Start by checking the exact YouTube ingest URL and protocol, then test DNS, outbound TCP 443, and TLS from the VPS running your encoder. “Connection refused” is only a symptom: it does not identify whether the endpoint, firewall, VPS provider, encoder, or address family is responsible. For YouTube RTMPS, use the current hostname and full path from YouTube Live Control Room; the client connects over TLS on port 443.
What “connection refused” tells you—and what it does not
The error means the encoder could not establish or complete the connection it attempted, but the text alone does not pinpoint the failure. It could occur before the stream reaches YouTube’s RTMP application layer—for example, at DNS resolution, TCP connection, or TLS negotiation—or stem from an incorrect URL or an encoder/key problem.
There is no established failure rate for YouTube RTMP refusals from Indian VPS hosts, and the available sources do not identify a particular Indian provider or an India-wide outage as the cause. Diagnose the connection stage before changing hosts.
Fix it in diagnostic order
1. Record the setup and exact failure
- Note the encoder name and version, VPS operating system and region, timestamp, and exact error text.
- Record whether the target begins with
rtmp://orrtmps://, but do not share the stream key in tickets, screenshots, or public posts. - Run checks from the same VPS and runtime environment as the encoder. A test from your own computer does not establish that the VPS can reach YouTube.
2. Copy the current ingest URL from YouTube
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Copy the current stream URL and confirm the protocol, server hostname, and full path. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; its RTMPS instructions explain how to reveal and use the RTMPS URL.
- If you choose RTMPS, make sure your encoder supports it and uses the complete URL YouTube supplies. Do not substitute a guessed IP address for the hostname: the hostname is needed for TLS authentication and SNI.
RTMP and RTMPS are different protocol settings. Sending unencrypted RTMP to an endpoint configured for RTMPS can fail. Google’s RTMPS documentation specifies TLS and port 443 for the client connection to YouTube’s ingestion server.

3. Check DNS, outbound TCP 443, and TLS
Test the exact configured hostname from the VPS. Confirm that it resolves, and check that outbound TCP 443 is permitted by all applicable layers:
- The VPS operating system’s firewall.
- Any cloud or VPS network firewall.
- The provider’s outbound traffic policy.
Then test TLS using the hostname, not a bare IP, so the client can send SNI. A failed TCP or TLS test is useful evidence for investigating a firewall, provider policy, or route issue. A successful generic HTTPS request is not proof that the YouTube ingest endpoint, full path, encoder’s RTMPS implementation, or route works.

Google Developers states: “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” That is why opening inbound port 1935 on the VPS is not the fix for a client-to-YouTube RTMPS connection.
4. Distinguish network failure from encoder or key failure
If DNS, TCP, and TLS checks succeed but the stream is not accepted, verify the encoder’s selected protocol and update it. For third-party encoder startup errors, YouTube recommends refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder with the new key. Keep the key private. If the stream starts but is unstable, check encoder health and outbound connection quality; YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide advises testing the outbound connection and contacting the internet provider when connectivity problems remain.

5. Test IPv4 only when the setup makes it relevant
PRISM Live Studio’s desktop troubleshooting guidance specifically discusses India and Indonesia. For the issue it documents, PRISM recommends setting IP Family to IPv4 Only, enabling network optimizations, applying the settings, and restarting the app. The vendor attributes that case to certain IPv6 transition policies and ISP infrastructure changes; this is not evidence that IPv6 is generally broken on Indian VPS hosts.
On a VPS, try an IPv4-only test only if the encoder/runtime and VPS actually use IPv6 and let you choose the address family. Compare IPv4 and IPv6 reachability to the same hostname. Do not infer an IPv6 problem from the VPS being in India alone.

6. Escalate with useful, sanitized evidence
- If TCP 443 or TLS fails: Give the VPS provider the timestamp, region, destination hostname, resolved addresses, protocol and port, and sanitized diagnostics. Ask whether outbound RTMPS/TCP 443 or the destination route is filtered.
- If TLS succeeds but the encoder fails: Give the encoder vendor the protocol, endpoint format without the secret key, encoder version, and relevant TLS or network error.
- If connectivity problems persist: YouTube’s guidance suggests checking outbound connectivity and contacting the internet provider. The specific firewall controls and provider commands vary; confirm them with your VPS provider.
When to change VPS providers
Do not move hosts just because the error mentions RTMP. First establish whether the failure is at DNS, TCP connect, TLS handshake, or the RTMP application stage. Compare RTMPS on port 443 with the previously selected protocol and endpoint, check IPv4 against IPv6 where applicable, and ask the provider whether it confirms filtering or a route fault.
If a provider-side restriction or persistent route problem is confirmed, compare prospective hosts on India-region availability, outbound RTMPS policy, IPv4/IPv6 controls, support, and network terms. The available evidence does not support naming or endorsing a specific VPS provider.
