If your YouTube live stream keeps disconnecting while a Windows PC uses an Indian mobile hotspot, first find out whether the encoder is failing or the phone-to-network upload is unstable. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages, compare repeated upload tests at the broadcast location and time with the stream’s total bitrate, then lower the stream’s resolution or bitrate and rehearse unlisted. A download-speed result alone cannot show whether your connection can sustain a live upload.
1. Identify what disconnects
Before changing settings, note the time of each interruption. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and check its stream-health messages. YouTube’s Live Dashboard/Live Control Room checks the stream sent to YouTube and displays timestamped errors; red messages are critical and yellow messages are moderate. Use the messages and their timing to see whether the encoder stopped sending, YouTube reported an ingestion problem, or the stream stayed healthy while a viewer had playback trouble. 2. Separate encoder problems from upload problems
Check the encoder’s local preview and, if available, a local recording. Confirm that the picture and sound are healthy, update the encoder, and look at CPU load and encoder errors around the time of a drop. A healthy local preview or recording alongside a broken stream received by YouTube points toward the outbound connection; poor local output, high CPU load, or encoder errors instead point toward the source, encoder, or PC workload. This is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee: more than one fault can occur at once. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting steps if the local output is also failing.
If the encoder is sending normally but the incoming stream breaks, treat the network path as a likely area to test. In this setup, the mobile operator provides the cellular internet connection; that does not establish that a particular Indian carrier is at fault.

3. Measure upload where and when you stream
Run repeated upload-speed tests from the place where the PC and hotspot will be used, ideally at the hours you plan to broadcast. Compare the stable upload capacity with the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate—not the download figure. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of outbound bandwidth unused beyond the stream’s total bitrate. For example, a stream sending 6 Mbps needs about 7.5 Mbps of available upload capacity to leave that headroom (6 Mbps ÷ 0.8); this is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of stability.
If you send a backup stream as well, include its bitrate when checking whether the connection has sufficient capacity. Cellular upload can vary, so a single speed test is not proof that the connection will hold throughout a live event. 4. Lower bitrate or video demand to match the connection
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists the following recommended video bitrates and minimum recommendations. These are platform recommendations, not independently measured guarantees. The minimum figure does not promise a stable stream on a variable mobile connection.

These video figures do not include audio or other outgoing traffic. If your upload cannot sustain the selected setting with YouTube’s recommended headroom, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until it can. Prefer a setting the connection can maintain over a higher-quality setting that repeatedly drops. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings also call for constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Check the encoder’s own controls for these settings, since labels vary by program.

5. Rehearse before going public
- Set the encoder to the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, constant-bitrate mode, and keyframe interval you intend to use.
- Start an unlisted YouTube stream early enough to observe it, rather than testing only a static preview.
- Use representative motion and audio; a quiet or still scene may not reveal problems that occur during the actual program.
- Watch the local preview and Live Control Room stream health together. Note the time and exact message if the stream degrades or drops.
- If you use backup encoding, verify that failover works during the rehearsal.
YouTube recommends testing the stream before an event and monitoring its health. A rehearsal is more useful when it runs under conditions similar to the real broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
6. Compare with separate wired broadband, if available
YouTube Help recommends an Ethernet cable for computer streaming. If you have broadband independent of the phone hotspot, connect the PC to that router by Ethernet and repeat the same unlisted test. If it behaves better, that implicates the hotspot or cellular route as a difference, but it does not identify the exact cause.

An Ethernet cable between the PC and a phone hotspot does not fix the phone’s cellular link to its mobile network. If the hotspot is your only internet connection, Ethernet is not a cure for a weak or variable cellular upload. YouTube’s network guidance recommends Ethernet for computer streams, while also warning that network disruptions can break a stream.

- Download speed looks good, but the stream drops: test upload repeatedly at the broadcast location and time; download performance does not establish sustained upload capacity.
- Local preview or recording is also broken: inspect the source, encoder errors, CPU load, and encoder updates before assuming the hotspot is responsible.
- Local output is healthy but Live Control Room reports errors: correlate the timestamped message with the disconnect and test the outbound connection and bitrate headroom.
- The stream works on separate wired broadband but not the hotspot: the changed network path is relevant, but the comparison does not prove whether signal, local congestion, carrier conditions, or another factor is responsible.
- Lower settings still do not resolve it: repeat the unlisted test and measurements at the actual broadcast time. The available guidance does not establish a universal Windows adapter setting, Indian carrier fix, or signal accessory that will solve every hotspot disconnect.
