If the page is waiting for a one-time password (OTP), the screenshot will show that checkpoint; taking a screenshot does not complete authentication or advance the login. Without the portal name and the script’s timing, the specific reason the checkpoint appeared cannot be determined.
What the screenshot tells you—and what it does not
Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context. It records the page state, not the outcome your script intended to reach. If the browser is still displaying an OTP prompt when the screenshot command runs, that is what the image records. Selenium’s screenshot documentation describes capturing the current window; the operation is not a login step.
An OTP prompt means the browser has reached an authentication checkpoint that has not yet been completed in the visible flow. It does not, on its own, reveal why this portal presented the checkpoint. The portal, account, session conditions, and exact script sequence are unspecified, so attributing the prompt to a particular policy or automation issue would be speculation.
Check the order and timing of the login steps
First inspect the run sequence: did the script submit the login form, then take the screenshot before the OTP step was completed? This is a troubleshooting inference to check, not a confirmed cause for an unspecified run.

- Submit the preceding login form using the portal’s authorized flow.
- Determine what the portal expects next. If it requires an OTP, complete that step through an authorized user or test process.
- Before capturing a success screenshot, wait for a condition that establishes the intended state—for example, a page element that is only present after successful authentication.
- If the OTP prompt remains, capture it as the actual state and inspect the page text and authorized test logs rather than treating the image as proof that login succeeded.
A fixed delay alone does not establish that authentication has finished: the browser may still be waiting at the OTP checkpoint after the delay. Prefer a condition tied to the expected page state.
Handle two-factor authentication through an authorized test setup
The Selenium project says that “Automating this seamlessly and consistently is a big challenge in Selenium” and advises against routine 2FA automation. Its suggested approaches are for systems and test environments your team controls; they are not permission to bypass another organization’s authentication. - If OTP itself is in scope: use the portal’s authorized factor and test procedure, and verify the authenticated state before taking the success screenshot.
- If OTP is not in scope and your team controls the system: ask the team for a dedicated test token, use designated test users, or configure 2FA for the test environment as Selenium describes.
- If considering an IP exception: Selenium also lists exemptions for known test IPs. Treat this as a controlled security change, not a general workaround.
- If the portal belongs to a third party: follow its approved login process. Do not try to skip or bypass its OTP or CAPTCHA.
Selenium 4’s browser-protocol authentication support, discussed in its authentication material, concerns basic- or digest-style authentication; it does not establish a way to skip an OTP page. See Selenium’s authentication discussion.
Do not assume every Indian portal uses the same OTP rules
OTP length, expiry, attempt limits, and resend behavior depend on the service and flow. For example, the Income Tax Department of India describes a six-digit OTP with a 15-minute validity period, three attempts, and a resend action for a particular notice-authentication procedure. Those details apply to that procedure only, not to Indian portals generally. See the Income Tax Department’s instructions.

To diagnose a particular run, you would need the portal name or URL, the authorized login steps, when the screenshot command runs, and the observed page text or authorized test logs. Without those details, the supported conclusion is narrower: Selenium captured the OTP state displayed in the browser at capture time.
