Sign in within the same browser session you will use to capture the page, wait until the iframe’s private content is ready, then take a screenshot of the rendered page or a visible element. Use an iframe-aware locator only when you need to inspect or interact with content inside the frame; a visual screenshot does not require copying the iframe’s DOM. The steps below use Playwright and assume you are authorized to access the page.
What changes when the private content is in an iframe?
An iframe is a separate document embedded in the page. If it is cross-origin, normal page JavaScript cannot directly read its document because of the browser’s same-origin security rules. That does not prevent a browser screenshot from capturing pixels the browser has rendered. Playwright provides frame-targeting APIs for selecting content inside an iframe, and separate page and element screenshot APIs for capturing it. Authentication is the important prerequisite: the browser context taking the screenshot must have access to the protected content. A login to the host page might not sign you into the embedded service. The iframe can have a separate identity provider, session cookies, or embedding restrictions, so confirm what the frame actually displays before relying on the image.
Take the screenshot with Playwright
The example below shows the API shape for JavaScript. Replace the URL, iframe selector, and readiness condition with values specific to the site. It assumes a Playwright page has already been created and authenticated through an authorized flow. It is illustrative, not a tested script.

- Complete sign-in in the browser context. Use the site’s normal login flow or load authentication state you are authorized to reuse.
- Navigate to the private page. Wait for redirects or other login steps to finish.
- Wait for meaningful content inside the iframe. A top-level page load does not prove that a client-rendered frame has finished loading.
- Capture the rendered page. Choose viewport or full-page output according to where the content appears.
- Inspect the output. Make sure it shows the intended authenticated content rather than a login prompt, loading state, blocked-frame message, or stale information.

Capture only a visible region
If the page contains clutter outside the content you need, target a stable visible element instead of saving the whole page. The target must be present and visible; choose a locator that identifies the intended content rather than a fragile position or generated class.

Reuse authorized authentication state carefully
Playwright supports saving browser authentication state for reuse. Treat the state file as a credential: keep it out of source control and limit who or what can read it. Sessions can expire, and SSO, MFA, account policy, or site-specific bot controls may require a fresh interactive login. See Playwright authentication.
Choose the right capture method

For an ordinary automated screenshot, start with Playwright’s page or element screenshot API. Do not use the in-page Screen Capture API merely to work around cross-origin iframe access.

Troubleshoot common failures
The screenshot shows a login screen
Confirm that the session is valid in the exact browser context used for capture and that login redirects have completed. Then check whether the embedded service requires its own authentication; a successful host-page login does not establish that the iframe is signed in.
The frame locator times out
Check that the iframe selector matches the current page and that the frame has attached. Wait for a specific element inside the frame rather than assuming the parent page’s load event means the frame is ready. If the content is nested, identify the appropriate frame context.

The screenshot misses the content
Check whether the content is below the visible viewport, inside a nested frame, or still loading. Try full-page capture for below-the-fold content, or wait for a meaningful in-frame element before capture. Confirm the saved image rather than assuming navigation completed successfully.
The embedded site refuses to load
The host page or embedded service may restrict framing through policies such as frame-ancestors or X-Frame-Options, or the failure may involve cookies or origin restrictions. The behavior is site-specific; check the embedded service’s documentation or ask its administrator. A screenshot tool cannot override a site’s authorization or embedding policy.
In-page screen capture is denied
If code inside the iframe uses the Screen Capture API, check whether the page’s Permissions Policy permits display-capture and whether the iframe’s allow configuration grants it. This permission issue is separate from Playwright’s page screenshot API. See MDN’s display-capture policy reference.

Security and reliability checks
- Capture only pages and accounts you are authorized to access.
- Protect saved authentication state like a password or session token; do not commit it to a repository or expose it in logs.
- Build a site-specific readiness check around meaningful content, not a generic delay alone. The correct condition depends on the application.
- After capture, verify the image contains the expected private content and is not a login, error, or loading screen.
- Re-authenticate when a session expires or site policy requires a new login; do not assume saved state remains valid indefinitely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright screenshot a cross-origin iframe?
Yes, a page screenshot can capture rendered pixels visible in the browser. Cross-origin restrictions affect direct DOM access; use Playwright’s frame APIs to target iframe content when needed.
Does a full-page screenshot include content inside an iframe?
It can capture rendered iframe content in the page, but the content must have loaded and be visible as intended. Verify the resulting image, especially with nested or dynamically sized frames.
Will logging in to the main site also log in to the iframe?
Not necessarily. The embedded service may require its own login, cookies, or identity provider.
