For one repeating lo-fi animation, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotating collection, use OBS’s VLC Video Source with VLC installed. Then choose a resolution and frame rate your connection can sustain, set YouTube’s recommended encoder values, and test the complete playback before relying on a long broadcast. OBS can send the stream, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation or a complete 24-hour YouTube archive.
Choose how your clips will play
Loop one clip with a Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will be live.
- Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Preview playback through the end of the file and confirm it restarts as intended.
OBS documents looping for Media Sources. A single source is the simpler fit when the broadcast should repeat one animation.
Use a playlist for several clips
- Install VLC so OBS can make its VLC Video Source available.
- Add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist with the clips you want to play.
- Preview the playlist through a full cycle. Confirm the clip order, audio, and restart behavior before going live.
OBS documents VLC Video Source playlists, but does not promise gapless transitions or advanced scheduling. Test the actual files rather than assuming clips will switch seamlessly. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Set resolution, frame rate, and encoder values
Choose an output that fits both the source material and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends selecting a quality that is reliable for the connection and running a speed test. Its live streams are transcoded for different viewers, but that does not make an unstable upload reliable. The bitrates below are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations and minimums, not guarantees of stable playback.

| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate | YouTube minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures apply to the listed H.264 outputs. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings table for other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates, since recommended values differ.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec and protocol: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS; RTMPS is recommended. Confirm the selected encoder and protocol are supported by your setup.
- Typical stereo SDR audio: AAC or MP3, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo.
- Color: Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR.
Decide between 30 and 60 fps
Use the source frame rate as a starting point. Thirty fps is a reasonable starting comparison when it matches the animation and visual goal; YouTube does not prescribe a frame rate for lo-fi animation. A 60 fps output may suit motion that benefits from it, but it requires more bitrate and sustained capacity. Test representative sections: a mostly still scene and one with moving particles or camera motion may compress differently. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video movement; the comparison is practical guidance, not a measured result.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live safely
- Make sure the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare the encoder stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details. Keep the stream key private; do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
- Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview. Check audio, video, and stream health before making the broadcast public.
YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring quality. Check that any local recording is growing and that the resulting file can be played. There is no universal OBS preset that guarantees a 24/7 run on every computer, encoder, source file, and network. Guidance: YouTube live-streaming tips.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
A 24-hour live stream is outside YouTube’s reliable automatic archive window. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours may be archived automatically; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a replay matters, plan a separate local recording and retention workflow, or consider deliberate shorter sessions. Neither splitting sessions nor recording locally is guaranteed to preserve every moment, so verify the actual files and process.

Read YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance before choosing an archive plan. A long-running encoder also needs a recovery plan for computer, source-file, OBS, or internet interruptions; YouTube’s published guidance supports testing and monitoring, not a specific uptime guarantee.
Clear rights for the stream and its replay
Only broadcast clips and audio you are authorized to use. YouTube’s live-stream terms require compliance with Community Guidelines and all necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Troubleshoot common problems
- Media Source stops at the end: Reopen its properties and check Loop; preview the full file to confirm the behavior.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC, then check OBS for the source again. OBS’s playlist source depends on VLC being installed.
- Video or audio stutters: Check YouTube stream health and compare the selected output bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Test a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot reliably sustain the current output; rerun a test using representative motion and audio.
- Preview does not appear: Confirm the encoder stream is prepared in Live Control Room, the OBS stream details are correct, and the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. Do not expose the stream key while troubleshooting.
- No complete replay after a long broadcast: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured automatically, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Check local recordings and revise the archive plan rather than assuming YouTube saved the full stream.
- Playlist changes are not seamless: OBS does not promise gapless transitions in its source documentation. Test the exact clips and playlist cycle before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream without keeping OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not live camera input. Start your free StreamNeo day.
