Create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS, then add a VLC Video source with your playlist. YouTube lets you reuse a custom key, but the key does not keep one live event or watch page running forever; it is a credential OBS uses to send a stream.

What a persistent YouTube stream key does

YouTube calls this a reusable custom stream key. You can save it in OBS and use it again for future encoder streams. It does not, by itself, keep a broadcast continuously live, preserve one event indefinitely, or manage the stream’s title, privacy, and watch page. Those settings belong to the individual stream in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s stream settings guide.

Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.”

Create a reusable key in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab.
  2. In the stream key area, choose Create new stream key. Enter the requested settings and create the key. YouTube says a custom key can be reused.
  3. Copy the stream URL and the stream key. Store the key securely; do not publish or share it.

You can also use Reuse settings when creating a later stream to copy settings and the key from a previous stream. YouTube says auto-start and auto-stop choices are copied with those settings. These controls determine whether encoder signals can start or stop the broadcast; review them before relying on that behavior.

  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. Open OBS and go to its streaming settings. If the YouTube integration is available, select YouTube and follow the connection flow.
  2. If OBS asks for encoder details instead, set the server to the YouTube stream URL and paste the copied key into the Stream Key field. YouTube’s encoder guide describes these as the server URL and stream key fields: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Save the settings. Keep the key private, and make sure OBS is using the intended active key in Live Control Room.

OBS labels and integration options can vary by version and operating system, so use the server and key field names shown by your installed OBS version rather than assuming every setup has identical screens.

Build an ordered, repeating video playlist in OBS

OBS’s basic Media Source plays an individual file. For a list of videos, use VLC Video, which supports playlists. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
  1. Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  2. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source. Add the video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want.
  3. For a fixed sequence, leave Shuffle Playlist off. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should start again after the last file; leave it off if the list should end.
  4. Review Visibility Behaviour. This setting controls what happens to VLC playback when its source is hidden, for example when you switch scenes. Set it so a scene change will not unintentionally pause or stop playback.
  5. Make the playlist source visible in the active scene and check that video and audio play as expected.

OBS notes that VLC Video supports a playlist, unlike Media Source, which is for an individual file. For source management, see the OBS Sources Guide.

Start the broadcast and verify the event

  1. In YouTube Studio, set the actual stream’s title, privacy, and other metadata. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted privacy options. Its default differs by age group: private for ages 13–17 and public for ages 18 and older, so explicitly check the intended choice.
  2. Start streaming from OBS with the playlist source visible. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview, and confirm the picture, audio, playlist order, and repeat behavior.
  3. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live in YouTube Studio when ready. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes this confirmation step.
  4. Verify that the active or scheduled stream is the intended watch page and has the correct privacy setting. A reusable key does not select or manage the event metadata for you.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. Do not assume that reusing a key preserves one ongoing event or handles all archive and watch-page behavior.

Secure or reset the key

If the key may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. Then replace the old key in OBS with the new one. YouTube says editors and viewers cannot reset a stream key. Resetting invalidates the compromised credential, so update every encoder configuration that relied on it.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • OBS has no VLC Video source: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. The OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist plays in the wrong order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for list order, then arrange the files in the VLC Video playlist.
  • Playback stops at the last file: Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
  • Playback pauses or stops after a scene switch: Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and the source’s visibility in the active scene.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS has the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and confirm the intended key is active in Live Control Room. If the key might be compromised, reset it and update OBS.
  • The stream is on the wrong watch page or has the wrong privacy: Check the active or scheduled stream and its metadata in Live Control Room. The reusable key is separate from event and watch-page settings.
