Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your MediaLive video reaches YouTube but has no sound, trace the audio path in order: verify audio at the source, check the MediaLive input selector, confirm the output audio encode and mapping, then inspect YouTube ingest and playback. The title alone does not identify the cause; the input type, protocol, selectors, and preview state matter.
1. Confirm the source audio is present
Listen to or inspect the signal before changing MediaLive or YouTube settings. If the source itself has no audio, downstream configuration cannot restore it.
If the source is AWS Elemental Link
Check that the device has signal lock and review its EncoderRunning metric. AWS explains that a value of 0 means the encoder is not processing the input; verify that a valid signal is being sent to the device. AWS Elemental MediaLive metrics documentation.
2. Check the MediaLive input audio selector
In the channel’s input attachment, confirm that MediaLive can extract the intended audio track. Audio selectors are input-specific: depending on the source, the selected asset may be identified by PID, language, or another applicable attribute. RTMP is described as carrying one audio asset, while HLS and several multi-track input types can require a more specific selection. Consult the selector requirements for your input type in the MediaLive input documentation.

When the channel has multiple inputs
If audio fails only when the channel switches to certain inputs, compare each input’s selector and output mapping. AWS says a multiple-input channel must extract the same audio languages from each input and use identical selector names across inputs. A selector that works for one attachment may not match the audio layout of another.
3. Verify the output audio encode and mapping
Inspect the output that feeds YouTube. Make sure it contains an audio encode and that the encode references the selector for the intended input audio. A video encode alone can produce a picture without sound.

For the documented MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS example
AWS’s HLS-to-YouTube example uses an HLS output group; in Stream settings it selects Audio 1 and uses AAC audio. AWS also specifies AAC in MPEG-2 transport stream for YouTube HLS audio. This is a configuration example published on 14 April 2021, not a guarantee that every account’s current console labels or options are identical; verify the options shown for your channel. AWS Media Blog: setting up a MediaLive live stream to YouTube.
Do not apply the HLS example blindly to an RTMP output. Confirm the output group and audio format against the ingest workflow you actually configured in YouTube Live Control Room.

4. Confirm YouTube ingest and identify where sound disappears
Verify that MediaLive is sending to the intended YouTube destination using the stream URL and stream key configured for that broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance directs creators to configure their encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Compare the audio at the source with the Live Control Room preview, then compare that preview with the viewer playback device:

This comparison narrows down where to investigate; it does not by itself prove a particular cause.

| Sample rate | 48 kHz |
| Audio bitrate | 384 Kbps |
| RTMP audio codec | AAC |

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| There is no audio before MediaLive. | Repair the source signal or audio device; for Elemental Link, check signal lock and EncoderRunning. |
| One input works, another is silent. | Compare input-specific selectors, selected languages or tracks, and selector names across attachments. |
| Video reaches YouTube but the preview has no sound. | Confirm an output audio encode exists, maps to the intended selector, uses a compatible format, and goes to the expected ingest destination. |
| The Live Control Room preview has sound, but playback does not. | Check mute and volume on the player and playback device before reconfiguring MediaLive. |
| Stereo works but intended 5.1 does not. | Check 5.1-specific codec, sample-rate, bitrate, content, and encoder compatibility rather than treating those values as general stereo requirements. |
What to collect if the stream is still silent
Before escalating, record the input type, whether audio is audible at the source, the selector configuration for each input attachment, the output group and audio encode mapping, the ingest protocol and destination, and whether the Live Control Room preview contains audio. Those details distinguish a source failure from an extraction, mapping, ingest, or playback problem.
