Start by copying the current stream key for the correct broadcast from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and updating the value FFmpeg uses. If the key is current, check that the stream, ingestion server, application path, and protocol all match that broadcast. An RTMPS/TLS or network failure is different from YouTube rejecting a key, so use the actual FFmpeg error and Live Control Room status to identify which problem you have.
Fix the key and destination first
- Select the intended broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream (labels may vary), then select the scheduled or current stream you mean to send. Do not assume a key copied for another stream is interchangeable. YouTube describes the key as the value the encoder uses to route and authenticate its feed. YouTube’s live stream settings help explains keys and permissions.
- Copy or reset the key in Live Control Room. Replace the stored value in the FFmpeg command, configuration file, or wrapper that launches FFmpeg. YouTube’s stated remedy for a third-party encoder startup error is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Channel owners and managers can reset keys; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps cover this recovery.
- Match every destination component. Compare the current stream’s server URL and key with the values FFmpeg receives. Depending on the configuration, the server, application/path, and stream name (key) can be separate fields or combined in the publishing URL. Do not move the key between URL parts by guesswork: use the exact values shown for that stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, FFmpeg’s protocol documentation, and the API description of ingestion addresses and stream names.
- Use a schematic command only as a guide. This illustrates the output shape, not a verified universal command for every YouTube stream or FFmpeg setup:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'Replace the placeholders locally with the exact destination and key for your selected stream, and adapt input and encoding options to your source. The endpoint/key format can vary. Avoid putting a live key in public examples, screenshots, or support logs; it functions like a password for sending a feed. A key pasted directly into a shell command may remain in shell history, so prefer a protected configuration file or another appropriate local secret-handling method.
Check RTMP versus RTMPS
Use the protocol and endpoint shown for the selected stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content; its developer guide specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application name, and port 443. The hostname also matters for TLS SNI authentication. Google’s RTMPS guide describes the required values and connection issues.

Do not switch protocols while keeping the other protocol’s URL. A transport or TLS failure is not proof that the key itself is wrong.

Retest and diagnose the actual failure
- Start FFmpeg and watch its complete stderr output rather than relying on a summary such as “invalid key.”
- Check the selected broadcast in Live Control Room for whether YouTube is receiving a preview and whether stream health is reported.
- If the key and endpoint match but YouTube receives no healthy feed, check that your FFmpeg build supports the protocol in use, update an outdated encoder if appropriate, and investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends checking encoder currency, stream health, and the network connection when a feed is problematic. See its troubleshooting guide.
Linux does not change YouTube’s key rules. Shell quoting, installed FFmpeg builds, and package details depend on your distribution and setup; no single Linux command or error message establishes that every reported key problem has the same cause. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is useful for stream configuration and monitoring, but bitrate and resolution recommendations do not themselves fix a rejected credential.
If the error persists
Collect the redacted full FFmpeg command, complete error output, FFmpeg version and build configuration, whether you selected RTMP or RTMPS, and whether Live Control Room receives a preview. Remove the stream key and any other secret before sharing. If YouTube does not receive a preview, continue checking the destination, protocol, build support, and outbound connection rather than repeatedly exposing or reposting the key.
