On Windows 11, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never (or longer than the planned broadcast), check hibernation and laptop lid or power-button actions, and let the screen turn off separately if you want. These changes keep the computer awake, but they do not guarantee an interruption-proof stream or preserve a complete YouTube archive.
Keep a Windows 11 computer awake while OBS is streaming
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the plugged-in power settings, set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a timeout that extends comfortably beyond the planned broadcast.
- Review the hibernate timeout controls if they are available on your device. A sleep timeout and a hibernate timeout are separate settings; check both rather than assuming one controls the other.
- Set Turn my screen off after separately. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake and OBS continues running.
- Keep the computer on reliable AC power for a long broadcast. Check any device-specific energy-saving or manufacturer power-management policy that might override Windows settings.
These menu labels and steps are for Windows 11. Available options can differ by device or managed installation. Microsoft explains the Windows 11 power controls in its power settings guide and describes the differences among shutdown, sleep, and hibernate in its Windows power-state guide.
Check a laptop’s lid and power-button behavior
Changing the sleep timeout may not be enough if closing the lid or pressing the power button is configured to put the laptop to sleep or hibernate. Check those actions in the device’s power settings, and leave the lid open if you have not confirmed that closing it will keep the computer awake. Microsoft notes that many laptops and tablets sleep when the lid closes or the power button is pressed, depending on the configuration.
Understand what these settings do—and do not do
Windows power settings control whether the host computer sleeps or hibernates. OBS and YouTube stream settings do not override the operating system’s power state. YouTube’s encoder settings include stream auto-start and auto-stop, but those settings govern stream lifecycle behavior, not whether the computer stays awake; see Manage live stream settings.

A computer that stays awake can still lose its stream because of a software, hardware, power, or network problem. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to choose settings for your hardware, then test the setup under the workload you expect; see OBS System Requirements. YouTube also advises testing, previewing the feed, arranging a backup encoder, and checking local archive files in its streaming tips.
Protect the recording separately from the live broadcast
A 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold: YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is a warning about the archive, not a claim that YouTube automatically ends a live stream at 12 hours. If preserving the broadcast matters, test a local recording workflow and confirm that recordings are being saved where you expect. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup in its archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops unexpectedly
- The computer sleeps even though the screen is off: Check Make my device sleep after for the plugged-in state. Screen-off and system-sleep timeouts are independent.
- The stream stops after you close the lid or press the power button: Review the configured lid-close and power-button actions. A timeout setting does not necessarily change those actions.
- The computer stays awake but OBS disconnects: Power settings only prevent sleep or hibernation. Test OBS with the intended workload, preview the YouTube feed, and prepare a backup encoder if continuity is important.
- The broadcast is live but no complete YouTube archive appears: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use and test a local recording as a separate backup.
- A setting is missing or does not seem to stick: Device configuration, a managed Windows installation, or manufacturer power-management software may affect available choices. Verify the active plugged-in settings and any applicable device policy.
