To move a 24/7 YouTube FFmpeg stream to DigitalOcean, first identify how the current encoder is configured, then either snapshot an existing DigitalOcean Droplet or rebuild and restore the service on a new Droplet if your VPS is elsewhere. Test the new encoder—including after a reboot—before switching over. Keep the original host available until YouTube confirms the destination stream is healthy; a migration does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Choose the right migration path

A snapshot-based move is usually the closer copy of an existing system. A clean rebuild can be easier to audit, but requires you to recreate dependencies, service configuration, and other system details. In either case, retain the old VPS while you validate the new one.
Inventory the running stream before changing anything
Record how the current stream is started and what it depends on. This is an operational checklist, not an FFmpeg-specific migration procedure published by DigitalOcean.
- The exact FFmpeg command, configuration files, installed FFmpeg version, and any scripts used to launch or supervise it.
- The input source, its location, and any credentials or environment variables FFmpeg needs to read it.
- The YouTube ingest endpoint and which stream key is configured. Treat the key like a password: do not place it in public notes, tickets, or unredacted logs.
- The service manager or supervisor, restart policy, boot behavior, and any health checks.
- Log locations, local media files, and other files the process needs.
- Any DNS records, dashboards, or external controls that point to the old VPS address.
Do not copy a stream key into a public command example or paste it into a shared log. If you suspect it was exposed during the move, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key: YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.

Prepare the DigitalOcean Droplet
Choose capacity from observed usage
There is no universal Droplet size established for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream. Use the current host’s CPU, memory, and sustained outbound bandwidth as a starting point, then monitor the destination under the actual encoding workload. Transcoding can demand more CPU than relaying an already encoded source; size for what your FFmpeg process really does rather than assuming all streams need the same plan.
Set up access and network controls
Before exposing the service, follow DigitalOcean’s setup guidance: use SSH key authentication, create a non-root user with sudo privileges, configure a cloud firewall, and enable monitoring and backups. See DigitalOcean’s recommended Droplet setup and DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls.

For an encoder sending video out to YouTube, the essential connection is generally outbound traffic from the Droplet. DigitalOcean’s recommended firewall baseline allows outbound traffic and restricts inbound access to SSH. If you have custom egress rules in the cloud firewall or operating system, verify they permit the outbound connection your selected YouTube ingest endpoint requires.
Move or restore the files and service
For a DigitalOcean-to-DigitalOcean move
- Take an on-demand snapshot of the source Droplet after confirming its files and configuration are in a state you can restore. A snapshot is a point-in-time disk image; changes made afterward are not included.
- Create a new Droplet from that snapshot, choosing the intended destination region and an appropriate size. DigitalOcean documents creating a Droplet from a snapshot, including in a different region, in its snapshot migration guide.
- Review the new Droplet’s access, firewall, monitoring, and backup configuration. Confirm its public address and any changed network references.
DigitalOcean says the destination filesystem data and organization should be identical to the original, but warns that expected services may not be configured to start automatically. A copied disk is not proof that the stream service is running correctly.

For a VPS hosted elsewhere
- Check the source provider’s export options and DigitalOcean’s current image-import support for the specific operating system and disk format. Do not assume an arbitrary VPS image can be imported directly.
- If image import is unavailable or unsuitable, create a clean Droplet and install the required operating system packages, FFmpeg, scripts, media, and service configuration.
- Transfer files securely and restore configuration carefully. Keep credentials, especially the YouTube stream key, out of world-readable files and logs.
- Compare the restored service with your inventory, including file paths, environment variables, input access, logs, and restart behavior.
How much you can preserve depends on the source host and its image format. The documented DigitalOcean snapshot workflow should not be treated as a general external-VPS migration service.
Validate FFmpeg and YouTube before cutover
Check the encoder settings
Use the settings appropriate to your codec, resolution, frame rate, and available network capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its current H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps; those figures are specific to that format and frame rate, not a universal setting. Consult YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the settings matching your stream.

Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest option when configuring the destination, and confirm the endpoint and stream key match the intended live event. Avoid including the key in screenshots or diagnostic output.
Test the process and restart behavior
- Start FFmpeg on the destination using the restored service configuration. Confirm it can read the input, resolve and reach the ingest endpoint, and authenticate with the intended stream key.
- Inspect service status and logs for repeated restarts, input errors, authentication failures, or connection problems. Protect logs if they might contain sensitive values.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for the correct event and a healthy incoming stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and watching stream health and messages during the event.
- Reboot the destination Droplet during a safe test window. Confirm the service starts as intended and that FFmpeg reconnects if the process or network connection drops.
The reboot test matters because DigitalOcean notes that services on a snapshot-created Droplet may not be configured to start at boot. Configure the service manager or supervisor according to your operating system and deployment rather than assuming the old host’s behavior carries over.

Cut over while keeping a rollback option
- Choose a maintenance window and decide how to avoid having two encoders send to the same YouTube live event unintentionally. Coordinate the old and new processes; cloud migration itself does not guarantee a seamless handoff.
- Start and validate the destination encoder, then confirm the correct event is receiving a healthy stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Update DNS or other references if they point to the old server’s public IP address. Allow for DNS caching where applicable.
- Watch the destination process, logs, and YouTube stream health during the verification window. Keep the original host and, where applicable, its snapshot available until you are satisfied with the new stream.
- If the destination fails, stop it from sending to the event and restore service on the original host. Retaining the source makes rollback more practical; it does not remove the need to verify which encoder is active.
DigitalOcean recommends retaining the original Droplet and snapshots during testing and updating DNS when a domain pointed to the old Droplet. See its migration guidance.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
