Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To loop an MP4 to YouTube Live from Ubuntu, run FFmpeg with -re and -stream_loop -1, then send the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The command below is a starting point, not a universal preset: inspect your file, choose settings YouTube accepts, and confirm your server can sustain the upload.
Before you start
- An Ubuntu server that can stay online, with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate.
- An MP4 you have the rights to rebroadcast, including its audio.
- FFmpeg installed and able to read the file. Re-encoding with
libx264also requires an FFmpeg build that includes that encoder. - A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
You can use a physical Ubuntu server or a rented VPS. No particular provider or plan is required by this workflow; make sure the host’s connection and availability suit a continuous stream.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Use the exact server URL provided for your stream rather than assuming a fixed ingest endpoint.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, shared log, or article. YouTube’s setup and live-stream guidance is in YouTube Help.
Inspect the MP4 and choose a sending method
Before starting a continuous process, check whether the file has video and audio streams, and note their codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio format. The choice is between copying compatible encoded streams and re-encoding them:

- Stream copy: avoids decoding and encoding, uses less CPU, and does not introduce another generation of encoding loss. It is only suitable when the input streams and output container requirements are compatible. FFmpeg explains stream copy and its limitations in its documentation.
- Re-encoding: lets you select output codecs and bitrate to fit YouTube’s ingest guidance, but uses CPU and requires a suitable encoder in your FFmpeg build.
The example below re-encodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC. Confirm that the input contains an audio stream; if it does not, remove the audio options and adjust the command accordingly rather than assuming every MP4 has audio.
Start an infinite MP4 loop with FFmpeg
Replace the input path and the RTMPS URL locally. Put the stream key into the URL only on the server, and keep the resulting command and logs private.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 \
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k \
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 \
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 \
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-stream_loop -1 is an input option that asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; FFmpeg documents that loop value as infinite. -re makes FFmpeg read the file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Both options belong before -i. See the FFmpeg documentation.

This command is illustrative, not a tested universal recipe. Its 4,500 Kbps video target is not appropriate for every resolution or frame rate. The 60-frame GOP settings correspond to a two-second interval only at 30 fps; set the keyframe interval based on the actual output frame rate. If your input is already compatible, stream copy may be an option, but check the codec/container compatibility before removing the encoder settings.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For audio, it recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before choosing values.
| H.264 example | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality or proof that your server can sustain the rate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a bitrate the connection can maintain. Leave capacity for normal network variation; if the stream is unstable, reduce the target bitrate or resolution and test again.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to its servers. HLS is a separate delivery path intended for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; it uses an HTTPS URL and separate segment and playlist requirements, and YouTube notes its higher latency. It is not a drop-in URL replacement for the RTMP/RTMPS command above. See the separate YouTube HLS guidance.
Verify the stream in YouTube Studio
- Run FFmpeg and check its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the video is moving and that audio is present and at a reasonable level.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the server’s CPU and network use. Test before relying on the stream for a long session.
- When ready, use the Live Control Room’s controls to start the broadcast as appropriate for the stream setup.
YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance and live-stream setup help.
Keep the Ubuntu stream running after disconnects or reboots
An FFmpeg process runs only while the host and process are running. For a continuous stream, use an always-online host and a process manager such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected process exit. That is an operational safeguard, not a guarantee against network or YouTube-side interruptions.

- Store the key in a protected configuration file or environment, restrict access, and avoid printing it into shared logs.
- Review FFmpeg logs, CPU load when transcoding, host connectivity, and YouTube stream health.
- If the host reboots or loses connectivity, confirm both that the process restarted and that YouTube receives the stream again.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a complete archive for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours; if an archive matters, end and restart within that documented duration and verify the behavior in Studio. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL or key, live streaming not enabled, or connection failure | Copy the current URL and key from the stream settings, confirm the channel is enabled, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error output. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing | The MP4 may have no audio stream, or the audio mapping/encoding does not match its streams | Inspect the file’s streams. Remove audio output options when there is no audio, or configure the audio encoding to match the available stream. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops | Bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity, or the network is intermittent | Run an upload speed test, lower bitrate or resolution, and test again. Monitor the host connection as well as Studio’s health indicators. |
| FFmpeg reports encoder or muxing errors | The installed build lacks the selected encoder, or the input streams are incompatible with the chosen output | Check FFmpeg’s build and input codecs. Install/use a build with the needed encoder or choose a compatible stream-copy/transcoding configuration. |
| The video does not repeat | The loop option may be missing or placed after the input | Put -stream_loop -1 before -i, then restart FFmpeg. |
| The stream stops after a server restart | FFmpeg was started manually and did not relaunch at boot | Configure a process manager such as systemd to start the command at boot and inspect its service logs. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only rebroadcast videos and audio you have permission to use. The technical ability to loop a file does not establish that you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s policies and automated rights checks may affect whether a stream can remain available; assess the rights for the specific file before broadcasting. Also ensure the stream provides a legitimate viewing experience rather than relying on repetition alone to satisfy channel monetization rules.
