On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts, then set the plugged-in Make my device sleep after option to Never or to a period longer than your planned broadcast. The screen can turn off separately without putting the PC to sleep. If you use a laptop, check its plugged-in lid-close action too.
These changes prevent an idle timeout from suspending Windows; they do not guarantee that an encoder, network connection, power supply, or YouTube stream will keep working. Set up and test the complete broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Keep Windows awake while the PC is plugged in
Windows 11
- Connect the PC to power before a long broadcast.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the plugged-in settings, find Make my device sleep after. Choose Never for an indefinite run, or choose a timeout longer than the planned broadcast.
Microsoft notes that sleep uses little power and lets the PC resume quickly. Leaving a machine awake for a long stream still uses power, so choose a timeout that suits your setup and remember to restore it if you do not want the PC to remain awake afterward. The exact labels and available options can vary by Windows version, hardware, and organization policy. See Microsoft’s Windows sleep guidance.
Windows 10
The older route is Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. In Power Options, adjust the active plan’s sleep timeout and, on a laptop, its lid-close action. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this is a legacy route, not an indication that Windows 10 continues to receive general support. See Microsoft’s power-mode guidance.

Screen-off and sleep are different settings
The screen timeout controls when the display turns off; the sleep timeout controls when Windows suspends the PC. You can let the display turn off while keeping the PC awake. If you want the screen to stay visible for a local preview, set its plugged-in timeout separately in the same Windows 11 settings page. Turning off the display does not itself mean the PC is asleep.
Check a laptop’s lid-close action
Changing the sleep timeout does not necessarily change what happens when you close a laptop lid. Review the plugged-in When I close the lid action in Power Options and choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep if the stream must continue with the lid closed. Microsoft documents lid and power-button actions separately in its sleep guidance.

Before operating a closed-lid laptop for an extended period, check its manufacturer’s cooling and operating advice. A setting that avoids sleep does not prevent heat-related problems.
Verify the 4K 60fps YouTube encoder setup
Keeping Windows awake is only one part of a live loop. Confirm that the chosen player or encoder is configured to repeat the video, then check the encoder’s output settings and YouTube preview. The exact loop controls depend on the application; the Windows power setting does not enable looping.

These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest bitrate figures, not guaranteed ISP upload-speed requirements. Choose settings your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs listed there are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60fps are supported. The guidance says 4K streams use normal latency rather than low latency, and YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and connections.
Protect the stream key and test before going live
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a password: the encoder also needs the stream URL, and the key should be kept private. Configure the encoder, check its preview, and test the stream before a public broadcast. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with representative motion and audio, and watch stream health during the event. Troubleshoot a stream that stops
- The PC enters sleep: Recheck the plugged-in sleep timeout. On a laptop, also check the plugged-in lid-close action. If settings are missing or locked, the PC may be subject to hardware limitations or organization policy.
- The display goes dark but the stream continues: That is consistent with the separate screen-off timeout. Check whether Windows is actually asleep before changing the display setting.
- The PC stays awake but the broadcast stops: Investigate the encoder, network connection, power events, and YouTube stream health separately. Preventing idle sleep does not protect against application crashes, connection loss, or other interruptions.
- The stream is unstable at 4K60: Check that the encoder uses the bitrate recommended for its codec and that the connection can sustain it. Test with similar content and monitor stream health rather than assuming the Windows sleep change fixed ingest problems.
- The video plays once and ends: Check the player or encoder’s repeat/loop configuration. The sleep setting does not control playback repetition.
