Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an FFmpeg process that must run continuously on a virtual machine, Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean Droplets are documented EC2 alternatives. They are self-managed VM options, so you install and operate FFmpeg yourself. If your priority is simply keeping an uploaded-video playlist live on YouTube without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-managed option—not a VM substitute.
Choose the kind of service you actually need
“An EC2 alternative” can mean either another virtual machine on which you run FFmpeg or a service that takes over part of the streaming pipeline. Those are different architectures: a VM gives you a machine to manage; a managed streaming service may accept an already encoded feed or transcode and deliver media without giving you a general-purpose server.
- Choose a self-managed VM if you need to run a persistent FFmpeg process, control its configuration, and manage updates, restarts, monitoring, and YouTube delivery.
- Consider a managed media service if you need a defined ingest-to-output pipeline, such as transcoding and HLS/DASH output, rather than a general VM. Confirm that its input and output model fits the exact YouTube workflow you intend to use.
- Choose a purpose-built YouTube playlist service if the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without operating an encoder machine. StreamNeo fits this use case, but it is not a place to run your own FFmpeg process.
Best options for keeping a YouTube playlist live
1. StreamNeo: simplest for an uploaded-video YouTube loop
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from videos you upload or arrange into a playlist. Upload the recording or build the playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a general-purpose VM or a camera encoder.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded media streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; billing options are a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

2. Google Compute Engine: a general-purpose VM alternative
Google Compute Engine is a self-managed infrastructure-as-a-service VM option, with Linux and Windows machines. That makes it a direct category alternative to EC2 when your requirement is a server on which to install and run FFmpeg. You remain responsible for the encoder process and its configuration. Google’s product overview is at Compute Engine.

3. DigitalOcean Droplets: Linux VMs, with a streaming-oriented image to investigate
DigitalOcean documents Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines. Its Marketplace also lists an SRS image built with SRS and FFmpeg, describing restreaming and virtual live-streaming features. The listing was generated on 13 March 2024 and specifies FFmpeg 4.2; that is a dated catalog detail, not confirmation of the current image contents or a current FFmpeg release. Check the image’s present maintenance state and included software before relying on it. See DigitalOcean Compute and the SRS Marketplace listing.
4. Google Cloud Live Stream API: managed processing, not a VM
Google Cloud Live Stream API is not a drop-in VM replacement. Its documented model accepts SRT or RTMP input, transcodes the stream to HLS or DASH, and saves output in Cloud Storage. Google defines an encoder as a program used to send input streams and names FFmpeg as an example. That describes FFmpeg as a possible upstream encoder; it does not mean the API provides a general-purpose machine for running your playlist process. Review the Live Stream API overview and verify that its documented input/output pipeline fits your planned YouTube delivery.

Comparison: what each option does
| Option | Category | What runs or is handled | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Managed YouTube playlist service | Loops uploaded videos from the cloud; you do not operate an FFmpeg VM. | It serves the uploaded-video YouTube use case, not arbitrary FFmpeg jobs or camera streaming. |
| Google Compute Engine | Self-managed VM | You provision a VM and run your own FFmpeg process. | Choose a suitable configuration and region, then account for runtime, storage, and outgoing data. |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | Self-managed Linux VM | You provision a Droplet and run your own FFmpeg process; a streaming-oriented Marketplace image is listed. | Confirm current image contents and maintenance; the listing’s FFmpeg 4.2 detail is from a catalog generated 13 March 2024. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Managed streaming/transcoding service | Accepts documented SRT or RTMP input, transcodes to HLS or DASH, and stores output in Cloud Storage. | Confirm its managed input/output workflow works for the intended YouTube destination; it is not a VM. |
How to run your own playlist-to-YouTube encoder on a VM
The VM choice does not remove the need to configure an encoder and deliver a valid live feed to YouTube. The steps below are the operational outline; the exact FFmpeg command depends on the playlist format, codecs, source files, and YouTube ingest method. Do not copy settings intended for another destination as if they were YouTube requirements.
- Provision a VM. Select a Linux VM in your chosen provider, then connect using that provider’s documented access method. The cited provider pages establish VM availability, but do not establish the best machine size for a particular playlist workload.
- Install and validate FFmpeg. Use the operating system’s supported package or a maintained FFmpeg distribution. Confirm the installed version and that the required input demuxers and output encoders are available before building a long-running job.
- Prepare the playlist and media. Make sure the playlist references files accessible to the VM and that FFmpeg can read them in sequence. Test a short segment first; a process that cannot read a missing or incompatible file cannot sustain the intended loop.
- Create the YouTube live destination. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream key. Treat that key as a password: do not place it in a public script, repository, command transcript, or shared log. Configure the FFmpeg output for the ingest method and encoding requirements YouTube currently documents for the stream.
- Start FFmpeg and check the result. Start the process under a service manager or another supervised method so it can be observed and restarted after an ordinary process failure. Check FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Studio’s stream preview/status before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Keep the VM operational. Plan for process supervision, VM restarts, disk capacity, updates, access to the media files, and alerts. A live process on a VM is still your responsibility to monitor and recover.
Do not borrow protocol settings from another destination
YouTube’s delivery requirements are platform-specific. Its published DASH guide covers YouTube live content delivered via DASH: Delivering Live YouTube Content via DASH. Amazon IVS is a separate destination; its FFmpeg setup guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval for that IVS setup, which is not evidence that the same setting is correct for YouTube. See Amazon IVS streaming setup and follow YouTube’s current guidance for a YouTube stream.

Costs and selection trade-offs
The cited provider material does not establish a current, like-for-like cost winner for a continuously running FFmpeg workload. A meaningful VM comparison must use the actual machine configuration, region, runtime, storage needs, and outbound data transfer. Estimate those for the workload and check each provider’s current pricing before choosing; a low hourly compute figure alone would not settle the total cost.
Operational effort is another real difference. A VM gives control over the FFmpeg environment but leaves deployment, process supervision, recovery, and server upkeep to you. The Live Stream API shifts the architecture toward managed transcoding and HLS/DASH outputs, not toward a general-purpose VM. StreamNeo avoids running the playlist encoder yourself, but only for its uploaded-video YouTube workflow.
