When you need lower-level Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) access, create a session with page.createCDPSession() and send protocol commands through it. For most page screenshots, the higher-level Puppeteer method is simpler.
Capture a website page with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then run this ES module. The networkidle2 navigation condition is the choice used in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide; it is not a guarantee that every site’s client-rendered content, animations, or delayed assets have finished.

}Save the code as an .mjs file and run it with Node.js in a project where puppeteer is installed. The example uses Puppeteer’s default browser launch behavior. Puppeteer identifies its bundled browser as the supported baseline; using an independently installed Chrome is not guaranteed to be compatible. See the launch options reference.
Wait for the content your page actually needs
Navigation completion and visual readiness are separate concerns. A page may populate content after navigation, or keep network activity open through analytics or long polling. If a specific element is the signal that the desired content is ready, wait for it before capturing:

Choose the capture area and output
Pick the capture scope first. The screenshot options below are documented in Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference, shown as version 25.12.0 in the consulted documentation. Defaults can change between releases.

Capture an entire page

Capture a region

});The clip rectangle is expressed in page screenshot coordinates. Ensure its dimensions and position match the intended capture; use the documented captureBeyondViewport option when you need to control capture outside the viewport.
Capture a selected element

It throws if the element has detached from the DOM, so pages that replace elements dynamically may require waiting for the final element before taking the screenshot. See ElementHandle.screenshot().
Save a file or use the returned image data
Setting path writes the screenshot to disk. Puppeteer infers the image type from the filename extension; a relative path is resolved from the current working directory. Without path, page.screenshot() returns image data instead of saving a file: a Uint8Array with the default binary encoding, or a string when encoding: 'base64' is set.

For example, a JPEG file can be requested with await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 80 });. Choose a quality appropriate to the image; the cited API reference does not establish a universally best setting.
Use Chrome DevTools Protocol through Puppeteer
Puppeteer exposes a CDP session attached to a page with page.createCDPSession(). The session’s send() method is the documented route for protocol calls, and the session can subscribe to protocol events. For ordinary captures, page.screenshot() already provides the capture workflow and options described above.

- The screenshot is blank or missing content: navigation may have completed before client-rendered content appeared. Wait for a meaningful selector or other page-specific readiness condition before capturing.
- The capture is cut off: default screenshots cover the viewport. Use
fullPage: truefor a full-page request, or select an appropriate clip or element capture. - The element screenshot throws: the element may not have appeared yet or may have been replaced and detached. Wait for the final selector and capture the live handle.
- The image is not written to disk: check that the screenshot options include
path. Without it, consume the returned binary data or request base64 encoding. - The file format is unexpected: inspect the filename extension and the
typeoption. Puppeteer can infer type from the extension when saving a path, and PNG is the default when type is not specified. - Installed Chrome behaves differently: use Puppeteer’s bundled browser to stay with its supported baseline; compatibility with a separately installed browser is not guaranteed.
- Another page operation waits during capture: Puppeteer documents that, within a
BrowserContext, creating a new page throughBrowserContext.newPage()orBrowser.newPage(), and callingPage.close(), wait for an in-progress screenshot.Page.bringToFront()does not wait for screenshot work.
Practical reliability and cost considerations
Puppeteer’s documented workflow runs a browser and captures a page locally or in the environment where your script executes. The references cited here do not provide performance benchmarks, reliability guarantees, or a cost comparison, so actual runtime and infrastructure costs depend on your browser environment, target pages, and workload. For repeatable captures, keep the Puppeteer version and its bundled browser aligned, select an explicit output path or data-handling approach, and wait for the content that matters to your task.

Can I use Puppeteer to save a screenshot as a base64 string?
Yes. Set encoding: 'base64' in the screenshot options; the returned value is a string rather than the default binary Uint8Array.
Does the CDP session replace Puppeteer’s page screenshot method?
No. A CDP session provides direct protocol access through send() and event subscriptions. Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() remains the documented high-level capture method.
