Neither Google Cloud Compute Engine nor AWS EC2 is a proven faster or cheaper choice for YouTube streaming in India. YouTube needs an encoder that sends a stream URL and stream key; it does not require that encoder to run on either cloud provider. If you do need a cloud VM, choose based on the exact instance, region, sustained outbound route, stream design and current bill—not a headline bandwidth figure. For one feed going to YouTube, Google Cloud lists transfer to YouTube as no charge, while AWS describes a separate 100 GB/month data-transfer-out allowance with conditions. Those are different billing treatments, not a like-for-like verdict.

Do you need a cloud VM to live stream on YouTube?

No. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key, and does not prescribe Compute Engine or EC2. You can send a stream from another suitable encoder without either service. A VM is relevant if you have a specific reason to host an encoder, processing, relay or automation workload in the cloud. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Decide what the cloud machine is supposed to do before comparing providers. A VM sending one outbound feed to YouTube is not the same architecture as a service that packages a stream and distributes it to viewers. Their network paths, services and costs differ.

Compute Engine vs EC2: what the evidence supports

Decision Google Cloud Compute Engine AWS EC2 How to interpret it
Is a VM required by YouTube? No; an optional host for an encoder or related workload, per YouTube’s encoder setup. No; an optional host for an encoder or related workload, per YouTube’s encoder setup. Choose a VM only if your workflow needs one.
External network limits For ordinary external-destination flows, Google documents a 3 Gbps per-flow limit, alongside machine, tier, aggregate and project-quota constraints. It is a documented maximum, not a guarantee. Google Cloud network bandwidth documentation. Bandwidth depends on the instance and destination. Some smaller instances use baseline network I/O credits to burst; traffic through an internet gateway can use less than the instance’s full stated bandwidth. AWS EC2 network bandwidth documentation. Compare sustained outbound performance on the route you will actually use, not unlike headline specifications.
Transfer to YouTube Google’s pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine and GKE to specific Google products including YouTube as no charge. Other internet egress is priced separately. Google Cloud network pricing. AWS’s EC2 pricing page states 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions except China and GovCloud; other transfer may be charged under the current table. AWS EC2 On-Demand Instance Pricing. These are not equivalent allowances. Confirm how your project’s traffic is classified and billed.
India region and comparable VM Google’s network pricing names Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2) among Premium Tier locations. Exact VM SKU availability and quota still need checking for the chosen region. Google Cloud network pricing. A matched current India-region EC2 SKU and equivalent Compute Engine price are not stated in the cited EC2 bandwidth and pricing sources. Verify the region and instance availability for your deployment. AWS EC2 network bandwidth; EC2 pricing. The available information does not establish an India-region, same-price comparison.
Managed live-streaming services Google Live Stream API is a separate managed service; its Mumbai location listing does not establish Compute Engine availability or performance. Google Live Stream API locations. AWS’s Live Streaming solution is a larger pipeline involving services such as MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect; its regional support and costs are not the same as a bare EC2 encoder VM. AWS Live Streaming solution deployment planning. Do not compare a managed media pipeline’s total with the price of a single VM.

Which is faster from India for a YouTube live stream?

The available provider specifications do not establish a winner. Google documents a 3 Gbps per-flow limit for ordinary external-destination flows, but actual egress is also constrained by the machine, applicable network tier and route, aggregate capacity and project quota. Google says maximum egress is not guaranteed; packet size, protocol overhead, flow count, drivers, operating-system configuration and congestion can affect results. AWS says network performance depends on instance size and destination. Its documentation gives m5.8xlarge (32 vCPUs) at 10 Gbps and m5.16xlarge (64 vCPUs) at 20 Gbps as examples, and notes that internet-gateway traffic can use only 50% of available bandwidth in that example. These are AWS examples, not recommendations for a YouTube stream. For many instances with 16 vCPUs or fewer, AWS describes baseline-plus-credit bursting; burst is best effort and typically lasts 5 to 60 minutes. See AWS EC2 instance network bandwidth.

Those figures describe different systems and conditions; they are not a matched benchmark from India to YouTube. A useful comparison needs the same stream, protocol, encoder, operating-system and driver setup, event duration, and comparable regions and instance sizes. Measure the upload for the whole expected event and monitor packet loss, dropped frames and YouTube stream health. No India-to-YouTube provider performance test is established by the cited material.

How much does it cost to stream from a VM to YouTube?

Start by separating the feed sent to YouTube from any traffic delivered to viewers. Google Cloud’s network pricing page lists data transfer from Compute Engine and GKE to YouTube among specific Google-product destinations with no charge. It separately prices ordinary internet data transfer out; Mumbai and Delhi appear among the Premium Tier location material, with destination-based monthly volume tiers. This special YouTube destination treatment does not mean all Google Cloud egress is free. Check the current pricing page and your project’s billing classification for the actual route and workload: Google Cloud network pricing.

AWS states that 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out is free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions except China and GovCloud. This is not the same as Google’s specific YouTube-destination treatment. Check the current rate table, account eligibility and transfer destination before estimating a bill: AWS EC2 On-Demand Instance Pricing.

AWS’s packaged live-streaming guide illustrates a different kind of deployment: a managed pipeline with encoding, packaging and audience distribution. Its example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with around 1,000 viewers is an estimate for US East (N. Virginia) under the guide’s assumptions, mostly reflecting distribution cost. It is not a quote for an EC2 VM sending one feed to YouTube or an India price comparison. The guide says actual costs may differ: AWS Live Streaming on AWS deployment planning.

For a defensible estimate, identify the region and exact instance, stream duration and bitrate, route and destination, any discounts and taxes, and applicable quotas. Include any separate processing or viewer-delivery services; do not add viewer distribution costs to a one-feed-to-YouTube estimate unless your design actually distributes the stream to viewers.

How to choose and test a VM for YouTube

  1. Define the workload. Decide whether the machine will encode a live camera or other source, process or relay a feed, automate a task, or distribute video to viewers. Do not select a managed streaming pipeline if all you need is a single encoder-to-YouTube feed without accounting for the extra services.
  2. Set the YouTube stream target. Choose codec, resolution and frame rate first, then consult YouTube’s current recommendation for that combination. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a keyframe interval of two seconds, and not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; use the official table rather than assuming one number applies to every stream. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
  3. Compare actual regional instances. Check that the intended VM type is currently available in the chosen India region, and verify project or account quotas. Compare machines that can sustain the required encoder workload and outbound stream rather than matching only a provider’s advertised network maximum.
  4. Estimate the complete bill. Classify the outbound destination as YouTube ingest or other internet delivery, and use the current provider pricing page for the exact region and traffic. Include VM runtime and any additional services. Recheck rates and eligibility when deploying.
  5. Run a representative event-length test. Send the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and motion over the intended protocol and route. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; verify sustained upload headroom, packet loss, dropped frames and any YouTube health messages during the test. Download speed alone does not demonstrate sufficient upload capacity. YouTube encoder settings and live guidance.
  6. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not expose it in logs, screenshots or public configuration. Store it in a protected secret mechanism where available, and rotate it if disclosed. Configure RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
  7. Review rights and channel rules. Before sending a recording, music or other material, make sure you have the rights needed to stream it and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules. A technically healthy stream does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible under YouTube’s policies.

Troubleshooting a cloud-to-YouTube stream

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the encoder’s stream URL, selected stream key and RTMPS configuration. Check that the key has not been revoked or rotated and that it has not been pasted incorrectly.
  • Stream health degrades during a long event: check sustained outbound performance rather than a brief speed result. On EC2, a smaller instance’s initial burst may not represent long-run baseline capacity; on Compute Engine, documented egress maxima are not guaranteed. Test the actual instance and route for the expected duration.
  • Frames drop or the image stutters: check the encoder workload and stream-health messages, then verify bitrate, codec, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s guidance. Network overhead and congestion mean the target video bitrate is not the entire network requirement.
  • The estimate is higher than expected: determine whether traffic is to YouTube ingest or another destination, and separate VM runtime, ordinary internet egress and managed media or viewer-delivery services. Recheck current rate tables and the account’s billing classification.
  • The expected instance cannot be launched: confirm current instance availability and quota in the selected region; do not infer VM availability from a managed service’s regional list.
  • The stream is technically sound but content is challenged: investigate rights and channel-policy compliance separately from network troubleshooting. A cloud provider cannot grant permission to use third-party content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube channel, rather than to host and maintain your own encoder VM, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service from Yorker Media. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.

Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer can be off and your home connection does not need to keep the stream running. Every slot uses one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Verdict

For a single stream sent to YouTube, Google Cloud’s stated no-charge treatment for transfer to YouTube may make its network bill simpler to assess, but it does not prove that Compute Engine is faster or cheaper overall. AWS’s 100 GB/month transfer-out allowance has different conditions and cannot be treated as the same benefit. For either provider, verify the exact India-region VM, quota, destination billing and sustained route, then test the stream end to end. If you do not need to operate a VM and want uploaded videos to loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is the more direct cloud-hosted option.
