There is no single MediaPackage HLS preset for every 24/7 YouTube channel. Match MediaPackage’s output segments to its input cadence, set the manifest window for the playback lookback you actually need, and configure YouTube’s ingest protocol, URL, and stream key on the sending component—not on the MediaPackage viewer playback URL. The right fields and limits depend on whether you use classic MediaPackage or MediaPackage v2.

Separate MediaPackage packaging from YouTube ingestion

MediaPackage packages live content into HLS for delivery. YouTube ingestion is a separate handoff: an encoder or other sending component must send to the YouTube ingest destination using the selected protocol and stream key. A MediaPackage origin endpoint or playback URL is not, by itself, YouTube’s ingest destination. AWS explains the packaging and endpoint configuration in its MediaPackage v2 origin endpoint guide; YouTube’s instructions separately describe an HLS stream URL and HLS stream key.

Before changing settings, identify which MediaPackage generation, endpoint type, input format, and segment cadence your pipeline uses. Classic MediaPackage and MediaPackage v2 expose different fields and limits; do not copy a setting name or assumed limit from one into the other without checking the deployed service and API.

Choose the MediaPackage HLS settings

Segment duration: align output with the input

Set the output segment duration to match the input segment duration, or to a multiple of it. AWS says that when the configured duration differs, MediaPackage rounds output segments to the nearest multiple of the input segment duration. That means a requested value is not necessarily the segment length you will see in the manifest. Coordinate the setting with the encoder or upstream ingest cadence, then inspect actual manifests and playback. Classic HLS fields are documented in AWS’s classic packager settings guide; v2 has its own segment setting in the v2 endpoint guide.

Do not treat a particular segment duration as a universal YouTube requirement. The appropriate target depends on the input cadence, selected ingest route, and latency and playback needs.

Manifest window: set a rolling lookback, not a channel runtime

The live playlist or manifest window controls how much recent content is represented in the rolling manifest. It does not determine whether the channel runs for 24 hours or continuously. For MediaPackage v2, AWS documents a maximum manifest window of 900 seconds (15 minutes). The classic guide exposes a live playlist window field, but the cited documentation does not establish that the same numeric maximum applies to classic MediaPackage.

Choose the window based on the recent playback lookback you need and the behavior of the player or receiving workflow. Do not set it to a day just because the channel is intended to run all day. Check the available field and permitted range for the actual MediaPackage generation and endpoint you deploy.

Program date and time tags: optional except for the documented v2 LL-HLS case

MediaPackage v2 can insert EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME tags, associating segments with wall-clock time. Consider enabling them when the workflow needs a wall-clock timeline or seek presentation. They are optional for ordinary HLS; AWS says they are required for low-latency HLS in its v2 guidance.

Manifest name and final path

In MediaPackage v2, the HLS manifest name is appended to the origin endpoint path, and MediaPackage adds an extension such as .m3u8. The HLS manifest name can override the origin endpoint’s name. Make sure the final path used by the receiving sender matches the configured manifest. The API fields are described in AWS’s CreateHlsManifestConfiguration reference.

Startover is separate from the live manifest window

MediaPackage v2 has a separate startover window for time-shifted viewing. AWS documents a maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days) for that window. Enable or size it only if viewers need startover or catch-up playback; it is not the setting that keeps a live channel running. The manifest window and startover behavior are described separately in the v2 endpoint guide.

Choose and configure YouTube’s ingest path

RTMPS or HLS: configure the sender for the selected protocol

YouTube recommends RTMPS generally and also documents HLS ingestion. The appropriate choice depends on what the sending component supports, codec requirements, stream key configuration, and how the operations team will test and monitor the feed. The protocol used for YouTube ingestion is not a MediaPackage manifest setting.

For YouTube HLS, create or select a stream key configured for HLS, then configure an HLS-capable sender with the resulting HTTPS stream URL and key. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s HLS setup guide. For the general encoder workflow and stream URL/key management, consult YouTube’s encoder settings guide and live stream settings help.

Keep the two URLs straight: a MediaPackage manifest URL is for HLS playback/delivery; the YouTube ingestion URL is where the sending encoder transmits. Do not paste the MediaPackage playback URL into the YouTube destination field unless a separately designed and documented sender workflow specifically calls for it.

Check codec and encoder settings end to end

AWS documents HLS live output combinations that include H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. That establishes MediaPackage support, not compatibility with every YouTube ingestion configuration. Confirm the selected YouTube protocol, sender, codec, and audio format together before production; the YouTube encoder settings page lists protocol- and resolution-specific recommendations.

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds for the described encoder settings. Treat that as encoder guidance for the applicable workflow, not a MediaPackage segment-duration value. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the chosen codec and resolution rather than applying one bitrate across all outputs.

Build and verify the 24/7 chain

  1. Identify the deployed MediaPackage version and endpoint type. Use the corresponding classic or v2 documentation and verify available field names and limits in the console or API actually deployed.
  2. Confirm the input segment cadence. Record the upstream segment duration, then set MediaPackage output duration to match it or a multiple. Remember that MediaPackage rounds mismatches to source-aligned multiples.
  3. Set a suitable rolling manifest window. Decide how much recent playback the manifest should expose. For v2, keep within AWS’s 900-second maximum; do not confuse that window with continuous runtime.
  4. Configure optional timeline and recovery-viewing behavior only when needed. Use program date/time tags for wall-clock timeline needs, and configure startover separately if catch-up viewing is required.
  5. Configure the actual sender for YouTube. Choose RTMPS or HLS based on sender support and workflow. For HLS, use the YouTube HLS stream URL and HLS stream key on the sending component.
  6. Run a representative test before production. Include audio and motion, inspect the generated manifest and playback, and verify that YouTube receives the intended stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health messages; see its encoder settings guidance.
  7. Plan the archive workflow independently. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish a single uninterrupted archive guarantee for a stream exceeding 12 hours, so verify the current behavior and decide whether scheduled events, restarts, or another archive process are required. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream guide.

Common problems and what to check

  • MediaPackage playback works, but YouTube receives nothing: the playback manifest is not the YouTube ingest destination. Check the sender’s configured YouTube ingestion URL, protocol, and stream key.
  • Manifest segments differ from the configured duration: compare the requested output duration with the input cadence. AWS rounds a mismatched duration to the nearest multiple of the input segment duration.
  • The playlist does not show a full day of content: a rolling manifest window is a recent playback lookback, not a channel-lifetime setting. For v2, the documented maximum is 900 seconds.
  • The manifest exists, but YouTube rejects or fails to decode the feed: a valid AWS manifest does not prove end-to-end compatibility. Verify the chosen YouTube ingest protocol, stream key, sender format, and codec combination.
  • The manifest path returns the wrong resource: for v2, check how the manifest name is appended to the endpoint path and whether the expected extension is present.
  • Wall-clock seeking is absent: if the workflow depends on timeline display or seeking, check whether v2 program date/time tags are enabled. They are optional for ordinary HLS.
  • The live feed runs longer than the archived replay: do not assume one uninterrupted archive for a stream exceeding 12 hours. Verify YouTube’s current archive behavior and use an archive strategy suited to the required duration.

When a cloud video loop is a simpler fit

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than to package an existing live contribution through AWS MediaPackage, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it keeps the uploaded video playing from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your video or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, then start the free first day.

Copyright and continuous-channel checks

  • Use only videos and audio you have the rights or permissions to stream. A technically valid HLS feed does not establish that the content is cleared for YouTube.
  • Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream, copyright, and monetization requirements for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
  • If the stream is made from prerecorded material, ensure the playlist and presentation provide the channel’s intended value; do not assume that looping content is automatically eligible for monetization.
  • Keep an operational plan for interruptions, stream health alerts, long-running archive needs, and any scheduled event or restart behavior.
