Use two locale-specific Playwright browser contexts or projects, capture the same route and page state in each, and compare each rendering with its own approved screenshot baseline. Playwright does not provide a dedicated Hindi-versus-English comparison mode: its visual assertion compares a screenshot with a stored expectation. If you want to inspect the two languages side by side, capture both under matching conditions and review the resulting images together.
Choose what the comparison should prove
There are two useful checks, and they answer different questions:
- Does each language still match its approved design? Keep one English baseline and one Hindi baseline, then run each locale against its own expectation. This catches changes within either language without treating a legitimate difference in text length as a defect.
- How does the layout differ between languages? Capture the same route and state in both locales and inspect the images side by side. This is a visual review, not a special Playwright assertion that diagnoses localization problems.
For either check, confirm that the application actually renders the intended language. Setting the browser context locale is a configuration mechanism; it does not guarantee that a site will translate itself. Many applications choose language from a route, cookie, account setting, or other app-specific state.
Set up two locale-specific Playwright projects
Projects make the browser-context conditions explicit and let the same test run once in English and once in Hindi. The example below uses en-US and hi-IN as locale identifiers; use the identifiers and routing method your application supports. The route shown is illustrative: replace it with a real page in your app.

Configure the projects
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{
name: 'english',
use: { locale: 'en-US' },
},
{
name: 'hindi',
use: { locale: 'hi-IN' },
},
],
});
Playwright applies each project’s locale to its browser context. If your site uses language-specific paths, cookies, or application state, add that setup to the test as well; the locale setting alone may not select the right translation.
Capture and assert a baseline for each project
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('localized page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }, testInfo) => {
await page.goto('https://your-site.example/your-route');
// Add application-specific steps here if needed to select or verify
// the language, dismiss a required dialog, or reach the intended state.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(`${testInfo.project.name}.png`, {
fullPage: true,
});
});
On the first run, Playwright creates expected screenshot files; subsequent runs compare the actual capture with those expectations. Naming the snapshots with the project name keeps the English and Hindi expectations distinct. Review the generated files and confirm each contains the intended language before treating them as approved baselines.
fullPage: true captures the full page. Omit it for a viewport screenshot, or use an element screenshot when only a component matters. Keep the scope identical across locales. If you use a locator screenshot instead, use the same locator and ensure that the element is present in both renderings.

Make the two captures comparable
Visual output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For a meaningful bilingual review, keep the capture conditions aligned and generate and compare baselines in the same environment.

- Keep operating system, viewport dimensions, device scale, and screenshot scope the same.
- Arrange for the same page state in each run: wait for the relevant content, use the same account or test data, and apply equivalent interactions.
- Check that the intended Hindi text and glyphs actually render and that the app’s intended web fonts have loaded. This is an application-specific check; no Hindi-specific font package or font-readiness assertion is prescribed here.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the expectation, and disables animations by default. That helps with some transient visual changes, but does not replace application-specific readiness checks for content or fonts.
Decide what to inspect in the images
For a side-by-side review, use the same route and state under both locales. Look for practical visual issues such as unexpectedly different line wrapping, component height, clipping, overlap, horizontal overflow, and alignment. These are review targets, not defects Playwright identifies automatically.

For regression assertions, interpret differences relative to each locale’s own baseline. English and Hindi text can have different lengths, so one language’s approved layout is not necessarily the right pixel-level expectation for the other.
Control screenshot noise without hiding the bug
Playwright supports a stylePath stylesheet for suppressing volatile content; the stylesheet can affect content in frames and Shadow DOM. Use it narrowly for genuinely irrelevant variability, such as a changing timestamp. Do not hide localized text or layout that the test is intended to validate.

Review and update baselines deliberately
When a design change is intentional, regenerate expected screenshots with --update-snapshots, then inspect the change before accepting it. Playwright UI mode can show expected, actual, and diff images for review. Avoid updating snapshots simply to make a failing test pass: first establish whether the change is intended and whether both language renderings still meet the design requirement.
Or skip the browser setup
For a quick capture of a page, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL and returns an image. For bilingual checks, capture the app’s actual English and Hindi routes separately; the route and language-selection behavior belong to your application. This call illustrates one capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Those captures can help you inspect localized pages, but they do not replace Playwright’s locale-specific baselines and test assertions.

Troubleshooting
The Hindi project still shows English
The browser locale does not force every application to translate. Check the site’s supported locale identifier and its own language-selection mechanism, such as a localized route or persisted preference. Verify the rendered content before approving a snapshot.
The snapshot test fails on a different machine
Rendering differences can come from the host environment as well as the page. Run baseline generation and comparison with aligned operating system, browser version, settings, viewport, and device scale. Do not increase tolerances until you have inspected the diff and identified acceptable variation.
The page changes between captures
Wait for the app-specific content and state needed by the test. Use a narrowly scoped stylesheet to suppress irrelevant dynamic elements if appropriate. The assertion’s stabilization wait does not guarantee that every asynchronous application task or font load is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdating snapshots removes evidence of a regression
Use --update-snapshots only after confirming the visual change is intended. Inspect the expected, actual, and diff images in UI mode, and check both locale projects before accepting new baselines.
