If you mean a continuous sequence of videos being sent as a YouTube Live stream, the stream depends on the encoder computer, its internet connection, and the encoder’s ability to reconnect. A UPS can bridge a brief outage; after a longer outage, you need a tested restart and recovery setup. If you mean a playlist on YouTube’s watch page, looping only repeats playback for viewers.
First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from a live stream
YouTube’s playlist loop is a viewer-side playback feature: it repeats videos in a playlist on the watch page. It does not send video to YouTube Live or restart an interrupted broadcast. YouTube’s playlist-loop instructions describe playback controls, not live-stream recovery.
A live stream made from prerecorded videos instead uses an encoder to send video to YouTube through a stream URL and stream key. If the encoder loses power, the outgoing feed stops. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control parts of the broadcast workflow, but they cannot restore power to a computer or ensure an encoder application launches and resumes after a reboot. Prevent a brief power cut with a UPS
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can temporarily power your streaming computer and the network equipment it needs during a local outage. It is useful only while its battery lasts and only if the internet connection remains available.

- List the equipment the stream needs. Include the encoder computer and the modem, router, or other network equipment required for its connection.
- Size the UPS for the combined load and target runtime. Check the devices’ actual power draw and the UPS specifications. Do not assume a particular runtime from the UPS’s advertised capacity alone.
- Connect and test the whole chain. Confirm that the UPS powers every required device and that the live feed remains healthy during a simulated power loss.
- Plan for the battery running out. A UPS bridges a short interruption; it does not provide indefinite power or protect against an independent internet failure.
Recover after power returns
If the outage lasts long enough to shut down the computer, recovery depends on the operating system, the encoder, and the YouTube stream’s configuration. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not automate the computer’s boot process or guarantee that an encoder relaunches with its previous settings. YouTube recommends testing encoders and monitoring stream health in its live streaming tips.
- Set up the broadcast in advance. Confirm the stream URL and key in the encoder and keep the key secure. Choose the YouTube auto-start and auto-stop settings that suit your workflow; YouTube explains what those settings control in Manage live stream settings.
- Check what happens when the computer starts. Configure your computer and encoder as appropriate for your setup, then verify whether the encoder opens and loads the intended stream after a reboot. Exact startup steps vary by operating system and encoder, so do not assume a universal restart procedure.
- Test the full outage-and-recovery sequence. Simulate the kind of shutdown you need to recover from. Confirm that the computer starts, the encoder reconnects or restarts as intended, and YouTube receives a healthy stream.
- Verify the viewer-facing result. Check the stream’s health and the public watch page after recovery. A running encoder application alone does not prove that viewers can see a live feed.
Consider a separate failover encoder
A backup encoder or internet route can reduce reliance on one device or connection, but it requires a separate, validated failover design. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover: for example, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and check that the player switches to the backup encoder. That test is about encoder failover, not a guarantee that a backup arrangement will recover from every power or network failure.

Keep a recording as a fallback
A recording can preserve material if a broadcast is interrupted, but it cannot keep the broadcast live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also recommends a local backup: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” See Archive live streams and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up and verify local recording in your encoder if losing the recording would matter. Treat YouTube’s archive as a convenience, not your only copy of important footage.

What viewer controls do—and do not do
- Playlist looping repeats playlist playback on a viewer’s device; it does not restore a failed live feed.
- DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream where available. It is not creator-side power-failure recovery. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams.
Troubleshooting after an outage
