Best starting point: if your project already uses Playwright, try its built-in screenshot comparisons first. They add no separate visual-testing service, but your team must manage baselines and keep the comparison environment consistent. For hosted review, compare Argos and Chromatic; for a self-managed option, consider BackstopJS. Their free allowances and workflows differ, so choose by framework, screenshot volume, and review needs—not by the word “free” alone.
How to choose a Percy alternative
Visual regression testing captures a page or component and compares later captures with a reference image. A useful Percy alternative needs to fit more than the capture step: consider where browsers run, where baselines live, how changes are reviewed, and what the service counts toward a free allowance.
- Framework fit: Playwright, Cypress, Storybook, or scenario-driven browser capture.
- Hosting: a hosted service can provide a review workflow; a self-managed tool avoids a hosted visual-testing plan but leaves more operations to your team.
- Counting unit: vendors may count screenshots, snapshots, or other units. Do not assume one vendor’s billed snapshot equals another vendor’s screenshot.
- Coverage: decide which pages, states, browsers, and viewport sizes you need. Local capture requires you to build that matrix into your tests.
- Baseline and review work: account for baseline updates, environment stability, pull-request review, and approvals—not just the initial setup.
ScreenshotNeo: an API alternative to try first
If you need screenshots through an API rather than a Percy-style visual regression review system, ScreenshotNeo is a distinct option: it returns website screenshots or PDFs from a GET request. It is not a drop-in replacement for Percy’s baseline comparison and pull-request review workflow; it is for developers who want screenshot capture in an application or automation pipeline.
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Playwright Test: built-in comparisons for Playwright projects
For a team already running Playwright, the built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion is the most direct no-additional-service-cost starting point. Playwright documents that the first run creates reference screenshots and later runs compare against them. Baselines can live alongside the test workflow, so the team controls their generation and updates.
Basic setup
In a Playwright Test file, capture a page with an assertion such as:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
Run the test once to create the reference image, then run it again to compare later output. Consult the Playwright screenshot comparison documentation for configuration and baseline-update details.

Environment consistency is essential
Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible; otherwise, rendering differences can create noise unrelated to an application change. The trade-off is that your team owns baseline maintenance and its collaboration and approval process.

BackstopJS: self-managed, scenario-driven testing
BackstopJS is a free self-managed option described by Argos’s comparison article as using scenarios, Puppeteer or Playwright, and HTML diff reports. That article says it lacks a built-in collaborative team review interface and pull-request approval workflow. Because those implementation and workflow details come from a vendor-authored comparison, verify the project’s current status and documentation before adopting it.
Choose this route if you want to control capture and reporting yourself and can maintain the surrounding test and review workflow. Include the cost of that maintenance in your decision even when there is no hosted plan charge.
Argos: hosted CI and pull-request review
Argos describes a workflow that captures screenshots in the Playwright or Cypress browser used by the team’s tests, then supports CI-based review and pull-request status checks. This can suit a team that wants hosted visual review without moving capture into a separate browser service. The local test setup determines the browser and viewport coverage, so plan that matrix explicitly.
In an Argos article dated July 28, 2026, the Hobby tier is listed at 5,000 screenshots per month, and Pro at $100 per month for 35,000 screenshots. These are vendor-published plan statements, not a guarantee of current terms; check Argos’s current pricing before relying on them. Estimate your own usage from the number of pages and states, viewports, and test runs.

Chromatic: a natural shortlist choice for Storybook
Chromatic maps Storybook stories to visual tests and also describes integrations with Playwright and Cypress. That makes it especially relevant when components and their Storybook stories are the primary review surface.
Chromatic’s comparison page, updated August 2026, states that its free plan includes 5,000 billed snapshots. It lists a $179-per-month plan with 35,000 snapshots and $0.008 per additional snapshot. These are Chromatic’s published terms on that page; verify current plan details and calculate expected usage before choosing. A billed snapshot is a vendor-specific unit, not necessarily equivalent to a screenshot counted by another service.
How the alternatives differ
| Option | Best fit | Capture and workflow | Free allowance or cost detail | Main responsibility or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | API-based screenshot or PDF capture | GET API and MCP tools; not a Percy-style baseline review system | 1,000 shots/month free; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 | Use a separate visual comparison and review workflow if you need Percy-like regression approvals. |
| Playwright Test | Existing Playwright suite | Built-in screenshot assertion with repository-managed reference images | No separate visual-testing service allowance is described here. | Team maintains baselines and consistent rendering environments. |
| BackstopJS | Self-managed scenario-based capture | Argos’s comparison describes Puppeteer or Playwright and HTML diff reports | Described as free by Argos’s comparison; no hosted free quota stated. | Verify current project status; review UI and PR approval workflow are not built in, according to that comparison. |
| Argos | Hosted CI and pull-request review with Playwright or Cypress capture | Capture in the team’s test browser; CI review and PR status checks | Argos article dated July 28, 2026: Hobby 5,000 screenshots/month; Pro $100/month for 35,000 screenshots. | Team defines browser and viewport matrix; recheck current vendor terms. |
| Chromatic | Storybook-centered visual review | Stories map to visual tests; also integrates with Playwright and Cypress | Chromatic page updated August 2026: free 5,000 billed snapshots; $179/month for 35,000; $0.008 per additional snapshot. | Estimate usage in Chromatic’s billed-snapshot unit and verify current terms. |
Estimate whether a free allowance is enough
Do not compare plan limits until you know what each vendor counts. Build an estimate from your test design:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Count the pages or component stories that produce a capture.
- Multiply by distinct UI states and viewport sizes you intend to test.
- Multiply by how often the relevant tests run during a month, including pull requests and scheduled runs.
- Check the provider’s definition of its billed unit and whether retries, branches, or other workflow events affect usage.
This gives your team a workload estimate; the vendor’s unit definition determines how it maps to a plan allowance. The stated free limits for Argos and Chromatic are not interchangeable.

Common problems and practical fixes
Visual tests fail repeatedly without a meaningful UI change
First check whether the baseline and test run use the same host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware conditions, and headless mode. Playwright specifically documents these as possible sources of rendering variation. Standardize the environment before accepting new baselines.
A free plan appears to run out faster than expected
Confirm the product’s billing unit, then recalculate using pages or stories, states, viewports, and monthly test runs. In particular, do not treat Chromatic’s billed snapshots as equivalent to Argos screenshots without checking each provider’s terms.
The team has screenshots but no usable approval process
Capture and review are separate capabilities. Playwright puts reference-image management in your repository and test workflow; BackstopJS is described by Argos as lacking a built-in collaborative review and PR approval workflow. If those features matter, evaluate hosted review options such as Argos or Chromatic against your framework and volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsViewport coverage is incomplete
With capture in your own Playwright or Cypress tests, add the viewport sizes and page states your product actually needs to the test matrix. Do not assume local capture automatically provides cross-viewport coverage.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
Which one should you pick?
- Use Playwright Test if you already use Playwright and are comfortable owning baselines and environment consistency.
- Evaluate BackstopJS if you want a self-managed scenario workflow and can provide your own review process.
- Compare Argos if hosted CI and pull-request review fit your Playwright or Cypress tests.
- Shortlist Chromatic if Storybook stories are central and its billed-snapshot allowance suits your expected workload.
- Try ScreenshotNeo if the need is API- or MCP-driven screenshot capture rather than Percy-style visual regression review.
Chromatic’s comparison page also says it has processed over 7.3 billion tests; that is Chromatic’s own cumulative claim, not an independent measure of quality or market share.
