To send HLS video from an Amazon EC2 instance to YouTube Live, run an encoder on EC2 that packages and delivers a YouTube-compatible HLS ingest stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, select HLS for the stream key, then give the encoder the HTTPS stream URL YouTube generates. You cannot simply paste an HLS playlist URL into YouTube and expect YouTube to relay it.

The exact encoder configuration depends on your source files and tooling. YouTube specifies the required ingest behavior, but there is no single verified FFmpeg command or EC2 instance size that suits every input.

What you need before starting

  • An EC2 instance with an encoder that can read your source and produce YouTube-compatible HLS output.
  • A source file or playlist whose codecs and playback behavior you have checked. A .m3u8 file alone does not establish that its contents can be forwarded unchanged.
  • A YouTube channel and access to YouTube Live Control Room to create or select a stream key.
  • Enough network capacity and compute resources for your chosen input and output. The right EC2 size depends on the workload; YouTube and AWS do not prescribe one size for this workflow.

YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance requires MPEG-2 TS segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS delivery using POST or PUT. The stream key is embedded in the generated HTTPS stream URL, so treat that URL as a credential and do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, or source code. See YouTube’s HLS ingest setup guidance.

Configure YouTube Live for HLS

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Open the stream settings and select or create a stream key. Set its protocol to HLS.
  3. Copy the HTTPS stream URL shown for that key into your encoder’s destination configuration. If you plan to use a backup destination, copy the optional backup URL as well.
  4. Keep the stream URL private. If it is exposed, replace or rotate the key in YouTube before using the stream again.

The exact labels and placement in Live Control Room can change. Confirm that the selected key is configured for HLS before starting the encoder; an RTMP/RTMPS destination is not interchangeable with the HLS URL.

Prepare the EC2 encoder and HLS output

Check the source first

Identify the source container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, and whether the source is a single file or a playlist. Confirm that your encoder can decode or pass through those streams and produce the required output. A source HLS playlist may reference separate segments, nested playlists, or codecs and timing that do not match YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Match YouTube’s HLS requirements

  • Segments: use MPEG-2 TS segments with durations between 1 and 4 seconds.
  • Playlist: maintain a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Do not use byte-range segments.
  • Delivery: send the HLS output to YouTube’s HTTPS endpoint using POST or PUT.
  • Encryption: HTTPS is supported for transport; additional encryption of the HLS media is not supported by YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

These requirements describe the stream your encoder must send, not a promise that every HLS source can be forwarded as-is. Configure segment generation, playlist updates, and HTTP delivery in the encoder you choose, then verify the resulting behavior against YouTube’s documentation.

Choose compatible media settings

YouTube’s HLS guidance lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. Its general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the output to the capabilities of your source and encoder rather than assuming that an unsupported input can be passed through. YouTube’s current guidance is in recommended live encoder settings and its HLS setup instructions.

Do not assume a universal command or instance size

The encoder command depends on whether your input is a file, a playlist, or another stream; its codecs and timestamps; and the encoder’s HLS and HTTPS ingest support. The official setup guidance does not establish one FFmpeg command that works for all such cases, nor does it identify an EC2 instance family or size for arbitrary inputs. Select tooling that can meet the requirements above, and validate its output with your actual source before relying on it.

Start the stream and verify it

  1. Run the encoder on EC2 with the source, output format, and YouTube HTTPS HLS URL configured. Keep the URL out of shared terminal histories and public logs where possible.
  2. Check that the encoder is reading the intended file or playlist, generating TS segments of 1–4 seconds, updating a rolling playlist, and delivering segments successfully over HTTPS.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and review stream health and any messages before going live to viewers.
  4. Test with content that has similar motion and audio to the planned stream. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with the real material.
  5. Once the ingest is healthy, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the workflow requires a separate start action, and continue monitoring both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health.

HLS versus RTMP/RTMPS

HLS can be appropriate when you need YouTube’s HLS ingest path or its supported codecs and HDR workflow. It is not the lowest-latency option: HLS sends video segments, while RTMP is a continuous stream, so HLS has higher latency. YouTube turns off its ultra-low-latency option when HLS is selected. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance, so choose HLS when its specific capabilities or workflow matter more than minimizing delay.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming stream The encoder is using an RTMP destination, a stale URL, or a URL/key that does not match the selected HLS stream key. Re-copy the HTTPS URL from the HLS-configured key in Live Control Room. Verify that the encoder is sending to that endpoint, not to a playlist URL for the source.
Segments are rejected or the stream is unstable Segment duration, container, playlist behavior, or HTTP method does not meet the HLS ingest requirements. Inspect encoder output: TS segments should last 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist should have no more than five outstanding segments, byte ranges should not be used, and delivery should use HTTPS POST or PUT.
Video arrives but audio or video fails validation The output codec or stream parameters may not match YouTube’s documented capabilities, or the source may be malformed. Check the actual encoded output, not only the source extension. Use a listed video codec and audio codec, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Delay is greater than expected HLS segment delivery adds latency, and YouTube disables ultra-low latency for HLS. If low delay is more important than the HLS workflow, consider YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest instead.
The encoder works with a short test but fails during the full stream The test may not reflect the source’s motion, audio, duration, playlist changes, or EC2 resource demand. Test with representative material and monitor encoder resource use, delivery errors, and YouTube stream health during the broadcast.

EC2 or a managed AWS media service?

Amazon EC2 gives you a cloud host on which to operate your chosen encoder, so you manage the process and its configuration. AWS MediaLive is a separate managed media service; AWS documents HLS and RTMP/RTMPS output capabilities, but that does not establish a ready-made EC2 recipe or a cost and operations comparison for this particular source-to-YouTube workflow. Choose based on the processing workflow you need and the operational responsibility you are prepared to manage.
