Eligibility depends on your AWS account’s creation date, offer status, instance type, and usage. Storage, data transfer, CPU-credit charges, and other parts of your configuration may also affect the bill. Check the offer and billing details for your own account before leaving a stream running.
What “EC2 Free Tier” means for an always-on stream
EC2 supplies a virtual server; a streaming encoder running on that server sends video to YouTube. These are separate questions: whether the server can stream, and whether AWS covers its cost. The answer to the first is yes. The answer to the second depends on the account and the complete setup.
A free compute allowance does not automatically make every resource needed for continuous streaming free. AWS says usage beyond applicable limits can be billed, and its Free Tier offers vary by account and plan. Check the account’s current offer and billing view rather than treating the phrase “Free Tier” as a promise of a zero-cost 24/7 service. Which AWS offer might cover the instance?
AWS documents different EC2 Free Tier terms for accounts created before July 15, 2025 and accounts created on or after that date. It also describes a separate t4g.small trial. These offers have different eligibility conditions and should not be combined into a blanket claim that any EC2 instance is free.

The t4g.small allowance is stated as aggregate monthly hours, not a separate allowance for each Region. Since the terms are time-sensitive, check the current offer in the AWS account before deployment.
How to send a stream from EC2 to YouTube
At a high level, the setup is an EC2 host running an encoder, connected to a YouTube Live stream using its stream key. AWS provides the compute environment; YouTube provides the destination and its encoder requirements. The sources do not benchmark a particular EC2 type against a specific codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder, so validate your actual workload rather than assuming a small eligible instance can encode it continuously.

- Check the account and estimate the configuration. In AWS, verify the account’s Free Tier cohort, offer status, eligible instance type, Region, remaining credits or hours, and billing view. Include the full configuration in your cost check, not only the instance.
- Choose a stream output. Decide the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate ranges, and resolutions; bitrate recommendations vary by output settings, so there is no single correct bitrate for every stream.
- Prepare the YouTube Live destination. Create or configure the live stream in YouTube and use its stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a public script or screenshot.
- Run and validate the encoder on EC2. Start the encoder with the selected media source and YouTube ingest settings. Confirm that YouTube receives a healthy signal and that the video, audio, resolution, and frame rate are as intended before relying on it unattended.
- Test continuity and monitor billing. Check that the process remains active and that the stream stays connected, then review AWS usage and charges while it runs. A compute allowance does not establish that every part of the deployment is free.
Use only video and audio you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. The AWS and YouTube encoder sources cited here do not establish that a particular video is cleared for use or that repeating content will meet every channel or monetization policy.
Costs that can remain even when instance hours are covered
- Offer limits and credits: eligible usage beyond applicable limits can be billed, and a credit-based benefit can end when credits are exhausted. The account’s offer terms determine what applies. AWS Free Tier terms.
- CPU credits: AWS’s t4g.small FAQ notes possible charges for surplus CPU credits. A continuous encoding workload should not be assumed to stay within an included allowance without checking its actual usage. Amazon EC2 FAQs.
- Other resources: storage, network transfer, and any additional services in the setup are not proven free by the t4g.small trial statement. Review each item in the AWS billing view and configuration-specific estimate.
- Region and workload: instance type, Region, resolution, bitrate, runtime, and audience or distribution model can change what resources are needed. The total cannot be determined without those details and the account’s current offer.
AWS publishes a separate managed-service estimate of $3,838.69 for approximately 100 viewers and 200 monthly HD live-event hours in US East (N. Virginia). That estimate is for AWS’s managed Live Streaming on AWS solution, with its stated assumptions and encoding, packaging, and distribution components; it is not a price estimate for one EC2 instance sending a stream to YouTube. EC2 versus managed streaming services
EC2 is a compute host that you configure and operate for your encoder. A managed streaming stack has its own component model and pricing, which may include encoding, packaging, and distribution. Compare the service being priced, not just the word “streaming.”
AWS Interactive Video Service (IVS) has separate input, output, and other pricing and Free Tier allowances; those allowances do not establish that EC2 is free. AWS’s managed Live Streaming on AWS estimate likewise describes a different service configuration, not a universal cost for sending a single stream to YouTube. Common problems and what to check
- The setup is not actually free: check the account creation cohort, eligible instance type, Region, offer status, credit balance, and billing view. Do not infer total cost from instance hours alone.
- A t4g.small bill includes CPU credits: AWS warns that surplus CPU credits may be charged. Review the usage and the applicable offer terms before treating the trial as a fixed zero-cost arrangement.
- YouTube reports a poor or missing ingest signal: check the stream key and destination settings, then compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current table. The recommended bitrate depends on the chosen output configuration.
- The stream stops when left unattended: verify the encoder process and instance are still running and inspect the connection status. EC2’s compute eligibility does not itself guarantee uninterrupted encoder operation.
- The video is not authorized or suitable to stream: resolve rights and policy questions for the video and audio before broadcasting; a technically valid encoder connection does not grant content rights.
