Choose Chromatic if your team builds and reviews UI in Storybook; evaluate Percy if you want visual checks connected to existing test suites or need its BrowserStack Automate workflow for selected browser and device combinations. Neither is the universal winner. The better fit depends on what you capture, how your team approves changes, which browser configurations matter, and how your usage is counted.

What visual regression testing checks

Visual regression testing compares a new rendering of a page or component with an approved baseline and highlights differences for review. It helps catch unintended appearance changes that functional tests—which check whether behavior works—may not detect. It complements, rather than replaces, functional and accessibility testing.

In broad terms, a team captures an initial rendering, then captures the same target after code changes. The service compares the images and presents visual differences for a person to assess. Both Chromatic and Percy support this review-oriented workflow, though their integrations and fit differ.

Chromatic vs Percy at a glance

Decision point Chromatic Percy
Best-established fit Component-centered work organized in Storybook; its documentation also describes Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress integrations. Visual checks integrated with existing test and CI workflows across multiple frameworks.
Baseline and review workflow Chromatic describes baselines following Git branches and merges, with hosted review connected to builds. These are vendor descriptions. Percy documents baseline management and grouped snapshot review. Confirm how that workflow fits your repository and branch practices.
Browser and device needs Chromatic’s comparison page describes coverage of latest stable common browsers; its percentage claim is vendor-reported. Web projects offer browser selection. A separate Percy-on-Automate project type supports specified desktop or mobile operating systems, devices, and browsers.
Execution and investigation Chromatic claims unlimited parallelization and archived DOM, styles, and assets for inspection. Percy documents visual review and root-cause-analysis features. Confirm execution limits for the plan you select.
Usage unit The comparison page quotes included snapshots; check current plan definitions and pricing. Usage is measured in screenshots, with each page or component rendered for an individual browser and responsive-width combination counting separately.

When Chromatic is the stronger fit

Your UI work is organized around Storybook

Chromatic is especially suited to teams that model components and their states in Storybook. If stories already represent the combinations you care about—such as a button’s disabled state or a dialog’s open state—connecting visual review to those stories can make the tested surface clear and reviewable.

You want review tied to component changes

Chromatic describes a hosted workflow in which builds and component changes can be reviewed together, with baselines following Git branches and merges. Treat those statements as Chromatic’s description of its service and validate the actual approval and branch behavior against your team’s repository conventions.

You use other supported test integrations

Storybook is not the only integration described in Chromatic’s documentation: it also lists Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Check the integration details for the test setup and versions your project actually uses before committing to a migration or workflow change.

When Percy is the stronger fit

You want to add visual checks to existing tests

Percy is worth evaluating when your team wants captures to fit into existing test frameworks and CI workflows rather than making Storybook the center of the process. BrowserStack documents integrations across a range of frameworks, along with baseline management and grouped review.

You need selected device and browser combinations

Percy documents a project type that works with BrowserStack Automate for specified desktop and mobile operating systems, devices, and browsers. That is relevant when your coverage needs call for explicit device configurations; it does not mean every team needs that broader matrix.

You need to understand screenshot consumption

BrowserStack’s Percy plans and billing documentation defines a screenshot as “a rendering of a page or component in an individual browser and at a specific width.” Thus, one test target can consume multiple screenshots when rendered across browser and width combinations.

Estimate usage before comparing prices

Do not compare a count of pages or test cases directly with a service’s billed screenshot count. Estimate the rendered combinations and run frequency. For example, BrowserStack’s billing documentation gives this example: two pages × two browsers × three widths equals 12 screenshots, displayed in the UI as two snapshots. The example illustrates why a snapshot is not necessarily one billed screenshot.

  1. Count the pages or components you intend to capture.
  2. Multiply by the meaningful states or data variants each target needs.
  3. Multiply by browser and responsive-width combinations. In Percy, those individual renderings count toward screenshot usage.
  4. Multiply by how often you expect the relevant CI workflow to run, accounting for pull requests, merges, and any scheduled runs your team uses.
  5. Compare the resulting estimate with the current official plan allowance and overage terms before selecting a plan.

BrowserStack’s Percy billing documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5,000 free screenshots per month and says the free plan includes unlimited users and projects. Paid plans allocate screenshot usage and can charge overages. Limits and terms can change, so verify the live plan details when making a decision.

Chromatic’s comparison page, updated August 2026, lists a $179/month plan with 35,000 included snapshots. This is a Chromatic-published comparison figure, not an independently verified live quote; confirm current pricing and how snapshots are defined on its current pricing page. The same page claims its coverage includes 95.93% of users based on latest stable versions of common browsers. That is a vendor claim, not an independent measurement. It also reports “over 7.3 billion tests across thousands of companies”; that scale statement is not a comparative quality measure.

How to make a fair evaluation

Choose representative targets

Include the UI that matters to your team: isolated component states if you maintain a component library, full pages if that is what your existing tests exercise, or both if your testing needs span those levels. Avoid judging either service only on a trivial example that does not resemble normal changes.

Keep captures deterministic

Use stable test data and wait for the page or component to reach a consistent rendered state. Randomized data, an unstyled flash, or slow resources can make diffs noisy; Chromatic’s own comparison guide notes these as potential sources of visual-test noise.

Compare the review process, not only the diff image

Have the people who will own approvals inspect how a change is associated with a build or branch, how baselines are managed, and how grouped differences are reviewed. Test the investigation tools on an intentional change so the team can assess how it will find the cause of a real diff.

Validate the actual browser matrix and execution limits

Write down the browsers, widths, devices, and operating systems you require, then check whether the selected project type and plan support them. For Percy, confirm execution limits on the intended plan; for Chromatic, treat claims on its comparison page as vendor claims and verify the details relevant to your account.

ScreenshotNeo is a capture-API alternative, not a like-for-like replacement

If your requirement is hosted baseline comparison, diff review, and approvals, compare Chromatic and Percy against those needs. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a visual-regression baseline service. It can be an alternative to try first when the task is to capture clean website screenshots for an app or an AI agent: cookie and consent banners are accepted and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status.

For visual-regression testing, a capture API can supply images to a comparison workflow you build or already use; it does not provide the baseline-review product described above. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Its plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card, then Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000, and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is on every plan.

Common sources of misleading diffs

  • Unstable content: Randomized data, changing timestamps, or rotating content can create differences unrelated to the code change. Use deterministic test fixtures where possible.
  • Capturing too early: A page may be captured before fonts, images, or client-rendered content settle. Make the capture wait for a meaningful ready condition rather than relying on an arbitrary fast run.
  • Too many combinations: Every extra state, browser, or width may increase the amount of review and, depending on the service’s billing model, usage. Select a matrix that reflects supported user experiences.
  • Baseline updates without review: Updating a baseline can hide a genuine regression if reviewers approve changes mechanically. Keep baseline approval within the team’s normal code-review responsibility.

Recommendation

Start with Chromatic when Storybook stories are the natural source of truth for your component states and you want visual review aligned with that workflow. Evaluate Percy when your priority is connecting visual captures to existing tests and CI, or when its BrowserStack Automate project type matches specific device and browser needs. In either case, estimate rendered usage—not merely the number of pages—and run a representative evaluation before committing. Chromatic’s detailed comparison page is published by a vendor in this comparison; its claims about performance, cost savings, and competitor limitations should be treated as Chromatic’s claims, not independent results.
