To loop a video on YouTube Live at 4K 60fps from Ubuntu, create a looping Media Source in OBS, configure a 3840×2160, 60 fps output, choose a supported encoder and YouTube-recommended bitrate, then connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room over RTMPS. Rehearse the complete setup: a compatible Ubuntu system is not automatically capable of sustaining 4K60 encoding, and long streams need a local recording if you need a reliable archive.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- A local video file, or VLC installed if you want to play a playlist through OBS’s VLC Video source.
- OBS Studio installed using the OBS Project’s Linux installation instructions. Check the current instructions for your Ubuntu release; the guidance covers Ubuntu 18.04 or newer.
- A stable internet connection with enough available upload capacity for the full stream bitrate, plus headroom.
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. Those are compatibility prerequisites, not a guarantee of 4K60 streaming performance. OBS notes that its actual CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. No particular CPU, GPU, or Ubuntu driver can be recommended without knowing your system; verify the encoder available on your installation and test it under sustained load. See OBS system requirements.
Create a looping video source in OBS
Loop one video file
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- Under Sources, select + and add Media Source.
- In the source properties, select the local video file and enable Loop.
- Fit or scale the source to the canvas. If the video is smaller than the canvas, enlarging it does not add detail absent from the original file.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC so its libraries are available to OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist with the files to play.
- Check Loop Playlist, which OBS documents as on by default for this source.
OBS documents the repeat controls for Media Source and VLC Video sources, but that does not guarantee a gapless transition for every file or system. Inspect the first and last frames and the audio transition, then play through a full cycle before going live.
Set the video output to 4K 60fps
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and the common FPS value to 60.
- Apply the settings, then confirm the scene renders smoothly. A lower-resolution source can be scaled to 4K output, but scaling cannot restore missing source detail.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help choose starting settings, but a successful wizard result does not establish that the machine can maintain 4K60 over a long session. Rehearse with the actual scene and encoder you will use.

Choose an encoder and YouTube bitrate
In Settings → Output, switch to Advanced mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Choose an encoder that is actually available and stable in your OBS build and Ubuntu driver. OBS says a hardware encoder can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; it specifically documents Intel Quick Sync on compatible Intel HD Graphics hardware on Linux. Other vendor encoders depend on the installed OBS build, drivers, GPU, and codec, so do not assume support based only on a GPU brand or model label.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, gives these 2160p60 bitrate recommendations. The figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of the bitrate or performance an individual system will achieve.

| Ingest codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For whichever supported codec you use, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its table supports up to 60 fps and recommends AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 kbps audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 with 8-bit color for SDR. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions again before a stream because these settings can change.
For SDR 4K60, AV1 or HEVC has a lower recommended bitrate than H.264 in YouTube’s table, but only choose one if OBS exposes a stable encoder and the ingest setup accepts it. H.264 is the documented fallback when a stable AV1 or HEVC option is unavailable, at its higher 50 Mbps recommendation. YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for normal latency; the low-latency optimization option is unavailable at 4K.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the server information and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS if available. Otherwise enter the server information and key from Live Control Room in the stream settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder connection guidance and stream-key help.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room, then check stream health before making the stream public.
For a scheduled event, YouTube advises preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that window to confirm the incoming picture, audio, and stream-health status rather than assuming that OBS showing an active connection means the YouTube feed is ready. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Check upload capacity and run a rehearsal
YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate and notes that other users or devices sharing the network reduce available capacity. Measure upload speed on the connection you will use live and account for other outgoing traffic. Applying YouTube’s 20% guidance to its recommended video bitrates gives these minimum available upload figures:

| Codec at YouTube’s recommended 2160p60 bitrate | Available upload with 20% headroom |
|---|---|
| H.264 at 50 Mbps | At least 60 Mbps |
| AV1 or HEVC at 35 Mbps | At least 42 Mbps |
The headroom values are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s recommendation, not separately published YouTube bitrate requirements. If the connection is shared or variable, a speed test result alone does not ensure that the full capacity will remain available during the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Play representative video and audio, not just a static test image.
- Confirm a complete loop and listen for an abrupt audio cut or transition.
- Check audio/video synchronization and the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Watch OBS for rendering or encoding lag and YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings.
- Rehearse for long enough to expose sustained rendering, encoding, and network problems before relying on the stream.
Plan for a long stream and its archive
YouTube can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, including 1440p and 2160p streams. If a stream runs longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, enable local recording in OBS, check that the recording file is growing, and plan a controlled stop and restart before the 12-hour boundary if you need YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Local recording considerations
- Confirm the recording path has enough free disk space for the planned duration.
- Use a recording format and encoder supported by your installed OBS setup, and verify that recording and streaming together do not overload the machine.
- Keep the local recording separate from the YouTube archive; one does not guarantee the other.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 loop problems
The stream will not start
- Check channel eligibility: verify the channel has live-streaming access and no restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Check stream details: confirm the selected YouTube stream, server, and key match. If the key was exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Check the connection type: use YouTube RTMPS where available, and review the incoming feed in Live Control Room.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the picture drops frames
- Insufficient or inconsistent upload: retest on the live connection, include the recommended 20% headroom, and reduce competing network use. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen recommended bitrate, the machine or connection may not be suitable for that configuration.
- Encoder or rendering overload: inspect OBS statistics for rendering and encoding lag. Confirm the chosen encoder is supported by the current OBS build and Ubuntu driver, and test a simpler scene or a lower output setting to isolate the bottleneck.
- Unsupported codec or protocol combination: choose an encoder actually offered by OBS and accepted by YouTube for the selected ingest connection; use H.264 if a stable AV1 or HEVC encoder is not available.
The video does not loop as expected
- For one file, reopen Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled.
- For a playlist, confirm VLC is installed, OBS can load the VLC Video source, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Play through a full cycle locally. A visible or audible discontinuity may come from the media file’s ending and beginning rather than a missing repeat setting.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete
Check the stream duration. Automatic archiving is not assured for streams longer than 12 hours, so use a verified local recording when an extended archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube without leaving an Ubuntu PC running, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
