To send a MediaLive channel to YouTube over encrypted RTMPS, create or select a YouTube live stream, copy its RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then configure a MediaLive RTMP output group with those destination details. Start the MediaLive channel and confirm that YouTube receives the preview; for a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room.
What you need before configuring MediaLive
- An AWS Elemental MediaLive channel that you can create or edit.
- A YouTube live stream, either scheduled or newly created, and access to its settings in YouTube Studio.
- The RTMPS URL and stream key belonging to that specific YouTube stream. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with it may be able to send video to the stream.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection, which encrypts the connection. Its default Stream URL display may show ordinary RTMP, so reveal and copy the secure URL rather than assuming the displayed address is RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
1. Get the YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- In Stream settings, click the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS URL.
- Copy the complete RTMPS URL and the stream key for that same stream. Keep the key private; do not substitute a generic RTMP URL or a key from a different stream.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both a server URL and a stream key. The exact endpoint and key are specific to the stream shown in your account; there is no universal endpoint to hard-code. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
2. Configure the MediaLive RTMP output group
- In AWS Elemental MediaLive, create or edit the channel that will send the video to YouTube.
- Add an RTMP output group. MediaLive’s output group has one output by default; configure its destination and the video, audio, and caption stream settings needed by your production.
- In the output’s destination settings, enter the components from the YouTube RTMPS URL in the corresponding URL fields, such as protocol, host/address, port, and application. Use the values YouTube supplied for the selected stream.
- Enter the YouTube stream key in MediaLive’s stream-name field. MediaLive can represent the destination using separate application and stream-name components or a complete path; map the supplied URL and key to the fields accordingly.
- Set the destination count for the MediaLive channel class: a single-pipeline channel needs one destination; a standard channel needs two. Inspect the current destination values for your YouTube stream rather than assuming YouTube supplies two different endpoints.
- For secure RTMPS, set the authentication scheme and certificate mode as required by the downstream connection; AWS documents an authentication-scheme field (typically Common) and a certificate-mode field.
Do not reuse an AWS example URL as a YouTube endpoint. The AWS guide illustrates how destination fields are structured; only the URL and key shown for your YouTube stream are appropriate for your configuration. Consult the AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide for the RTMP output-group fields and channel-class destination requirements.

3. Start the channel and confirm YouTube receives it
- Save the MediaLive channel configuration and start the channel.
- Open the matching stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for its video preview to appear.
- For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview arrives. For an immediate stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow says that starting the encoder creates the watch page and puts the stream live.
Starting MediaLive sends the feed; it does not replace the separate Go live action required for a scheduled broadcast. For more on YouTube’s flow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot connection problems
SSL or certificate error
- Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; the ordinary RTMP URL may be displayed by default.
- Confirm the protocol is
rtmpsand the configured server and port match the current stream details. - If the URL otherwise looks correct but the SSL error persists, YouTube suggests trying port 443. Use the actual stream URL, not an illustrative hostname.
Connection timeout
- Check the complete URL and port for transcription errors.
- Confirm the sending configuration supports RTMPS; an RTMP-only destination will not establish an RTMPS connection.
YouTube shows no incoming stream or rejects it
- Verify the stream key belongs to the selected YouTube stream and is in MediaLive’s stream-name field.
- If a channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room, update MediaLive with the new key. YouTube treats the key as the stream’s password and address. See Manage live stream settings.
- Confirm that you are checking the same stream whose URL and key you copied.
MediaLive reports a destination-count mismatch
Check the channel class. Configure one destination for a single-pipeline channel and two for a standard channel. Do not assume the two entries must be different YouTube endpoints; use the current values supplied for the selected stream and the MediaLive configuration applicable to your channel.
