No—not as a YouTube DVR backend. AWS Elemental MediaPackage provides time-shifted playback from a MediaPackage endpoint, while YouTube Live DVR is a separate setting for viewers watching on YouTube. To give YouTube viewers pause and rewind, configure DVR in YouTube Studio; a MediaPackage startover window applies only to playback delivered from MediaPackage.
MediaPackage time shifting and YouTube DVR are separate features
MediaPackage receives a live feed from an upstream encoder, retains received content for a limited period, and dynamically packages it for a downstream player or CDN. YouTube uses a different ingest workflow: an encoder sends a feed to YouTube using a configured stream URL and stream key. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS and also documents HLS ingest with its own URL and settings. YouTube live encoder settings Set up a live stream with an encoder
Those roles do not make MediaPackage’s retained content or endpoint window part of YouTube’s rewind history. The official documentation describes MediaPackage time shifting for its own playback endpoint, not as a YouTube playback origin or DVR control. A custom relay or multi-destination design may be built separately, but the documented MediaPackage setting alone does not enable YouTube DVR.

For YouTube playback, follow YouTube’s DVR controls. For a MediaPackage-delivered player experience, follow the relevant MediaPackage endpoint documentation. The two settings govern different playback destinations.
What MediaPackage’s time-shift limits mean
AWS documentation checked on October 3, 2026, states that MediaPackage v2 time-shifted viewing can serve content up to 336 hours old. That figure describes how old the content may be; it does not mean a viewer can request a single manifest spanning 14 days. The legacy MediaPackage guide describes requesting content within an endpoint’s configured startover window with start and end parameters. A request outside that window returns HTTP 404. How to enable DVR for an always-on YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the live stream or schedule the stream you intend to run.
- Enable DVR in the stream’s settings. This is the control that governs pause, rewind, and resume for viewers on YouTube; a MediaPackage endpoint setting does not replace it. YouTube’s current guidance identifies the feature and its behavior, but does not establish a universal UI label sequence for every Studio layout. YouTube Live DVR guidance
- Send the encoder feed to YouTube. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS generally and provides separate HLS ingest instructions for supported workflows. YouTube encoder settings YouTube encoder setup
- Check the viewer experience on YouTube. Confirm viewers can pause and seek within the live portion. YouTube warns that DVR can be limited or unavailable when a live stream runs longer than 12 hours, so do not promise uninterrupted rewind for a continuous always-on broadcast. Common points of confusion
- “MediaPackage supports time shifting, so YouTube gets that history.” No. MediaPackage’s window applies when a player requests playback from a MediaPackage endpoint. YouTube DVR applies to viewers on the YouTube stream.
- “Fourteen days old means fourteen days of rewind.” No. The 336-hour content-age limit is separate from the 24-hour maximum startover window and 24-hour maximum manifest length for MediaPackage v2.
- “A 24/7 YouTube stream always has DVR.” YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, and seeking before the stream’s start is not supported.
- “Changing the encoder or MediaPackage endpoint automatically changes YouTube DVR.” The documented workflows assign YouTube ingest and DVR to YouTube, and MediaPackage endpoint playback and time shifting to AWS. Treat any custom relay or multi-destination setup as a separate architecture that must be validated independently.
Copyright and continuous-stream considerations
DVR is a playback control, not permission to rebroadcast material. Before running an always-on channel, confirm you have rights for the video and audio and that your stream complies with YouTube’s rules.
