Use Playwright to capture the rendered custom element, then use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion to compare it with an approved baseline. You do not need to reach into a shadow root just to capture what the user sees. For repeatable comparisons, keep the component state and rendering environment stable, and choose an element screenshot or a page screenshot according to what you intend to test.
Capture the rendered component, not its hidden implementation
Shadow DOM attaches a separate DOM tree to a host element and encapsulates its internal structure and styles. That boundary matters when locating internal controls or applying ordinary page CSS: a regular document query does not necessarily expose the component’s internals. For a visual test, capture the browser-rendered element or page instead of assuming you must inspect the shadow tree. MDN’s Shadow DOM guide explains the host and encapsulation model.
Playwright can capture a page, a full page, a screenshot buffer, or an individual element through a locator. For a component-only regression test, an element screenshot usually keeps unrelated page changes out of the comparison. Capture the whole page when surrounding layout is part of the visual contract. See Playwright’s screenshot guide.
Take an element screenshot with Playwright
The following example assumes the page contains a custom element named user-card. Replace the URL and selector with your application’s route and component host. Install Playwright and its browser for the project before running the script.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
try {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/profile', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const component = page.locator('user-card');
await component.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await component.screenshot({ path: 'user-card.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The locator targets the custom-element host. Playwright captures its rendered appearance, including what the browser paints from its shadow tree. If you instead need the whole page, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). To process an image in memory rather than write a file, omit path and use the returned buffer.
Choose the right capture boundary
- Element capture: use the host locator when the component’s appearance is the thing under test and surrounding content is irrelevant.
- Page capture: use
page.screenshot()when page layout, component placement, or interactions with nearby content matter. - Full-page capture: set
fullPage: truewhen the visual contract includes content beyond the current viewport. For a tall component, confirm that its full rendered state is intended to be compared rather than only its visible viewport.
Compare screenshots with Playwright Test
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion creates a baseline on its first run and compares later captures against it. Use a locator assertion for a component-level check:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('user card matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/profile', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const component = page.locator('user-card');
await expect(component).toBeVisible();
await expect(component).toHaveScreenshot('user-card.png');
});
Run the test once to create the expected image, review it, then keep it as the approved reference. Later runs compare the new rendering to that reference. Playwright’s assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the last one with the expectation; this can reduce capture of a page mid-settle, but it does not make changing data or state deterministic. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
When a visual change is intentional, review the diff and update the stored baseline through the Playwright snapshot-update workflow. Do not automatically accept every difference: the expected image is a reviewed reference, not merely the last image produced by a test.
Make Shadow DOM visual tests repeatable
Stabilize component state and data
Feed the component deterministic data and put it into a known state before capturing it. Avoid timestamps, random values, rotating content, and network responses that vary from run to run where possible. Waiting for a visible host or for a chosen selector can establish readiness, but a visible host alone does not guarantee that all asynchronous content inside it has finished rendering.
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Generate and compare baselines in the same browser and host environment where practical. Operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all affect rendered pixels. Treat a baseline created in one environment as environment-specific unless you have verified that it is stable elsewhere. Playwright can include browser and platform information in snapshot names; see its visual comparison guidance.

Control known visual noise carefully
Playwright screenshot assertions can disable animations and hide the caret. Screenshot options also support masking regions and injecting styles that pierce Shadow DOM, which can help neutralize known volatile elements. Use these only for genuine sources of noise. Hiding changing prices, status labels, or other meaningful component content can make a test pass while concealing a regression. The relevant options are documented in Playwright’s Page API.
Set diff tolerance deliberately
Playwright visual assertions expose controls such as maxDiffPixels and a color-difference threshold. A tolerance can absorb minor rendering variation, but an overly permissive setting can mask a real defect. Start with a stable environment and narrow scope; adjust tolerance only after reviewing actual diffs, and record why the chosen allowance is appropriate. Refer to the visual comparison options.
Troubleshoot common Shadow DOM screenshot failures
- The locator cannot find an internal control. A regular document query may not cross the Shadow DOM boundary. Prefer capturing the custom-element host when the goal is visual comparison. If internal targeting is needed, use Playwright locator strategies appropriate to the rendered component and confirm the selector against the live page.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete. Confirm that navigation succeeded, the host exists and is visible, and asynchronous component content has loaded. A page-level readiness condition may not correspond to the component’s own readiness; wait for an observable state that represents the content you need.
- Snapshots differ across machines. Align browser, operating system, viewport, settings, and headless mode where possible. Review whether fonts, hardware, or changing data explain the mismatch before raising tolerance.
- The diff is noisy around animation or dynamic content. Disable animation or mask known volatile regions using screenshot options, but keep meaningful component output in the comparison.
- CSS intended to hide a shadow-tree element has no effect. Ordinary page styles may not reach into the shadow tree. Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet injection can pierce Shadow DOM; scope injected rules narrowly and do not remove content that should be tested.
- The shadow root is closed. The cited Playwright and MDN guidance does not establish a general inspection workaround for closed roots. If the behavior under test is what users see, capture the host from outside rather than assuming internal access.
- A changed image seems acceptable but the test fails. Inspect the diff and decide whether the change is intended. Update the baseline only after review, using the snapshot-update workflow.
When local screenshots are enough—and when they are not
Playwright’s local screenshot assertions suit teams that want visual checks alongside browser tests and can manage baselines and diffs in their test workflow. A separate pixel-diff tool or hosted visual-testing service may be worth evaluating when reporting or team review workflows require it. The available evidence here does not establish current feature or pricing comparisons for third-party services, so compare providers against your own requirements rather than assuming a particular service is best.
