EC2 Spot can cut compute costs, but it can also interrupt a live stream. AWS advertises Spot savings of up to 90% compared with On-Demand, but that is a maximum—not a guaranteed discount for a particular instance or Indian region. AWS can reclaim Spot capacity, usually with two minutes’ notice. On-Demand has a fixed listed rate for the selected configuration and is easier to plan around for a single encoder. For a 24/7 YouTube channel, compare the cost of meeting your reliability target, including failover, rather than comparing hourly rates alone.

Which EC2 pricing option fits a 24/7 YouTube stream?

Choose On-Demand as the simpler baseline if one encoder must stay available and an interruption would be unacceptable. Consider Spot when your design can recover from an interruption—for example, by moving the workload to another capacity pool—and the resulting viewer impact is acceptable. Neither pricing model, on its own, guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast: On-Demand avoids Spot reclamation, but does not prevent application, host, network or YouTube ingest failures.

AWS says Spot is spare EC2 capacity and advises using it for flexible, fault-tolerant workloads. Its Spot best-practices guidance says savings can be up to 90% versus On-Demand; the actual price depends on the instance type and capacity pool. AWS also warns that past availability does not guarantee future availability. AWS EC2 Spot best practices.

Spot and On-Demand compared

Decision point Spot On-Demand
Compute rate Varies by instance type and Spot capacity pool; AWS advertises savings of up to 90% versus On-Demand, not a guaranteed discount for a particular India configuration. Fixed listed rate for the selected configuration, without a long-term commitment.
Capacity continuity AWS can reclaim the instance; its guidance describes a two-minute interruption notice. Capacity varies with supply and demand. Not reclaimed to meet Spot capacity needs. Other causes of interruption still apply.
Workload fit Flexible, restartable, fault-tolerant or redundantly served workloads. Workloads that cannot be interrupted or need a simpler, predictable compute rate.
Implication for one encoder Budget and design for replacement capacity, recovery and viewer impact. A straightforward compute baseline, but not a complete availability plan.
India price estimate Requires the exact Region, Availability Zone, instance type and current Spot pool price. Requires the exact Region, instance type and current listed rate.

AWS recommends On-Demand for applications that cannot be interrupted. AWS: Purchasing On-Demand Instances for Amazon EC2.

How to estimate the monthly cost in India

“India” is not enough information to produce a reliable monthly EC2 bill. A defensible estimate needs a named AWS Region and Availability Zone, instance type and size, operating system, runtime and pricing date. Spot rates vary by Region, instance type and capacity pool; check the current rate for the configuration you intend to use. AWS EC2 Spot pricing.

Start with compute

  1. Choose the AWS Region and Availability Zone where you plan to run the encoder.
  2. Select an instance type and size that can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. The bitrate sent to YouTube is a workload setting, not an EC2 price.
  3. Check the current hourly price for that exact configuration: the listed On-Demand rate or the Spot price for the relevant capacity pool. Record the date you checked it.
  4. Multiply the hourly rate by 24 hours and by the number of days in your billing period. This gives a first-pass compute estimate, not a complete bill.

Add costs beyond the instance rate

Budget separately for storage volumes and snapshots, network data transfer, IP addresses if applicable, monitoring, taxes and any standby or replacement capacity. These costs depend on your architecture and usage; there is no single total without those inputs.

For a fair reliability comparison, price at least two designs: one On-Demand encoder, and a Spot-based design that can recover from interruption. Include replacement or standby capacity and the operational cost of failover in the Spot scenario. A lower Spot hourly rate is not the same service level as a continuously available encoder.

What a Spot interruption means for a live stream

AWS documents a two-minute notice before reclaiming a Spot instance. It also documents a rebalance recommendation that can signal elevated interruption risk earlier, but neither signal guarantees time to manually rebuild an encoder. Automation should be able to respond, and any state that matters should be preserved where appropriate. AWS: Spot Instance interruption notices.

AWS advises flexibility across instance types and Availability Zones and recommends fault-tolerant design. For a stream, that means planning how another encoder takes over, how YouTube ingest is handled during the switch, and what viewers may see while recovery occurs. Test the failover path rather than assuming that a replacement instance will start in time or that a stream will resume without impact.

AWS published a media case study describing a containerized live-streaming architecture using EC2 Spot. It shows Spot can be one component in an interruption-tolerant design; it does not establish that a lone Spot encoder is suitable for every always-on YouTube channel. AWS media case study.

Size the encoder for YouTube—not by price alone

The EC2 instance must handle the encoder workload, while the outgoing connection must sustain the selected ingest bitrate. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not EC2 instance specifications or estimates of bandwidth delivered to viewers. Select quality that your available upload bitrate can support, test before going live, and monitor stream health. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube’s setup uses a server URL and stream key with encoder software or standalone hardware. The documentation does not make a particular physical encoder necessary for an EC2 pricing comparison. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Keep EC2 compute separate from video delivery charges

An EC2 instance running an encoder and a managed streaming service are different cost categories. Amazon IVS publishes delivery charges by quality tier for its managed video service; those figures are not an EC2 fee for sending an encoder stream to YouTube. Do not add IVS delivery pricing to an EC2-to-YouTube estimate unless you are separately choosing to use IVS. Amazon IVS pricing.

Common planning mistakes

  • Treating “up to 90%” as your India discount. It is AWS’s advertised maximum, not a guaranteed rate for your selected instance or region. Check the live price for the exact pool.
  • Comparing compute rates while ignoring recovery. A Spot design intended to meet an availability target may need standby capacity, automation and failover testing.
  • Assuming On-Demand means uninterrupted. It avoids Spot reclamation, but encoder software, infrastructure, networking and YouTube ingest can still fail.
  • Using bitrate as a proxy for instance price. YouTube’s recommended ingest settings help define stream workload and upload requirements; they do not determine EC2 pricing by themselves.
  • Mixing unrelated delivery charges into the estimate. Keep EC2 compute, storage, network transfer and any separately selected managed video service distinct.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating your own EC2 encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is always on from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
