Once you are signed in and the article is open, use your phone’s built-in screenshot controls: on most Android phones press Power and Volume Down together; on an iPhone, the buttons depend on whether it has Face ID or Touch ID. Some magazine apps block screenshots. If that happens, use an approved saving or reading option or ask the publisher for help rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Take a screenshot on Android
- Sign in to the magazine’s official app or website and open the article.
- Press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time. On some phones, you can instead press and hold Power, then tap Screenshot.
- Tap the screenshot preview to crop or edit it, then save it using your phone’s available controls.
Button controls can vary by phone maker; check the manufacturer’s support instructions if these steps do not match your device. Google says scrolling screenshots are available on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling, but this does not guarantee the feature will work in every magazine app. Google’s Android screenshot instructions explain the system controls and scrolling capture.
Take a screenshot on iPhone
- Sign in to the magazine’s official app or website and open the article.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up together. On an iPhone with Touch ID, quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
- Tap the preview to crop, annotate, save, or share the screenshot. Screenshots are saved to Photos by default.
For a long webpage in Safari, Apple documents a Full Page option after taking a screenshot; supported pages can be saved as an image or PDF. That option is for supported content such as Safari webpages, not a guarantee for every magazine app or protected view. See Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions.
If the magazine app blocks screenshots
A warning that screenshots are disabled, or a blank capture, can mean the app is protecting its content. Android’s FLAG_SECURE display flag is intended to prevent protected UI from appearing in screenshots or on non-secure displays. Google Play policy requires apps to respect this flag and not facilitate workarounds. Google Play’s policy describes the restriction.

- Check the magazine’s app or website for an approved download, save, print, or offline-reading feature.
- Contact the publisher’s support team to ask what personal note-taking or saving options it permits.
- Do not use tools or techniques intended to defeat a screenshot block.
Long articles: scrolling capture and full-page screenshots
On Android 12 and later, scrolling capture works on most scrollable screens, according to Google, but availability depends on the screen and app. On iPhone, Apple’s Full Page option applies to supported content such as a Safari webpage. Neither method is guaranteed to work inside a third-party magazine app or a protected reader.
Taking a screenshot is not the same as permission to share
Being able to read an article after logging in does not by itself mean you may distribute its screenshot. Publisher terms differ. For example, The Indian Express says printouts or downloads of copyrighted content for non-personal or non-commercial use require written permission, subject to its terms and notices. Journal Press India describes personal screenshots on its website subject to conditions, including keeping notices intact, and restricts copying or redistribution without authorization. Vogue India’s terms identify digital-magazine content as belonging to Conde Nast India or third-party licensors. These are examples, not rules for every magazine: check the terms for the publication you subscribe to.

The button combination does nothing
Check that you are pressing the buttons for your phone type together, and quickly release them where the device instructions call for it. Android button behavior can vary by manufacturer; consult its support page if needed.

The screenshot is blank or capture is disabled
The magazine app may protect its content. Use an approved reader or download feature, or contact the publisher. Do not try to bypass the protection.
Scrolling capture or Full Page is missing
Android scrolling capture is limited to Android 12 and later and to most—not all—scrollable screens. Apple’s Full Page option is for supported content such as Safari webpages. If the reader app does not offer the feature, check for a publisher-approved alternative.
