A Raspberry Pi cannot tell from a hardware-watchdog setting alone whether FFmpeg is still delivering a healthy YouTube stream. Use separate recovery layers: configure FFmpeg reconnects for the errors its protocol supports, run FFmpeg under a service manager so it restarts if it exits, and add a health monitor for a process that is alive but making no streaming progress. If that monitor detects a defined stall, it can restart FFmpeg or, if a full reset is specifically required, request a Pi reboot.

Choose the recovery action for the failure

“The stream hangs” can describe different faults. Match the signal to the remedy rather than treating every problem as a reason to reboot the whole Pi.

Recovery layer What it can detect or handle What it does not establish
FFmpeg reconnect options Specified disconnect, EOF, network, or selected HTTP errors, depending on protocol and options That output is advancing or YouTube is displaying a healthy live stream
Service restart policy FFmpeg exiting; a separate monitor can also ask the service manager to restart it after a progress timeout A still-running process that is stalled, unless a monitor checks it
Progress health monitor A condition you explicitly define, such as no progress output for longer than an appropriate deadline That its chosen signal always matches YouTube-side health
Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog The operating system failing to service the watchdog FFmpeg or YouTube stream health
Monitor-triggered full reboot Whatever failure condition the monitor checks That rebooting is necessary or will fix a persistent input, network, or configuration problem

Prefer the least disruptive recovery that fits the fault: let FFmpeg retry a supported connection error, restart the streaming service for a process failure, and reserve a full reboot for a policy that explicitly calls for it or evidence that the device itself is unhealthy.

Set up the streaming process in layers

1. Put FFmpeg under a service manager

Configure the exact FFmpeg command that you already use as a service that starts at boot and can be restarted if the process exits. A Raspberry Pi forum post illustrates a YouTube streaming service using Restart=always alongside a separate watchdog service. Treat that as an anecdotal example, not a universal unit file or proof that a restart policy detects a process that remains alive but stuck: Raspberry Pi Forums example.

The service should use the correct command, paths, user, and environment for your installation. Keep the YouTube stream key out of public scripts, logs, and shared unit files. A service restart policy addresses process exit; it does not on its own assess stream progress.

2. Configure FFmpeg reconnects only for applicable errors

FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with retry and delay controls such as reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_max, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Which options apply depends on the input or output protocol. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and build before adding them to a command; do not copy an option merely because it appears in an example: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Reconnect flags can help with the documented classes of connection or protocol error. They are not a general-purpose check that an output stream is progressing or that YouTube is receiving and displaying it properly.

3. Define meaningful progress and a timeout

A monitor needs an observable signal. Configure FFmpeg to emit progress information that the monitor can evaluate, then decide what counts as progress for your workload—for example, advancing output time or encoded-frame activity. Set the deadline long enough to tolerate normal network jitter and any expected quiet periods. A quiet log is not evidence of a hang unless the command is configured to produce regular, useful progress output.

There is no reliable universal timeout or ready-made health-check script for every camera, FFmpeg command, Raspberry Pi model, and YouTube stream. A monitor that only checks whether the FFmpeg process exists will miss the central failure case: the process can remain alive while streaming has stalled. Nor does local progress alone prove that YouTube is showing a healthy live stream; include a YouTube-side check in your operational verification.

4. Decide whether a missed deadline restarts FFmpeg or reboots the Pi

For a missed progress deadline, a service restart is usually the narrower recovery: it restarts the streaming software without resetting the whole device. If you specifically require a full reboot, have the monitor request a privileged reboot action, such as sudo reboot. Raspberry Pi lists that as a command-line reboot action in its getting-started documentation: Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Automation permissions, service ordering, and how the reboot action is invoked depend on the operating system and your setup. Configure them deliberately; do not give a monitor broader privileges than it needs. Add a cooldown or failure limit so a persistent camera, network, or configuration problem cannot cause an endless restart or reboot loop. These are design safeguards, not settings validated for a particular deployment.

Configure the Pi hardware watchdog separately

The hardware watchdog is a system-level recovery mechanism, not an FFmpeg monitor. Raspberry Pi’s rolling boot configuration documentation says a nonzero kernel_watchdog_timeout enables a hardware watchdog timer passed to the operating system at boot. If the OS does not regularly service it, the device resets after the timeout; ongoing servicing is typically controlled by systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec. The same documentation notes that Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm does not enable RuntimeWatchdogSec by default and that it must be configured in /etc/systemd/system.conf before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used. Model, OS release, firmware, and kernel handover matter, so follow the instructions for your specific system rather than applying a generic setting: Raspberry Pi boot configuration documentation.

Test the recovery before relying on it

  1. Record the setup: note the Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, FFmpeg version and build, the exact service command, and the progress signal your monitor checks.
  2. Test process-exit handling: during a controlled maintenance window, stop the FFmpeg service and confirm that the service manager behaves as configured. Review service logs.
  3. Test the progress monitor: simulate a missed-progress condition safely and confirm it takes only the intended action, including any cooldown or failure limit.
  4. Verify the stream: check both local service and monitor logs and the actual YouTube-side result. A local process or progress signal is not a substitute for confirming the live output.
  5. Test OS watchdog behavior separately: only follow model- and OS-appropriate instructions in a controlled setup. Do not treat a working hardware watchdog as proof that application-level stream monitoring works.

Do not deploy a generic copy-and-paste watchdog configuration without knowing the Pi model, OS release, FFmpeg command, and definition of healthy progress. Protect stream keys and other credentials throughout setup and testing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream without maintaining a Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg process at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection do not need to keep the stream running.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists, and support.
