choice. If the site offers several acceptance choices, follow the user’s stated preference; do not infer consent beyond it.

After acceptance, wait for the particular content the screenshot must show. For example, check that a results heading appears, a known article element is visible, or a loading indicator has disappeared. Prefer a state assertion to an arbitrary delay when the page exposes a useful condition.

Playwright generally auto-waits for actions, and its Page API documents load-state waits. However, the documentation marks networkidle as discouraged for tests and recommends assertions to determine readiness. A page can continue making background requests after its useful content is ready, or become quiet before the content you need has rendered. Use networkidle only when that behavior is specifically appropriate to the page, not as a universal screenshot signal.
Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
- Viewport: omit
fullPageor set it tofalseto capture what is currently visible in the browser viewport. - Full page: set
fullPage: truewhen the capture should include the full document. Ensure the page has loaded the content you expect before capturing. - One element: use a locator screenshot when only a specific component matters. Playwright’s Locator API checks actionability and scrolls the element into view before capture; it also documents disabling animation for more stable element screenshots.
Keep the viewport and browser context consistent when repeatability matters. Different viewport dimensions can change responsive layouts and therefore the resulting image.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The accept locator times out | The label or role differs from the example, the banner has not appeared, or the control is in a frame. | Inspect the rendered page and accessible names, then derive a locator from the actual control. Check frames only when inspection indicates one is present. |
| The click completes but the banner remains | The locator may target a close or preferences control, the click may not have recorded acceptance, or the site may still be updating. | Verify the chosen action and wait for the consent UI to become hidden. If it remains, inspect the resulting page state instead of proceeding as if acceptance succeeded. |
| A page action stalls after a JavaScript dialog appears | A registered dialog listener has not accepted or dismissed it. | Handle the dialog explicitly with the Playwright Dialog API, following the requested action. |
| The screenshot is blank or misses the needed content | The capture ran before the relevant content appeared, or the wait condition checked only general load completion. | Wait for a specific content locator or state assertion before capture; do not assume network quiet guarantees visual readiness. |
| The screenshot still contains the consent overlay | The page-rendered consent control was not identified or dismissed. | Inspect the banner and use its actual site-specific control. Do not use a JavaScript dialog handler as a substitute for interacting with page UI. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can accept cookie and consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
One GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response handling.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
This is useful when you want consent overlays and popups removed without writing a site-specific browser interaction. It does not replace a user’s consent decision: if the task specifically requires accepting a site’s consent action, use the Playwright workflow above. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
