Those figures apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its recommended video ingest bitrates; they are planning targets, not guarantees.
Calculate the upload speed you need
Use YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate for the codec your encoder will send, add any other simultaneous upload traffic, then divide the total by 0.8 to leave 20% of your connection’s upload capacity unused as headroom.
- Choose the codec. At 4K/2160p and 60 fps, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 50 Mbps for H.264. These are live-ingest recommendations, not upload-speed targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table lists the recommended values.
- Add other outbound traffic. Include uploads from other users and devices on the connection, as well as any other upload activity from the streaming computer. Estimate the total demand before applying headroom.
- Divide by 0.8. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room in available upload bandwidth. The calculation is total bitrate ÷ 0.8.
- Compare with upload speed. Use measured outbound upload capacity, not download speed. The speed available to the encoder may be lower than the connection’s advertised or measured maximum when other people or applications share it.

For example, if the stream uses H.264 at the recommended 50 Mbps and other uploads are using 5 Mbps, estimate 55 Mbps total demand, then divide by 0.8: 68.75 Mbps of sustained upload capacity. Treat other-traffic estimates as variable, not fixed guarantees.
Set the encoder for a 4K/60 live stream
YouTube’s table separates the minimum bitrate from its recommendation. At 4K/2160p and 60 fps, it lists a minimum of 10 Mbps and a recommended 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; for H.264, the minimum is 14 Mbps and the recommendation is 50 Mbps. Do not use the minimum as the upload-capacity target for a reliable loop.

- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as encoder options.
- Rate control: Use CBR encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR.
- Latency: The low-latency option is unavailable at 4K/2160p; YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency.
Choose the codec that your encoder and workflow can reliably produce. If you are sending HDR, do not select AV1 based on its lower recommended bitrate: YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
Check the connection before relying on a loop
A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a promise that the same upload capacity will remain available during a long-running stream. YouTube notes that upload capacity can be affected by shared network use and that interruptions can break a stream.

- Run an upload speed test on the connection the encoder will use. Make sure the measured upload capacity exceeds the target after allowing for other traffic.
- Test with representative audio and movement. A static test image may not reflect the conditions of the actual stream.
- Start a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. Resolve warnings before relying on the setup for an extended loop.
- Use a reliable network connection. A wired Ethernet connection can be an option if Wi-Fi is unstable, but a cable cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet plan.
YouTube does not specify a minimum test duration, and a successful test does not guarantee that capacity will persist throughout a 24/7 loop. For a continuous stream, the required bitrate stays the same over time, but the connection must keep that capacity available.
Estimate data use for a continuous stream
Duration does not change the sustained upload-rate requirement. It does increase the amount of data sent. As a rough decimal estimate, multiply the bitrate in Mbps by the number of hours and by 0.45 to estimate gigabytes transferred. This is a unit conversion estimate, not a measured YouTube usage figure; overhead and operating conditions can change actual data use.

These estimates use the stream’s video bitrate and do not establish the exact data recorded by an ISP or YouTube.
Troubleshoot bandwidth and stream-health problems
- Measured upload speed is below the calculated target: Reduce competing uploads, use a connection with more available outbound capacity, or choose a codec and bitrate your connection can sustain. Do not assume download speed will compensate.
- The nominal connection is fast, but the stream struggles: Check whether household, office, or background-device traffic is consuming upload bandwidth. YouTube cautions that shared connections can leave less capacity for the encoder than the connection’s nominal speed suggests.
- YouTube reports stream-health warnings: Check the encoder’s bitrate and stream settings, the connection’s upload capacity, and other network activity. Test again with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health during the test.
- The stream breaks after a network interruption: A network interruption can break a live stream. Confirm the connection is reliable and test the complete setup before depending on it for a long-running loop.
