For most Indian devotional livestreams going to one YouTube channel, OBS is the practical starting point. OBS produces and encodes the stream; AWS Elemental MediaPackage is a cloud service for packaging and originating streams from an upstream encoder. It is not a like-for-like OBS replacement. Add MediaPackage only when you have a specific packaging or origin-delivery requirement beyond sending a live programme to YouTube.

OBS and MediaPackage do different jobs

Question OBS Studio AWS Elemental MediaPackage
Main role Desktop software for producing and encoding a livestream. Cloud service that receives an upstream stream and packages and originates content for delivery.
Place in a YouTube workflow Compose scenes and audio, then send the stream to YouTube. Add only when a separate packaging or origin-delivery need exists.
Relevant connection detail YouTube lists OBS as an encoder. AWS’s example connects OBS to MediaLive over RTMP, then MediaLive sends HLS to MediaPackage. MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF live inputs pushed over HTTPS; it is not described as generic RTMP ingest.
Cost shape YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. The computer and internet connection still have costs. Usage-based charges for ingested video data and originated or packaged content measured in GB. A total depends on workload and AWS region.
Setup scale A smaller starting setup for a single destination. Requires cloud channel and endpoint configuration; AWS’s example also uses MediaLive and redundancy-related inputs.

Choose the workflow that matches your stream

Use OBS alone for a single YouTube destination

If you need to mix a camera, microphone, recorded material, graphics, or multiple scenes and publish one live programme to YouTube, OBS can be the production and encoding tool. YouTube describes encoder-based streaming as supporting external audio/video hardware and advanced production, and lists OBS as a free, open-source option. No devotional-content-specific technical requirement in the available documentation makes MediaPackage necessary.

Add MediaPackage for a real packaging or origin requirement

MediaPackage channels receive streams from upstream encoders, while origin endpoints hold settings for packaging outbound content. That role is useful when a delivery architecture needs a packaging/origin layer; it does not replace OBS’s scene composition and production functions. The title alone does not establish a need for separate packaging, redundancy, DRM, or multi-format delivery.

What an OBS-to-MediaPackage AWS path entails

AWS’s published OBS workflow is an example architecture, not a direct OBS-to-MediaPackage connection: OBS sends RTMP to AWS Elemental MediaLive, and MediaLive delivers HLS to MediaPackage. The guide dates from 2018, so use it to understand the topology rather than assuming every console screen or step matches the current AWS interface. In that example, AWS instructs users to start the MediaLive channel before starting OBS.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Produce the stream in OBS. Set up the scenes and audio needed for the devotional programme.
  2. Use an upstream encoder service. In AWS’s example, OBS sends RTMP to MediaLive; it is MediaLive that delivers onward to MediaPackage.
  3. Configure MediaPackage for the appropriate input and output. MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF live inputs pushed over HTTPS, with at least one video track. Supported codecs vary by input and output type.
  4. Configure YouTube’s destination separately. Decide how the packaged or originated output will reach the intended playback destination; do not assume that an OBS YouTube output can be pasted into MediaPackage unchanged.

For exact current setup details, use the AWS documentation for the selected MediaLive and MediaPackage versions and the YouTube encoder instructions for the channel. The cited AWS example is useful for understanding components and order, not as a current click-by-click console manual.

Configure the YouTube side before going live

  1. Enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that wait before scheduling a first devotional programme.
  2. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the stream destination and key, and enter them only in the encoder or service that should publish the stream. Treat the key like a password; do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
  3. Choose settings supported by the actual path. Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current recommendations and ensure every AWS ingest/output stage supports the chosen protocol and codecs. MediaPackage v2’s documented live inputs are HLS and CMAF over HTTPS, not generic RTMP.
  4. Check the programme rights and channel rules. Use audio and video you have permission to stream, including music, recordings, and any third-party material. A devotional subject does not itself establish copyright clearance; check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for the material and channel.
  5. Run a private or unlisted test if appropriate. Confirm picture, audio, stream continuity, and the YouTube destination before a scheduled public programme.

India-specific considerations

The technical distinction between OBS and MediaPackage does not change because the channel is Indian. The reviewed documentation does not establish a devotional-specific setting, India-specific technical requirement, or the availability of a particular AWS configuration in a particular Indian region. Check the AWS region you intend to use, its current service availability and pricing, and your own upload connection before designing the path.

Likewise, no India-specific monthly AWS total can be derived without the region, stream duration, data volume, and packaging/output assumptions. Taxes and regional rates may also depend on the account. Do not treat an estimate for another region or workload as your bill.

Costs and complexity: decide before building

  • OBS path: OBS itself is listed by YouTube as free and open source. Budget separately for the computer, capture equipment if needed, and reliable internet.
  • AWS path: AWS describes MediaPackage live packaging charges based on ingested video data and originated/packaged content measured in GB. A meaningful estimate needs the chosen region and actual stream and output assumptions; include MediaLive and any other services in the architecture as applicable.
  • Operational work: The AWS example introduces multiple cloud components and their configuration. That complexity is justified only when the packaging/origin layer solves a requirement you actually have.

Troubleshooting the decision and the connection

  • OBS cannot connect to MediaPackage: Check the architecture and protocol. AWS’s example routes OBS through MediaLive; MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF over HTTPS live inputs, not generic RTMP ingest.
  • YouTube has not accepted the first stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  • The AWS workflow differs from the guide: The OBS-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage document is from 2018. Verify current console labels and configuration in current AWS documentation rather than assuming the example’s interface is unchanged.
  • The AWS bill is unclear: Identify the region, duration, ingested data, and originated or packaged output before estimating. Include the other services in the chosen topology; MediaPackage alone does not describe the full architecture’s cost.
  • A particular Indian setup is unavailable or behaves differently: Check availability and pricing for the specific AWS region and validate the actual upload path. The documentation reviewed does not establish availability or last-mile reliability for an individual creator.
  • Audio or video is blocked or claimed: Review the rights for each recording and YouTube’s current copyright guidance; devotional content is not automatically exempt from copyright rules.
