If the same YouTube stream key works in OBS but fails in FFmpeg, compare the full ingest setup—not just the key. Check YouTube’s current server URL and stream key, confirm whether the server uses RTMP or RTMPS, then investigate FFmpeg’s protocol support and error output. Only after FFmpeg connects should you focus on codecs, bitrate, and keyframes.

1. Compare the YouTube URL and stream key

YouTube uses two separate encoder values: the server URL and the stream key. The key acts like the stream’s password, but matching the key alone does not make the OBS and FFmpeg configurations equivalent. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to obtain and enter them.

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current stream URL and key again.
  2. Compare the URL, protocol, and key with the values supplied to FFmpeg. Check for a stale key, a changed key, or a URL copied from a different setup.
  3. If YouTube has issued a new key during troubleshooting, update FFmpeg to use it.
  4. Keep the key private. Do not include it in a public post, screenshot, or unredacted log.

A successful OBS connection confirms that OBS can use its configured values; it does not prove FFmpeg is using the same URL, protocol, or key.

2. Check RTMP versus RTMPS

YouTube recommends RTMPS. The ordinary RTMP address may appear by default in Live Control Room, so deliberately select or reveal the RTMPS URL and compare it with FFmpeg’s server address. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance treats protocol and server mismatches as possible causes of connection and SSL errors.

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  • “The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate”: verify that FFmpeg is using the correct RTMPS URL. If the URL is correct, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
  • “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out”: verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.

These errors are clues, not proof of a single cause. Changing ports will not fix a wrong server address, and an RTMPS URL will not help if the client or build cannot use that protocol.

3. Identify what FFmpeg actually supports

OBS working does not establish which protocols a particular FFmpeg build supports, nor does it identify the cause of the difference. The exact diagnosis depends on the FFmpeg version and build, the redacted command, and the complete error output. Avoid assuming that a command-line example from another system applies to your build.

For a more precise diagnosis, gather the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the command with the stream key removed, and the full error text. Check those details against the current FFmpeg documentation. Do not share a command containing a live key: redact it before asking for help or posting logs.

4. Check media settings after a connection is established

If FFmpeg connects but YouTube rejects, flags, or reports poor stream health, compare the output with YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds.

Bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the matching row in YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. These media settings matter after connection and authentication; they are not the first explanation to pursue when FFmpeg cannot connect at all.

5. Separate FFmpeg output problems from network problems

Check FFmpeg’s local output and error log, then compare what the encoder is producing with the stream status in Live Control Room. YouTube advises checking encoder errors and CPU load when local output is poor. If local audio and video look healthy, test outbound internet connectivity; if the test identifies a connection problem, YouTube’s guidance is to contact your internet service provider.
