In OBS, add the prerecorded clip as a Media Source, put it above the background in the Sources list, and apply a Chroma Key filter to the clip. OBS’s documented starting values are Green, Similarity 400, Smoothness 80, and Key Color Spill Reduction 100. They are defaults—not guaranteed settings for every clip—so tune them by watching the keyed footage over the scene you plan to use.
Set up the prerecorded overlay in OBS
- Add the clip: In the scene, add a Media Source and select the local video file. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video types. The Media Source Loop option defaults to Off; turn it on if the overlay should repeat. Restart playback when source becomes active defaults to On, and Show nothing when playback ends defaults to On, so the finished clip does not leave its last frame on screen. OBS Media Sources.
- Choose the background: Add or select the scene element that should show through the removed color.
- Set the layer order: In the Sources list, move the clip above the background. Sources higher in the list appear above lower sources. OBS Sources Guide.
- Add the filter: Open the clip source’s context menu, choose Filters, then add the Chroma Key effect filter. It removes a selected color from the source. OBS Filters Guide.
- Check audio: A Media Source can include audio. Preview the scene and confirm whether the clip’s audio should be heard alongside the rest of the stream.
OBS Chroma Key defaults and what to adjust
These are the OBS Project’s documented Chroma Key filter defaults. Start with them, then match the key color to the actual background in your clip and adjust while watching the preview. OBS Chroma Key Filter reference.

Tune the key against your actual footage
There is no single final numeric setting that can be recommended without seeing the footage. Background color, compression, edge quality, movement, subject detail, and the intended composite all affect the result. Use the preview—not a preset—as the decision point.
- Begin with the documented defaults and inspect the clip over the background it will use in the scene.
- If key-colored areas remain, raise Similarity gradually. Stop if wanted subject detail starts to disappear.
- If the cutout edge looks too hard, adjust Smoothness to soften it. Check that the result still preserves the subject’s detail.
- If key-colored fringes remain around the subject, adjust Key Color Spill Reduction. This addresses residual color at edges rather than the overall removal threshold.
- Watch representative movement and fine detail after each change. A matte that looks acceptable on a still frame may show defects when the subject moves.
Check the YouTube Live stream before going on air
The Chroma Key filter controls the image composed in OBS; it is separate from the stream encoder settings. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health and messages. For general SDR encoder guidance, YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed four seconds), and Rec. 709 color space. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit your connection and intended stream rather than applying unrelated HDR guidance. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
